Udyr Stance Upgrades V.2

In version 1 one of this topic, I presented the idea of Udyr being able to upgrade his stances, by first bringing his 20 skill-points down to 16, and reserving levels 17 and 18 as special upgrade levels. The purpose for such a thing is to allow Udyr to actually place higher value in a particular ability and therefore be able to specialize at something unique, and this will be particularly relevant to his late game, though there have been views expressing a desire for more early game animal-stance evolution.

In version 2 my aim is to better define Udyr's core purpose as a champion and highlight what he brings to the table, as well as what he should and not.

You've probably noticed that in my proposal Udyr can upgrade only two of his abilities and might be wondering why. Viktor can upgrade all four of his abilities if he has the gold, Kha'Zix can evolve three of his abilities just by hitting his ult-levels (possibly a fourth if Rengar is on the enemy team), and Gangplank can upgrade his ultimate three times and doesn't even rely on gold but a different form of currency altogether. Fair question, and here's the basic truth of Udyr and what separates him from Gangplank, Kha'Zix, and Viktor. All three of those champions are selfish: all three champions build loads of damage with minimal hp items (Gangplank: Trinity Force, Kha'Zix Black Cleaver, Viktor Rylai's Crystal Scepter) containing no resistances whatsoever. Their jobs are to kill and keep killing because they are damage carries, and therefore want to invest as much as they can into making sure they are able to keep doing so.

Udyr is not a damage carry. He is a fighter. All damage Udyr is supposed to do should be lower than an assassin, a mage, and adc, but should be well above a standard tank or a support, this way he becomes a threat should be regarded with direct caution but not absolute terror. His main function is to run across the map as fast as he can, barreling through monsters, objectives (dragon, baron rift-herald), and split-pushing turrets. His team-fight presence is mainly as supplementary AoE damage with his Phoenix Stance, or prioritizing a single high-value target and shredding them down with Tiger Stance. Bear Stance serves multiple purposes: initiate with a burst of movement speed, secure his target by stunning them, contain them by immediately stunning their team-mates so they can't peel, and protect his own allies using the same method. Turtle Stance is ultimately Udyr's only truly selfish ability as it exists solely to keep himself shielded and provide him a source of sustainability throughout a fight.

So what are the pros and cons of each stance?

Phoenix Stance: Pros - Wave Clear, Burst, An on-hit effect that can be procced multiple times during a fight (can be used to poke through waves), provides consistent aoe damage during team fights. Cons: requires tiger stance's attack speed steroid to make full use of, meaning it is an offensive spell that relies on another offensive spell just to get itself going, is wretched at bringing down epic monsters (Dragon and Baron only) due to this lack of consistency in prolonged engagements and likewise applies to 1v1 duels.

Bear Stance: Pros - Provides mobility in the form speed and temporary elimination of unit collision (two seconds), grants Udyr access to a form of hard cc, allows him to chase down targets, and likewise can be used to escape and elude capture by enemies. Cons: The mobility bear stance grants is movement speed not a dash, therefore he requires above-average planning to execute ganks, and requires a gank target to be well-pushed in. Compounding the issue is wards: should one see Udyr coming, due to a lack of hard gap-closing ability, he can be evaded quite easily with just a light slow, and orb-walking around him is remarkably easy to do as a skilled adc.

Turtle Stance: Pros - Provides A shield and a form of healing that enables him to survive the jungle as well as fights. Cons: Honestly I can't think of any cons here.

Tiger Stance: Pros - Physical damage over time, grants instant surge of attack speed, turns Udyr into a monster duelist. Cons: Single target only therefore zero wave clear.

My ideas for stance upgrades:

Phoenix Stance Upgrade: Melting Flames - Every third basic attack causes Udyr to send out a cone of flame in front of him, dealing damage based on current health to all enemies hit.

Bear Stance Upgrade: Grizzly Chase - Upon activating bear stance, Udyr gains increased tenacity, slow reduction, scaling off a percentage of his bonus movement speed.

Turtle Stance Upgrade: Reinforced Shell - The shield received by turtle stance now scales with Udyr's maximum health, but lasts for half the duration (2.5 seconds instead of 5.) Udyr is a fighter, not a tank, and he already has AP scaling on the shield to begin with, therefore two types of scaling could prove to be far too much and would make balancing this thing a nightmare.

Tiger Stance Upgrade: Tiger's Frenzy - If Udyr scores a kill or assist with Tiger Stance's DoT, the next activation of Tiger Stance will cause Udyr to lunge in the direction he is facing. If Udyr collides with another champion he gains 1.5 seconds immunity to roots, immobilization, snares, binds, stuns, and knock-ups but can still be slowed, silenced, and suppressed.

Note: Upgrading Tiger Stance will lock-out Phoenix Upgrades and vice versa. Upgrading Turtle Stance will lockout Bear Upgrades and vice versa. I do not want Udyr having way too much offense or way too much defense.

I am still looking for more ideas for possible stance upgrades.

I would make tigerstance's lunge proc off kills and assists, so its not completely outclassed by bear stance and has a better clean up potential. I also would give bear stance slow resist (scaling maybe) and move tenacity boost to turtle stance giving tenacity for each nearby enemy.

I like the idea of what you want for Udyr, but it's just not Udyr. It took me a while to think of what would be good for Udyr and I came across similar ideas to those of your own. What I'm posting is what I wrote recently, but just never posted because I forgot about it until now. You should aim for something more along the lines of improving what a champion is already good at.

Reasoning for changes: Udyr is a good utility jungler and the suggested changes are just more or less to play on this fact.

Passive- Changes are to make Udyr’s already fast clear even better to open up better options as a counter jungler or even to support the play style of a heavy ganker. Overall the mobility also plays into mid to late game where Udyr can better excel as a defensive jungler to help cover objectives such as Baron/Dragon/Rift Herald or even simply just defensive warding or moving towards towers/split pushing.

Q- Changes are to simply make Udyr’s Q more well rounded and adjustable to certain situations also reducing damage heavy item sets. The changes are more in mind to deal with heavy tanks and pesky life steal champs as well to improve overall dueling.

W- Changes are to make Udyr better at what he is already good at those are jungle sustain, diving, and fight initiation.

E- Changes are to make diving/initiating fights better than what it already is.

R- Changes are to make fighting much, much stronger reducing need to optimize for damage heavy item sets. The changes are the same as with Tiger Stance they are simply to boost overall dueling and help deal with pesky champs that would normally force you to build one way or another that would not favor your current situation.

Udyr, The Spirit Walker

Passive- Monkey’s Agility Upon activating an ability Udyr gains Monkey’s agility which can stack up to X times. Each stack of Monkey’s Agility grants Udyr X movement and attack speed. While in the jungle or river the movement speed gained from this passive is doubled.

NEW: This movement speed is doubled while your are in the jungle or river.

Q- Tiger Stance Active Passive: Udyr gains bonus attack speed and every 3rd basic attack that Udyr conducts will apply the Gouge debuff.

Active: Udyr gains bonus attack speed and upon his next basic attack he will apply Gouge and grievous wounds to his target. Gouge causes the target to bleed for damage equal to X% of their current health and lose X attack speed over X duration.

NEW: Grievous wounds. Gouge debuff.

W- Turtle Stance Active Passive: Udyr passively generates a shield while out of combat that absorbs X damage. Every 3rd basic attack Udyr restores X amount of his missing health.

Active: Udyr gains a shield that absorbs X amount of damage that persists for X duration. Additionally Udyr takes X% reduced damage.

NEW: Passive shield. Damage Reduction.

E- Bear Stance Active Passive: Udyr gains bonus movement speed and additionally ignores unit collision. Udyr’s first basic attack against a target stuns them for X duration and will be unable to stun them again for X duration.

Active: Udyr gains double the passive bonus movement speed and upon his next basic attack he will leap a short distance to his target and apply Vulnerable debuff to his target. Vulnerable causes the target to lose X Armor and Magic Resistance for X duration.

NEW: Double movement speed. Vulnerable debuff.

R- Phoenix Stance Active Passive: Udyr gains Drafting Winds: While moving towards a champion within X radius Udyr gains X movement speed for X duration and cannot be reapplied for X duration. Udyr’s 3rd basic attack unleashes a wave of flames in a cone in front of him dealing X magic damage.

Active: Udyr unleashes a wave of flames X amount of times for X duration encircling himself dealing X magic damage. Enemies damaged by this effect are applied Phoenix Fire: Target is dealt magic damage equal to X% of their health over X duration.

NEW: Drafting winds buff. Phoenix Fire debuff.
