Clearing Up Misinformation About Yorick:

I've noticed a lot of misinformation about Yorick, which is understandable since he's hovered around 1% pick rate for years. Since most of you probably haven't even seen a Yorick in your last 200 games, I will help clear up some things about him.

False: Yorick was abandoned by riot and left disabled from free champion rotation because his kit is inherently broken.

True: Yorick's neglect is a combination of many factors. His original creator, Coronach, was hired by another game studio not long after Yorick's release. Almost every new release is a balance mess. Imagine if Xin Zhao's creator had left Riot, abandoning him in practically release state until Riot was forced to pseudo-delete him because no other developer was willing to quickly adopt the responsibility for maintaining post-release balancing/fixing. He also suffered from multiple bugs that the Riot staff struggled to resolve, such as the infinite deaths ult bug that resurfaced multiple times after being "fixed". On the whole, Yorick's kit is in the same style as other juggernauts. He is actually very similar to Darius, low ability range, low mobility, low cc, built-in sustain (decimate equivalent to omen of famine), stickiness requires melee range (crippling strike equivalent to omen of war), similar damage trading pattern (hemorrhage bleed equivalent to ghoul aggro). The main difference between them is that Darius has a powerful execute ult while Yorick has a unique and interesting utility ultimate. Yorick's ultimate shifts some of his power budget into supporting his team, which is a unique trait among juggernauts.

False: Yorick is a ghoul spamming earlygame bully that becomes useless after laning.

True: Yorick is actually usually quite mediocre during early laning and has a very limited mana pool prohibiting him from spamming abilities. Most scenarios force him to invest heavily in mana rather than combat stats early on. Also, his winrate by game duration curve actually shows him as a somewhat lategame champion, peaking around 40 minutes, which is due to his ult utility scaling with his team's carry champs. The only time that he was a major lane bully was during a short period after his release when he was buffed to overtuned levels (and his W used to scale with AD), but then was subsequently nerfed.

False: Yorick walks into a bar... There are no counters.

True: Yorick is actually statistically countered by many champions, particularly true earlygame bullies like Pantheon and Renekton. His lack of mobility or strong cc also makes him vulnerable to being countered by strong ganking junglers.

False: Yorick has no counterplay, is anti-fun, toxic, buzz word, buzz word, etc. etc. etc.

True: As I cleared up previously, Yorick is not a major lane bully and actually has a similar laning/trading pattern to other juggernauts. All of the most common complaints about Yorick's style can be argued against most other juggernauts, especially Darius. However, Yorick's ghouls can be killed/avoided unlike Darius's hemorrhage, which is its closest comparison. Secondly, Yorick's early mana dependence allows his opponent to become established in the lane before Yorick ramps up. Thirdly, Yorick is less snowbally than Darius or even Garen due to his lack of an execute and poor natural sticking power causing him to have low kill potential in lane (he only has 4.5 average kills per game). Also, Yorick's poking in lane can be quite easily counterbuilt by building any amount of sustain (Nasus even gets enough free sustain from his passive).

False: Yorick is a dumpstered, worthless, troll pick champion.

True: Yorick actually has a very high winrate among experienced Yorick players and is even rarely played professionally. Yorick's ult makes him fit wonderfully on teams with vulnerable hypercarries like Cassiopeia or Kog'Maw. He can provide a beefy front line to protect the carry and his ult can provide them a temporary revive in teamfights. Yorick is actually extremely flexible and can even fill a split-pusher role if he builds more heavily in damage than tanky stats since he can ult himself to use his revenant to help take down turrets. He can fill top, jungle, and less commonly support.

With the upcoming Yorick rework, I am concerned that the common misconceptions about Yorick may result in ignorant/inaccurate feedback negatively molding the route that he is pushed in. In my honest opinion, Yorick should receive a rework of similar scope to the Darius, Gangplank, Shen reworks. He is underplayed, but he does not need or deserve a complete overhaul. In particular, Yorick's ultimate is very unique and interesting. It creates a unique role for Yorick in the juggernaut class as a champion who can transition into a more supportive role for his team and can be played more flexibly than the other juggernauts. It would be a horrible shame for that aspect of Yorick to be destroyed.

Don't forget the whole "Yorick offers nothing late game"

Yorick's ult is probably one of the best abilities late game. Copy your adc like jinx. And voila you now have 2 of her raining hell while the ghoul and her is alive (well with 75% of her ad). And if they kill the real jinx she gets a second chance to keep putting out that damage. Of course that makes yorick rather mechanically intensive as well (he has to control the clone and himself. And it even applies all their on hit effects so ones like Kog'maw are just as sound to grab.

Imagine if you could flawlessly do both. You can meatshield for your own adc clone, and put out the adc damage as well. Getting that mechanically sound though is why skilled Yorick players have far better winrates than ones just picking him up.

Yorick snowballs by getting his levels and having his ADC hit their item breakpoints.

Actually a little surprised we haven't seen Yorick + Kog'maw comps in the lcs with how incredibly strong it can be

That's why no one says it. What people DO say is that Yorick becomes a walking cannon minion with an ult.

What is your point? People say all sorts of things out of ignorance. The truth is that Yorick is always useful and has about the same amount of damage and utility as Darius outside of their ults.

Just compare their kits. Yorick's passive, Q, W, E is 100% as good as Darius's.

Darius Hemmorhage - Bleed Damage: Darius's basic attacks and damaging abilities cause enemies to bleed for 10 - 27 (based on level) (+ 30% bonus AD) physical damage over 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times for a maximum of 500% damage over the duration.

Yorick Unholy Covenant - Ghouls: Each of Yorick's basic abilities spawn a ghoul near their target and grant it a unique bonus. Ghouls prioritize enemies hit by Yorick's abilities and enemy champions, dealing 35% of Yorick's AD per autoattack as physical damage with an attack speed of 0.67.

Darius Hemmhorage - Noxian Might: Upon applying full Hemorrhage stacks to an enemy champion or killing them with Noxian Guillotine, Darius gains Noxian Might for 5 seconds. NOXIAN MIGHT: Darius gains 40 - 200 (based on level) bonus attack damage and instantly applies full Hemorrhage stacks through his usual means.

Yorick Unholy Covenant - Self Buff: Yorick deals 5% more damage with his basic attacks and reduces incoming damage by 5% for every ghoul or revenant he has active, stacking up to 4 times for a maximum 20% modifier.

Darius Decimate: Darius hefts his axe for 0.75 seconds, then swings it around himself, dealing PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 (+ 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70% AD) to nearby enemies, doubled against enemies hit by the blade. Darius heals for 12% missing health for each enemy champion hit by Decimate's blade, up to a maximum of 36% missing health.

Yorick Omen of Famine: Yorick deals MAGIC DAMAGE: 55 / 85 / 115 / 145 / 175 (+ 100% Bonus AD) to the target enemy and heals himself for 40% of the damage done. SELF HEAL: 22 / 34 / 46 / 58 / 70 (+ 40% Bonus AD) Omen of Famine summons a ravenous ghoul that heals Yorick for 17.5% AD on each of its basic attacks, doubled to 35% AD against enemy champions.

Darius Crippling Strike: Darius's next basic attack within 4 seconds has 200 range and deals 40% AD bonus physical damage and slows his target by 90% for 1 second. If Crippling Strike kills its target it refunds 30 mana and half of its cooldown. Crippling Strike resets Darius's autoattack timer.

Yorick Omen of War: Yorick's next basic attack within 10 seconds has 175 range and deals bonus physical damage: 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+ 20% AD). Omen of War resets Yorick's autoattack timer. Omen of War summons a spectral ghoul with 8 / 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 AD and 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35% movement speed. While active, Yorick is ghosted and gains the ghoul's bonus movement speed.

Darius Apprehend: PASSIVE: Darius ignores 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25% of his targets' armor. ACTIVE: After a brief delay, Darius Airborne icon pulls in all enemies in front of him, slowing them by 40% for 1 second, and briefly grants sight of the area around the pull.

Yorick Omen of Pestilence: Yorick deals 60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 200 (+ 100% AP) magic damage in a target area, slowing targets hit by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% for 1.5 seconds. Omen of Pestilence summons a decaying ghoul that continuously applies half of Omen of Pestilence's Slow icon slow to all enemies around it.

I've also found Yorick to be a deceptively strong duelist lategame. It's why I feel he can make a pretty good splitpusher. People take Yorick for granted quite a bit, until they suddenly have three ghouls and a Yorick ghost slapping them in the face repeatedly. Having all four up grants him so much tankiness and considerable sustained damage. Even more so if you've got your mechanics down. With an iceborn gauntlet and his Q, chasing can become much less of a pain too.

Is yorick actually never in the free rotation? I feel like I've seen him there before but maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

Yorick has been missing in rotation since at least S4 if not before then. I took a break from playing for awhile but yeah he has been gone for more than ages.
