Why Not Have Aery Proc Off Spell Cast Hit Only?

Aery is getting nerfed next patch, but it got me thinking "Why not just make it on cast trigger only?" The big reason people have been using it on pretty much everything is because of how reliable it is. It currently procs on DOT effects, sheen, etc etc too. So why not lower its reliability?

I agree with the PBE Nerfs to its damage for this upcoming patch, but if it remains an issue they should hit reliability next so not everyone will want to use it anymore. It will mainly only be used on the champions that are suppose to use it.

No the big reason almost everybody has been using it that it's just so much better then comet. Comet barely does more damage, but can easily be avoided and has a longer cooldown (Aery's cooldown is just it's return time).

Aery is supposed to be easy to apply, as it's the new equivalent of Deathfire touch. Nerfing it so the classes that are supposed to use it (DoT classes mainly) would properly mean everyone just takes comet. A small damage reduction with a buff to comet is all that needs to be done.

did i mention it even procs on auto attacks?

In some cases Aery is the only decent Rune to use...

I think Aery and Comet need to remain distinct, so making it apply only on spell hits might just make it too similar offensively.

An idea to fix it: Make it only go to an ally upon affecting them with a spell, or a heal/shield on yourself . Aery on yourself wouldn't grant the shield. After you grant Aery to yourself or an ally, their next spell/attack sends Aery out for a hit, before returning to you.

This keeps it as an enchanter-focused keystone, but still allows a number of other champs to utilize it in solo lanes. Not being able to just spam it offensively off cooldown should fix some of the abuse cases without gutting it's usefulness on everyone.

I literally just had a game against Teemo with Aery top, I was Nasus and thought I was against a Yasuo (who was jungle in the end). I couldn't do anything for the first few minutes and our fed botlane just wouldn't come top after they took their tower. I won that game but man it was stupid.

Aery has no cool down besides going back to the user but it instantly went back to me because of Teemo's poison. So for most people and supports it would proc once then return until they did something else but for Teemo it was twice every 2 seconds, few seconds later he does it again. Comet has a cooldown, 20 seconds early. Plus I can dodge that while I can't with Aery.

Little salty sure but I did not enjoy that game.

Why Do You Write This Way ?

Comet should have be an active add to an item like predator. This way it will have rival Aery in a better way then right now, indeed the new active will have hit harder but since it will be around 2-3 min cd it wouldnt be a big problem to balance.

I too wondered if one auto attack is too low a gate.

If the damage ends up being weak enough supports might actually prefer the damage part being harder to trigger.

Swap their triggers, Let comet trigger off AAs as well and aery proc only on spells.

Boom. no lost of uniqueness, aery can have it's dmg nerf reverted without it being as powerful. And comet will have more flexibility on triggering it.

I think Aery should be usable on champs like Singed/Teemo since they have no other option in Sorcery, though Aery shouldn't be DFT 2.0. It's an enchanter rune with a reliable offensive component. I think a lower base damage for a high avilability due to the reducable cd should already be enough to justify it as an alternative even if you can't take advantage of the ally spell cast component.

It should work this way: you have to first activate the shield component before being able to activate the damage. For instance, a Soraka would have to heal someone once before being able to send Aery attacking. And then she should heal someone again, etc etc. Would deter offensive only use.
Then Comet should be made good, otherwise mages would be screwed.

what do you mean nerf? on damage? on cd? because in my opinion aery doesn't deal such damage... 50-60 damage after all... WHILE dark harvest can deal up to 600
