Can we all agree that plants aren't as bad as we thought they were going to be?

Numb3rs··100 votes·3,568 views

As a jungle main they are nowhere near as bad as i originally thought.

before the preseason they were getting immense hate but i personally have never had a situation where i thought they were unbalanced or un-fun in any way

what are your opinions? nobody seems to be talking about them

I don't find them terrible, but I also don't find them particularly interesting or compelling.

Pretty much what I imagined when reading about them, you kind of go "oh, this is here, guess I might as well use it / destroy it so the enemy can't use it", but that's about it.

Baron Perenolde9 votes

Exactly this. I'm not sure why Riot went with such simplistic changes when the last season's jungle changes seemed to be working out.

quasistellar5 votes

I'm also confused as to why Riot felt compelled to change the jungle. Last season's jungle felt the best it ever has with all the different routs you could take, and the jungle buffs felt pretty useful.

MrWasjig2 votes

Because they can't just let a good idea sit. Whenever something is working they just can't leave it be "It's been solved! Ergo it must be changed!" What is their obsession with calling stuff "solved" recently anyway? Seems like a pretty weaksauce excuse for making change for the sake of change...

Because plants ended up being another near-worthless gimmick that adds nothing substantial to the game.

The blue one still feels pretty terrible IMO.

The blue one still feels pretty terrible IMO.

i think its good but there's just a lot less opportunities to make it useful. its really good for invading or scouting baron/dragon pits

You mean because it's overpowered or?

You mean because it's overpowered or?

Yeah it does a bit too much. I mean, it even automatically pings Champions it spots, lol.

Nameless Voice3 votes

I think it should put an eye over you if you are spotted by it, until the effect wears off. You are being revealed, which you can tell because you can see the wave, but you can't tell how long it lasts for.

(This especially relevant for stealth champions who are spotted by it, who really deserve to know that they are spotted through their stealth.)

Battlecast Sona7 votes

there are little glowy spores over your head while you're revealed. This animation also appears over wards or traps that are revealed by the orb.

Nameless Voice1 votes

Pretty sure I've been spotted by the plant while playing Evelynn (while stealthed) and not seen any particle effects (which honestly made me confused as to whether I was visible or not.)

Strad2 votes

While they are there, they are hard to see, especially if particle effects are turned way down (went into a custom game with a friend just now and tested this). Easier to see at max settings, but still not optimal. I think Riot should make it much easier to see.

I completely agree and have had this issue in the past as well, even on max settings.

Schoenberg1 votes

Those pings let people like me in bronze see people easier... Don't deprive me of the one way I win games.

Talisid5 votes

I think its fair because the sight wave appears on the map for the enemy team letting them know where you are. I have to think carefully about when i use it as a jungler to not give away my position.

Electro5222 votes

That's right. The higher elo you are in, the less appealing the blue plant becomes. I'm sure using them in pro games is a big no-no, for its a dead giveaway of where your jungler is.

At least for the laning phase. When the fight over Baron and Dragon control starts to roll around, I bet they're invaluable......interesting how it works that way.

Troll for Trump3 votes

Higher elo players will be able to make better use of it for counterjgling, but also be able to use the usage of the plant itself as a means to counter-counterjgl.

So it sorta cancels out.

Blue plant is a little OP

Healing plant was shoehorned to counteract the jgl buffs

Knockup plant is unecessary

I'm still waiting for their removal next season.

They're about exactly what I expected, actually. They don't break the game - they just add nothing to it and are annoying to deal with. They sometimes offer a lot of power for free and you can't actually plan around them so it is completely skill-less/stupid.

On the flipside - I don't blame Riot for trying shit out. I like that they are willing to experiement, I just wish they'd revert stuff more often (ever, until recently) when no one likes it. That said, plants haven't broken the game. I'll be happy for their removal in S8.

Catastrop8 votes

I still don't like the Scrying Bloom. It's just more vision hate.

Shadragon8 votes

They're exactly as bad as I expected them to be. They're boring, don't accomplish anything they were intended to and are totally pointless overall, exactly as I thought they would be. Still, as far as pointless changes for their own sake, the jungle has suffered far worse in previous preseasons.

Kinda sad that the nicest thing to be said about them is "at least they weren't the worst thing to hit the jungle"

Irelia Bot6 votes

are they as bad? No

Are they really adding anything good to the game? I would say the blast cone is actually hurting the game more then anything.

Xela Syab5 votes

I feel like it benefits roaming supports more than junglers tbh.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo4 votes

you get reported for roaming

Xela Syab1 votes

part of supports job is to ward for objectives and try to keep eyes on the jungler.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo2 votes

yet riot threatens to ban you for roaming as a support and being off meta

Crimson Cupcake2 votes

Atanchan3 votes

Yeah that's completely wrong.

There's actually a post on the boards that explains it was inadequate communication that caused the ban, not the strategy.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo2 votes

but it also shows him explaining what he was doing prior to game start by typing out a paragraph

and the email he got riot told him he was hurting his team by roaming and not being in bot lane...

after that became known then riot came out with their post and tried to spin it for PR

Atanchan3 votes

That's not communicating with your team. That's bashing their teeth in with a sign and forcing them to abide by the stuff you wrote on it without considering any sort of qualms they might have with it.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo1 votes

well that is why I reported the person who I played with last night who at last pick of the champ select with no communication to his team asking if it was ok locks in thresh ad top and rushes crit...

Atanchan3 votes

I think you should probably read what Riot actually writes instead of going off of what the elves in your mind tell you what Riot wrote.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo1 votes

I read what riot wrote after the video went viral showing the email he got back from riot support which basically threatens him...

Atanchan3 votes

So you're admitting to being intentionally obtuse and / or contrarian?

Well, at least you're upfront about it. I guess.

To be honest, that sounds like a ... kinda unhealthy definition of "communication." It's meant to be, y'know, a two-way thing, but I get the feeling that, well, you're an utter doormat and you'd tell yourself it's fine when you're barraged with yelling without any chance to get so much of a peep in edge-wise.

That's really going to lead to dangerous relationships later down the line, y'know.

WinTheWarOnPants4 votes

the blast cone and the honey fruit aren't that bad. blast cone can leave you really feeling cheated when you lose a kill or fight because it just happened to be there, but overall it's fine i guess. I have to admit that i have had some pretty crazy fun moments with it. The blue vision plant on the other hand is actually more cancer than i thought it would be. I thought it was just crazy free vision at first. then i found out its a FREAKING MASSIVE item 3364 that reveals all stealthed units/traps/wards.... yeah... rito can fuk right off with that one...

higura4 votes

honestly, i find them to be worse than i thought...(mostly because i didn`t thought they would be any problem at all).

with the removal of pink wards and the many items that came with preseason to clear the normal wards, did we certainly not need a free version in form of a plant.

the yellow one could pretty much just have been a normal health pick up like we have in other game modes, as the slow dont really do much. its just free sustain with no good reason to be there.

the red one was never really that much of a problem, still seems rather pointless having them in the game...

overall: does the plants just seem to add extra power to places that didn`t really need it.

but thats just my take on them.

DrCyanide2 votes

with the removal of pink wards

Pink wards weren't removed, they were buffed, renamed, and given a new icon.

item 2055 control wards are better Pink wards.

higura1 votes

tbh, don`t i see much of a point in your comment, you took a phase out of contex and started creating a strawman of me saying pink was better than item 2055, when i never said anything of the sort...

i said: "with the removal of pink wards and the many items that came with preseason to clear the normal wards, did we certainly not need a free version in form of a plant."

DrCyanide1 votes

I was just clarifying that they weren't gone, just renamed. You see a lot of misconceptions pop up on the boards, and with item set editing being removed it's not hard to imagine someone thinking Pink Wards were gone in any variation.

warpenguin5554 votes

Plants are actually fine, but i really dont think smite buffs should have been removed still. Both could exist. Also nerf Scryer

what are your opinions? nobody seems to be talking about them

The vast majority of topics here are complaints and criticism regarding the game, so the relative scarcity of plant threads is a good sign.

I used to be really skeptical of plants when they were first announced. The very first presentation videos did a pretty terrible job by showcasing them at their "full" power, and made them look like random get-out-of-jail-free cards that would arbitrarily give one side a lucky break and screw over the other. I also thought they'd be a lot more random, and therefore a lot less stable. I thought they'd make the game feel a lot less fair as a whole, and I was wrong.

Ultimately, plants add good gameplay, and in the vast majority of cases don't feel like anyone's getting an unfair advantage over the other. Perhaps there are some more adjustments that could be done (Scryer's Bloom is a bit strong right now, and should probably not reveal traps or wards), but otherwise this was an excellent move by Riot, and a risk that paid off.

Sire Hippington2 votes

They are not as bad as thought, but that still doesn't make them good by any means. They are a rather pointless gimick that sometimes screws you over.

Jhin My Sights2 votes

Personally I have no problem with any of the plants, except for the big bang boom plant that shoots you away. It's mechanics are clunky and feel unrewarding asf. Keeping all the other plants would be marvelous but I'd like to see the bomb plant taken away.

Pandemic Punch1 votes

This is pretty much how I feel about it too.

Except I think the plant that heals you gives too much of an advantage to hard pushers and lane bullies.
