Runes are WAY Too Expensive
Not to mention rune pages. How are we expected to get an average champion pool plus tier 3 runes by level 30?

rune **pages **being so expensive is the real issue.
I think the rune prices should remain as is. Its a FREE to play game. The high rune prices are to encourage people to use RP to buy champions and runes pages. Teir 3 runes are ENDGAME content, good games don't make endgame content easily unlockable. You don't see Blizzard giving away the best-in-slot equipment to their players. No! the players have to spend hours, days, or even WEEKS to get that one little piece of equipment that is just slightly better than the second-best-in-slot. League of Legends shouldn't be any different.
Options for those complain about rune prices:
I own all the champions, 20 rune pages, and I almost have ALL the runes unlocked. There wasn't really a shortcut, I've played for over 2,000 hours. haha
I've played since Season 1 and only have 5 rune pages, maybe 1/3 of the runes, and still 20 or so more champions to go. According to this, I've played 1900+ hours.
You could buy teir 2 runes, they're DIRT cheap... only like 35 IP each. If you want the best (tier 3), you have to really work for it.
You'll be working for years at the current cost for tier 3 runes unless you play LOTS of games a day.
You could buy IP boosts to get IP to buy teir 3 runes...
Spending money shouldn't be necessary to compete with other players on an even playing field.
You could grind out the IP during party up bonus weeks (join the chat room in client "LFG" to find pickup groups to get full 5 bonus).
Not everyone has time to play a lot of games every day. Even then, it's possible to become bored after a couple of games or just not feel like playing League at the time. At that point it becomes more of a chore than anything.
OR you could just play to game like everyone else and just save up for them.
See my first sentence.
Here's some math on how long it takes to get all the champions and 2 standard rune pages.
It sounds to me like you've prioritized getting champions over getting runes. People don't need to have 128 champs (or even 108 champs like you).
yeah, also generally agreed upon OP champs such as Vayne, Riven, Yas are 6300 whereas champs like Poppy are 450. so, even at a small champ pool, there is a priority on expense.
Garen, Annie, Master Yi.
Yeah, those 450 IP champs are such trash.
oh, you're right, I see sooo many threads complaining about them
What about FUN champs. Most 450-1350 champs are incredibly boring.
I prefer strategical options and gameplay over statistical options. Hence, I prioritize champions. The game can be played decently well with only the two beginner rune pages and generalized runes but a lot of champions and roles will be poorly optimized. Runes aren't necessary, but they are preferred.
A large champion pool, on the other hand, is almost required for ranked. If the enemy picks something that's good against every champion you own for that role, then you're basically screwed unless you play something off-meta. There are also times when you get forced into a role that you don't play and therefore don't have champions for. Having a bigger pool just provides many more options than having more rune choices. I can't really justify spending IP on runes and pages given their absurd costs.
None of that really has anything to do with my post though. My main point was that "endgame content" shouldn't take four years to achieve, and that's being generous with the numbers. One of the estimations for ALL of the content is 7+ years.
To respond to Bergk again... Riot isn't Blizzard, and League isn't World of Warcraft. Just because Blizzard runs World of Warcraft a certain way doesn't mean Riot has to run League the same way. Saying that League shouldn't be any different is just ignorant. There are plenty of free games with similar systems that don't require such a massive amount of time to unlock all the content, and they do just fine financially.

LOL - this is funny imho.....so many "reasons", yet not one being honest. It's because LoL AS Blizzard HAS to make MONEY. Please stop these bs "reasons" and just be freakin' real!!! Rofl - just like WoW and every gaming company, you can't get one single person to say "BECAUSE WE WANT YOUR CASH AND WE DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT!".. Come on - stop treating clients as idiots and be straight with them - they are why YOU are even STILL operating a business - whithout us you are NOTHING! lol
Riot need to make money so they charge for runes so they can make great champions like darius
And Garen, Fiora, Mordekaiser..
Don't forget Riven
Or Yasuo.
Where's Zed in all of this?
The unseen blade is not easy to see.
It's just a cash thing to support the game...we spend cash for champs and save IP for runes....well thats what they want at least.Just wish i had been wiser when i started lol
By the time I hit 30, I had enough IP to buy the runes for an AD page, an AP page, and a support page. And I still had almost 17k IP left to buy champs. If I had chosen to play support champs with either the AD or AP rune setup (which isn't uncommon), I would have had another 6k IP for champs and would have only needed 2 rune pages total.
There are 12 450 IP champs, and 8 of them are picked in more than 6% of games, with 5 of them picked in more than 10% of games. With 17k IP, you could get Annie, Garen, Yi, Sivir and Ashe and then get 10 1350 champs. You can even get Tristana and Alistar for free (well, Garen as well). If you don't want to give away access to personal information on Facebook/Youtube/Twitter, you could create a throw-away account on those platforms just to get those free champs.
Want a couple of 6300 IP champs? You probably won't have enough IP to have 16 champs for ranked by level 30. But you would only need another 7k IP or so after hitting 30 if you got 2 6300s, 8 of the 450s, and 6 of the 1350s.
Can you get 16 6300 champs by the time you hit 30 without spending any money on RP? No.
I'm not sure what you personally consider an "average" champion pool. If you mean a champion pool comparable to the average player, then the answer is you're not expected to have that by level 30. And it's unreasonable for a new player to expect to have the same champion pool as an average player by the time they first hit level 30.
it is called spending money.
You can't buy runes with RP.
you can buy champs, the question is how you get a decent champ pool with runes as expensive as they are?
spend money; on champs. Plus you can also spend money on IP boosts.
Don't waste your breath. you're speaking to the "now" generation. they are too impatient to grind for stuff.
At a rate of a quick ARAM game a day, everyday, at 100% winrate for 200 IP a game...
It's not an issue of "now ", it's an issue of "not 6.6 **years ** from now." And that's just for the champions.
there is a reason you can buy IP boosts, no point in spending RP to get IP other than runes. You can buy IP boosts to get the IP for runes quicker.
Keep playing like most people and grind it out. Its called progression.
I actually agree, when a set of 9 runes cost as much as a new released champion there is a big problem..
you don't, now play more games and stop going directly to ranked as soon as you hit 30 so you don't come here whining about "i'm stuck in bronze but i'm really challengour!"
Runes are expensive, but I just bought them a little at a time, making sure I never went below 6k ip and eventually finished two rune pages in the span of less than a month. There are plenty of cheap champions too that you can play and are really fun and easy to use. During that time when I really needed runes, I just played the same few champions over and over that I was really good at, so I won more games and earned more ip. (Just a tip, Leblanc is freelo, if you know how to play her).
You're not expected to have it all by the time you hit 30 and I think this is intentional. A new lvl 30 should not be jumping straight into ranked games IMO.
I would actually like to see a minimum number of summoner rift games won before ranked was available. I have played with people that did mostly aram to 30 and only had a dozen or so normal wins. Needless to say, ranked was rough for them.
I just hit lv30 and I have 6 rune pages done with T3 runes. Runes are definitely not too expensive.
^ Yup
While I do think runes are a little on the expensive side. Your thinking of having to buy so many champions that are 4800+6300 and having to buy multiple pages full of runes to fit each champion type and not general.
I don't think you ARE meant to get it by 30. Getting to level 30 means you have the option of going deeper down the rabbit hole, but the deeper you go the more time and money you will have to put into your endeavor. Do you want to be more serious about this and head into ranks? Well then you better spend money on this and get to grinding for IP. Do you just want to play around with everything else? In that case have fun with this game that is totally free UNLESS you want to buy these pretty skins.
One reasonable way to do this is to separate the currency used for runes (IP) and make a third currency.
That way, players can still have IP for champions and can still buy runes with this new currency.
flat cd blues, 820 ip each.
They should have lowered the price of runes a long time ago. Like when 6300 IP champs started to become the norm.
There are people who have been playing League for years who still don't have all the rune pages and champs. I dont want rune pages to be free, although that would be great, but they're ridiculously overpriced.
I been here since season one and you can make due with 2 rune pages 1 ad and 1 ap. Btw i own all the runes and rune pages good job at say they are too expensive not to mention i have nearly 100k ip just sitting around.
6300 IP for 1 rune page is just too much....... At least you can use runes on all pages
This game is a BUSINESS. They need to get you to spend money somehow. Yes its hard to grind up enough ip for champions and runes....thus they offer everything except runes for IRL money. Please kiddos, understand this game was not created for your entertainment, it as created to make money.
I did it pretty easily. Flat AD and AP runes and around 23 champions when I hit 30.
Lots of morons ITT defending this archaic borderline pay to win mechanic. Get with the times, not many other moba brow beat their customers so heavily to pay money that they lock basic competitive equality behind a massive grind.
