Is mid-laning impossible/suicide if you don't have MR Glyphs?

Seems like buying a Chalice early on doesn't reduce ANY damage taken when you don't take MR glyphs. More often than not, it's a trap purchase.

But is taking AP/lvl glyphs now an instant "you lose" choice?

I don't play mid often, and when I do it's usually with someone cheesy like Garen. That said when I actually play a mid laner I use a full page of AP/lvl runes. No MR, no armor, just AP/lvl.

It's all about what level of risk you're willing and able to put up with for that potential reward. So to answer your question no, it's not an instant loss, however if you don't fully understand the risk every decision comes with you're probably better off using a meta rune page.

Depends what champs you are running.

Personally, I have never played with MR Glyphs ... still using Flat AP Glyphs to compensate the weak early game of my Cass.

at higher elos, a lot of people don't run mr. It depends on the matchup and how well you can avoid damage.

I usually run a full AP rune page. The rune page is nothing but AP so it gives 36 AP and with ring I'd have 61 AP at level 1. I normally don't have any issues and don't really need the MR so the answer to your question would be no. Then again I'm a passive laner so I don't generally need the MR to survive lane and the extra damage you do with full AP runes allows it to be easier to force your opponent back for an early advantage. The only time I go mid lane with MR is if I'm playing Galio, in which case I run a 21 AP, 18 MR rune page and pray to face a AP champion.

It depends on the mid. Flat MR and Flat Armor really don't do a whole lot (We're talking, effectively, between a 7 and 10% HP increase against that type of damage). So, 13 MR is going to be 70ish HP increase for most characters.

So, if you're constantly at the mercy of ranged attacks (Such as Akali or Fizz), that 70ish HP would matter. If you're highly aggressive early and all in (Yas, for instance), then it matters. If you have a way of regen/sustain, (such as Vlad, though he probably shouldn't be mid) then it matters. But if you're ranged and aren't at constant mercy of harass like Morgana, Lux, etc? It's not needed.

Most mages are better off with scaling CDR simply because it allows them to max CDR with just morello's and masteries. That will give them way more survivability than an extra 70-200 HP.

Depends on the match up. If you are "Good" at your champion and avoiding damage while doing damage and its a even or favorable match up you are totally fine not running mr.
