Whats with everyone defending Dominion?

I wake up and see on surrender @ 20 that dominion is being removed, not that big of a deal though because their are some valid reasons behind it. Check the forums and see everyone is complaining about Riot removing it and just how much they all adore the game mode/map. I'm sorry to say this but wake up everyone, this "game mode" is now used for people to go in a customs and play hide and seek because the spark this mode once had is completely lost.

I always find it ironic that everyone is so quick to grab their pitchforks and complain to Riot about removing something yet statistics show that only 0.5% of people even play Dominion anymore. As much as everyone always talk about how they'll play the hell out of modes that aren't basic 5v5 summoners rift like one for all and hexa kill, i always see within 3-4 days that the amount of players who continue to play these modes drop drastically in no time.

A fair and understandable argument is keeping Dominion as a custom games map/mode and taking a rework of the mode into consideration :p

Apparently a fair amount care about this, at least enough to go on the forums and upvote anything with "keep dominion" in the title. i'm glad you at least understand that the removal of dominion isn't that big of a deal :p

And it is 100% Riot's fault that this happened. The moment they made the gamemode they pretty much abandoned it, and they even made changes that actively pushed people away from it like removing the ability to see Dominion MMR.

Riot didn't give this map much support and could of done so much more with it, which is completely true. On the other hand i do remember them doing a decently cool event for the game mode involving shurima and azir i believe and even that didn't spark much interest in this game mode. Riot may not have made the best changes to Dominion but the same could be said about summoners rift, yet even with horrible balance changes people still stuck with the mode because he was still that much enjoyable.

The two most appealing modes are Summoners rift and Aram, one of which (aram) doesn't even receive any huge updates and usually gets small item tweaks in most the patches. Aram is a great example of a mode that hasn't been given any major changes yet stays popular and appealing :p

That was not "for the gamemode". That was Riot reusing assets for a completely different temporary gamemode.

Regardless, you would still think that would create popularity for Dominion

No, that only creates temporary interest in the new fancy mode that's only around for two weeks, which people only played because it came with four free icons, one of which most people had to grind hard for.

It wasn't reflective of how Dominion played at all, so no interest was generated for the mode whatsoever.

People who played the mode did not come to the forums because the forum for them was deleted a long time ago. Their mode is being removed so they come to the forums for the first time in a long time to complain about it.

Because there are far more legitimate reasons to not remove the mode, not the least of which is that Riot has never truly supported Dominion as a viable game mode in any form or capacity.

They support it but keeping the servers, the shurima event they did awhile back and continued support to fix bugs, balance the game or anything else they may add. As i said to someone else, Aram really gets the same amount of support as Dominion yet stays overwhelmingly more popular.

Having long queue times and a small 0.5% player base still actively playing this mode (pretty small when the community is in the millions) then that really does show its not that appealing or popular of a mode

SR makes them so much money t hat the cost to maintain dominion should be trivial in comparison. It all comes down to money, but even that isn't much of a valid reason.

Also, riot's faliure to support the mode is the main reason it's dead today, but the only thing Riot is apologizing for is not pulling the plug sooner.

Twisted Treeline and Aram haven't received any major updates in literally forever and only get balanced changes, bug fixes and tweaks JUST like Dominion currently gets. If it was about money then Riot wouldn't even bother with having servers up for it this long, let alone make this announcement 4 years after release.

Again, its funny how people pull out their pitchforks to complain about Dominions removal when i bet 95% of them haven't played it in months or even years

Well it seems quite a number of the complainants here are upset because it's also being removed from custom games, when it was actually rather common for people to use the Dominion map for other fun stuff (hide and seek, find the Teemo, etc). So the reason this is a big deal goes far beond just Dominion itself.

As i said in my post above, the game mode still being in customs is a completely fair argument and makes complete sense. Even revamping the idea of Dominion and making it a ton better makes sense, but leaving this dead game mode up on live makes no sense.

I don't think lack of popularity is a valid reason to remove a feature. It does no harm to anyone to simply exist, and as much as Riot wants to talk about money, they make too much money for the maintenance cost to be a real issue.

Also, people talk about long queue times, but unless you were queueing for draft mode, queue times were like 1-3 minutes. Hardly long at all.

Lack of popularity defiantly doesn't mean something needs to go, it however does show a very interesting thing about Dominion. The point iv tried to convey is that Twisted Treeline and Aram don't get much support, yet still stay decently popular, so if that truly is the case, then why isn't Dominion succeeding?

I'm not doubting that Dominion doesn't deserve more support, but at the same time that could be said about twisted treeline and Aram. Regardless, this mode is far from what it truly could be and because of that it badly needs to be work shopped in the mean time. Its obviously not very appealing to new players and isn't getting enough popularity

Right. But Riot is too lazy to give it the attention it needs to be viable. I don't think anyboy disagrees that it needed to be improved. But they did next to nothing to try to improve it, even early on. About the most we got was the removal of unnecessary global map modifiers and modified versions of time-based items to account for the mode's shorter duration.

They also insisted that a ranked queue wouldn't have changed anything, but ranked worked wonders for 3v3 - Even if it meant people attempting to use it to get to Gold fast near the end of a season (lol).

Completely agree ^.^ Thank you for contributing your opinion and insight on this thread, after all the goal on here for others to list their opinions, have a debate and try to take what we can from other peoples opinion in order to try and meet in the middle.

Please don't take this thread as a way for me to bash Dominion or the people who enjoy it... This whole thread was to show this game mode is obviously not getting the support it needs and if Riot is truly never gonna give it justice, why bother keeping it around in the queues? Whether others agree with it or not, i still think a lot can be learned from this whole conversation.

One of which is that Riot should do more to support these sort of game modes rather then prioritizing summoners rift over anything else.

ARAM was also implemented purely because of how popular of a custom game it was; it should be no surprise that the community plays the shit out of it, because the entire idea was spawned by them. Dominion was a mode created by Riot, which was promised to be a competitive mode by Riot, and which never got any support from Riot.

And if we're going to use queue times anecdotally (since I see only a Rioter claiming that there was long queue times and no actual statistics to back it up), my ARAM queue times are just as long if not longer than my Dominion queue times are, and I am quite high Elo in Dominion.

This is entirely an issue of Riot just not wanting to put in the effort to balance multiple maps even though they have both the staff, the tech, the time, the talent, and the dedication. No one wants to put in the effort to reviving a mode that they thoroughly have already killed and now they're trying to hide their mistake rather than own up to it and even have a middling team of people working to try and make the mode more enjoyable for those who can still play it.

Dominion still gets balance changes and bug fixes which if the mode itself was any good, would be plenty for a side mode. The issue here is that the mode itself is weak and the sort of "support" your looking for is completely revamping the mode and making it more enjoyable for players.

Here is a screenshot of how much more support twisted treeline and aram get, being an actual popular game mode

The issue has nothing to do with Dominion being a badly designed mode. You want to know why Dominion gets less playerbase than Treeline and ARAM? Because it's actually a genuinely new mode. It has completely different objectives and teamplay, whereas ARAM and Treeline are just minor variations on the gameplay of Summoner's Rift. There was no sort of tutorial to help explain Dominion to new players like there is with SR, and without actual structural support from Riot, people just left it thinking "oh this map is just TDM with some boring towers."

I appreciate you talking down to me on points I never even brought up though, I really enjoyed you trying to use me as a strawman so you can insult everyone who actually likes or liked Dominion without even having to think about the mode. You'd fit right in with the Riot Dominion team.

Wow.... You said pretty clearly in a early comment that Riot never supported Dominion in any form of capacity, yet the screenshot above is to show that neither twisted treeline or Aram get much support either, in fact basically the same. I'm not trying to be unreasonable in this whole debate and can even say your 100% correct that Dominion has completely different objectives and team play that defiantly deserves some sort of tutorial video or a better introduction.

Where exactly am i insulting others who like Dominion? I actually enjoy the game mode and even do hide and seek with friends fairly often. Enjoying something doesn't mean i need to cloud up my logic and reason... You and most the people defending Dominion use the "Riot didn't support it" argument, which clearly doesn't hold up. Twisted treeline and Aram get just as much support yet stay popular, in fact the last 2 patches their was no changes made to either of the 3 game modes!

Dominion was used for Hide & Seek mostly because Riot gave literally no fucks about the mode for years. the mode is a hell of alot of fun but riot simply just didn't care to update it like they said they would so many years ago. Riot's choice wouldn't be seen as such a bad idea if not for the way they said it.

They blamed the community for this mode dying which is highly untrue. The mode died because riot literally stopped caring about it. it's the most unique mode in the game. and has so much potential but riot just doesn't care. Obviously when you leave something alone and stop caring for it. that thing will die the people that love that thing can't do anything but voice their opinion since the ones who own are the ones that make the final decision.

Critmaster Garen1 votes

problem i see with it, yes it was an unpopular gamemode. but riot also never gave it any real support after its release. no further item and champion balance updates dedicated to the mode, no ranked que, most of the time not even mention of it.

over the years dominion players really started initiatives to get riot to work on it a bit more, and there was never a reaction to it.

basically nobody played the gamemode because they didnt support it. and they didnt support it because nobody played it.

it just feels wrong to completely remove the mode without an honest attempt to revitalize it.
