To everyone complaining about Vel'kozs mage update
I bet 85% of you don't even play him on a regular basis... "Hes really healthy right now and still really unique " Hence why Lolking says hes at 2% popularity?

I'm a Vel'koz main and I'm fine with them updating him. As long as they work with us, and keep us updated I see nothing wrong with making him more unique.

I love Vel'koz personally and think hes a really cool champion. But i think everyone is going a bit overboard with this update.... We don't currently know what it entails and in the past Riot has always given us some pretty good communication over what they plan to do without giving a whole ton away. While we both obviously see Vel'koz as a great champion, im always open to see what they can do with him

I say its half and half... The community will really complain about anything (myself included obviously) and i think we all go completely over board. They are touching a champion with a 3% popularity rate and suddenly everyone on the boards grabs their pitch forks because they think they will completely overhaul his kit.
The best thing about Vel is that he's balanced.
The worst thing about Vel is that he's balanced.
Many people don't play balanced champions. They play whatever flavor of the month is strongest after the last patch.

Said it perfectly! Being balanced isn't always a good thing. I think he needs to be more powerful in order to feel like his lack of mobility pays off
The problem I have with it is that he's a mage that doesn't really need an outright change when there's so many other champions that are more deserving currently. He's considered balanced by a large portion of the community and I'd be inclined to agree. He's immobile, has to work for his damage and out of all of the true damage in the game, he has the most balanced of it all.

While he may be balanced, he also won't be receiving as huge as an update as you think. This isn't a sion sized overhaul rework, most likely they will keep is Q and R and get rid of his w and e with something better. Everyone is acting like after the rework his will shoot M&M's and cotton candy and his R will blast the enemy with a instant kill ray. Don't worry, he will still be the same Hentai loving intelligence hungering underplayed mid we know today :p
I understand that the changes are likely to be minor. It's still the fact that there's champions that are in much worse positions in terms of relative balance.
He has this popularity because he is riddiculous hard to play!
Just play Vel VS Zed once with the goal to actually win the lane. Than you quickly understand his pick rate. Additinally, he is so damn positioning reliant. You have to anticipate a Teamfight long before it starts to find a good and save spot to ult from. And IF you ult, you're screaming 'I ROOTED MY SELFE RIGHT HERE COME KILL ME!' ^^
However.. if you did well. You win the fight for your team.
Vel'koz is in pretty good spot right now - but I dont mind a few tweaks here and there. Maybe I will pick him up more frequently. Because one thing they said is completely true:
There is no REASON to pick Vel besides liking this champion. There is no Team he would perfectly fit in or a niche just provided by him. He just exists.

Exactly! hes defiantly in a good spot but that doesn't mean hes a very good pick at the moment. If the enemy has an assassin like Zed, you better hope you know to position yourself at a plat/diamond level. Hes too squishy and on top of that if he misses just 1-2 of his moves, hes left completely screwed if someone goes all in on him :p
He is picked 2% BECAUSE he's healthy. 90% of the player base will only play OP or FOTM champs. If the game was actually balanced, he would have a much better play rate.

If a champion is healthy then their is no need not to play him. Several champions became super powerful even though for months or years they were "balanced" or even "weak". Leblanc in season 3 for example was rarely played, suddenly bjergsen and many others played her and then she was considered broken. See how that works? You don't notice their power because your not up against them enough to understand it. People play troll picks or even tier 2-3 picks all the time who are below the current OP champs and still win. So why IS Vel'koz 2%?
If a champion is healthy, that's where they should be. Yes, the meta changes and certain champions become OP or UP. That is why you buff and nerf champs as this is discovered. Riot is woefully bad at making hotfixes and changes within a patch or two of a champ being broken.
Vel hasn't really had any meta since his release where he wasn't viable if you knew how to play him. That's why he is such a great champ.
