Thought Experiments aren't Demands

90% of the time if you ask someone to articulate themselves they either choke or recite 'bad idea is bad: no hypothetical explanation you don't deserve it". The whole point of thought experiments is to explore, there is no right or wrong, there is no winning, it's hypothetical. There seems to be a lot of insecurities for what is condoned discussion, most of it directed at nerfing or buffing a champion since it's the only thing protected by circle jerks and bandwagons.

It feels frustrating to get mass activity to only see discussion boil down to: "yes I agree". Or it devolves into a civil war of good and evil, each side thinking they're righteous and the other harbingers of Satan himself.

If you're not with or against something you're even more shit out of luck. What's so wrong with being impartial? Maybe problematic champions could be less frustrating to play against by now if the forum vendetta wasn't focused on trashing them to avenge their KDA. Shutting down conversations does not resolve issues, it only further entrenches the opposition; the issue remains and now less people who need to hear the differences in opinion have deleted their only format to hear it.

This isn't all doom and gloom, I like the forums here, I've been on boards that had rampant bullying when people disagreed with each other, the unpopular side would get shit on, cross-hair on their back for future posts, though I've only seen positive fame on here so far, maybe the former is hidden.

I would ask what would it take to get people to open up more broadly, but does it just boil down to fear of being wrong? That's a tough nut to crack.

Do you want to know why so many people come to these boards just to moan and bicker? It's because Riot designed these boards in order to gather player feedback and to have more open dialogue with the players. However, most of the time, they ignore the most important board (hint: Gameplay) while they post a plethora of comments in more casual boards like Story, Art & Sound or Memes & Games. Just click on the Red Tracker link on the left-hand side of your page and tell me how many Rioter responses can be found on the Gameplay board over the last week. It's pathetic (to be quite honest, fam). Then you wonder why so many people are upset with Riot. It's not that hard to figure out. People get frustrated because they mistake a lack of communication for a lack of interest on Riot's part. Then you also wonder why these boards are so toxic. It's because a lack of open communication only pours more fuel on the fire and feeds the flames of toxicity on these boards.

Sure, the daily Meddler's Gameplay Thoughts is a step in the right direction but it's not enough to satisfy a large number of players. Communication is a two-way street, senpai. Okay, I'll excuse myself now.

Humor this for a moment:

A)

You're a Rioter looking to engage with the forum, you have an idea, everyone shits on it, they don't tell you why, they just shit on it, they now have demands for their problems, you're preoccupied trying to figure out what to do with the former, the community didn't help but the patch cycle and deadlines forces you to push something through, it's not even what you wanted, now the forums are on a personal vendetta against you.

B)

You engage the community taking down suggestions word for word, they are tested and are all objectively terrible in-game.

How do you respond?

How do we set up a system where both sides can speak without things getting personal or arbitrary?

I honestly think that's impossible at this point in time. First impressions matter, and the boards community has given a lot of bad ones to the Rioters who post on the Gameplay boards.

The biggest issue the community at large feels is their voice is unheard right? We'd need a platform where they can voice themselves without letting them have a paragraph of redundancies.

  • Let's say a Rioter makes a thread
  • It's highly specific, nothing too broad maybe one ability per thread
  • Community only gets to post once, no more than 200 characters
  • Tally the prominent patterns of opinion on a thread linked to the old
  • Riot then blogs on the primary pattern of opinions
  • Let the game designers do their thing
  • Rinse and repeat

Some good ideas. It's too bad that, ironically, this system will probably be overlooked and not actually implemented to improve the feedback and communication channels between Riot and the players.

It doesn't have to happen but you can always make thought experiments for fun, I don't know what to think of self-defeating pessimism, are what if's for fun off the table?
