There is nothing wrong with 'stat check' champions...
First of all, almost nobody actually 'stat checks' an enemy when they engage on them. But let me go further.
Some people enjoy crunching numbers, estimating the capabilities of their champion abilities, runes, masteries and items over what the enemy has.
Some people enjoy the macro game over the micro game.
Some people enjoy winning through superior strategy, build, map awareness.
People like Singed420, Trick2G, Hai just to name a couple, like to win their games through outplaying the entire enemy team through superior tactics. While they do have good mechanics on the champions they play, that merely acts as a vessel for them to express their strategy, shot calling, map awareness and objective control.
While some champions could use some work towards interactivity. There is NO problem with a champion being focused on meta play. Not everyone wants to be Boxbox or Gosu, some of us want to be Trick2G. Just like in an RTS, not everyone wants to micro marines perfectly. Some people want to macro their base expansions, resource income and general map awareness for victory.
This is important to note. Because honestly, if every champion was as skill based, feast or famine, unreliable, mechanical outplay champions like Riven, Azir, Vayne, Yasuo, Zed and the like. Me and many other people would just quit. Some of us like reliable control champions, strategically powerful champions, or mechanically simple but strategically complex champions.
Just a concern I had to post, after so many comments about "X is just a stat check champion."

because she manages to be both high outplay and low counterplay at the same time, which is an inherently toxic combination. Why on earth a champion with as many outplay mechanics as Irelia has such a highly targeted kit is beyond me.
