I am actually really excited for the Morde rework

I understand that my opinion is unpopular and I will probably get downvoted to oblivion for saying this, but I think this patch for Morde is one of the coolest things Riot has done in years. I'll preface this by saying that I don't really agree or disagree with their changes on Morde specifically, but this is the first time since Season 1 where Riot has actively encouraged players to use a champion in bot lane besides a ADC. I played this game since beta, and one thing I really miss, despite all of the flaws the game had at the time, was the ability to pick any type of lane composition that you wanted. It wasn't uncommon to see bot lanes of Taric/Sion or Blitz/Alistar -- champions that complemented each others' strengths perfectly - there wasn't this huge desire that there absolutely had to be an AD carry on every team, and one of the strongest team compositions at the time involved no ADCs at all - Janna/Taric/Soraka/Alistar/Heimer for endless healing and pushing. This obsession with ADCs has made the game so stagnant that almost everything revolves around it.

This is the first time that they're actively doing a part in shaking up the meta - if they can make just one champion viable in bot lane other than an ADC, that is going to be huge for opening up the meta and giving players infinitely more options for how they want to play. I personally really hope that Morde is a viable bot laner, because that is going to do one of the biggest changes to this game since that Dreamhack tournament where the meta as we know it became the only way to play the game. I know that we as a player base can technically pick whatever we want in whatever lane we want, but in practice, in a ranked match, if you pick outside the meta, you are taking a risk that someone will freak out, troll, and turn the entire team against you, ensuring that not only will you lose the game, but you'll also get reported and risk losing your account as well.

I get that people that really liked Morde are pissed, and justifiably so - I used to be an Evelynn main before they nerfed her, left her in the gutter for a year, then completely redesigned her into a Shyvana wannabe with a weak stealth. I was pissed as hell about what they did to Evelynn, and I can empathize with people who liked Morde as much as I liked Eve, but the benefits from the Morde rework (if it's successful) are huge.

I agree with the general gist of what you're saying, the idea of a champion who can break the meta by being played botlane in place of the ADC (while running an ADC in mid again instead; you can't play without an ADC of course, I mean get serious!) is an interesting and appealing one.

I just think that Morde's a fucking stupid champion to choose for this role and they really should have designed a new one, especially as the rework doesn't actually make him SUITABLE for a duo lane except that gimicky "get solo exp from minion" bullshit on his W.

I dunno, I actually think putting him bot to cover his glaring weaknesses might bring him back. He wasn't exactly in favor, and hasn't been for a long time, and when he is, he is oppressive, and unbeatable. He had to be changed drastically to be able to bring him back into the game.

-He was forced to constantly do damage to keep up his shield, which damaged him in return, and also pushed the wave -He had no gapclosers or mobility of any sort. His entire teamfight role is to R the enemy ADC and hope it dies. -He was extremely vulnerable to ganks because of his slow speed and lack of mobility -He had zero crowd control, and no way to contribute if he fell behind unless he got lucky and managed to R the adc, kill them, and manage to stay alive to control it. Not an easy task for a melee 'mage' if he doesn't have items to back him up.

His new role gives him a lot of strengths and having a support to help will make him much more viable. He can be healed by Soraka when the enemy pierces his shield so he can keep farming. He can have his support lock down the enemy to stack his Q. He can have Leona gapclose and catch up to her with W. He can have Janna shield him when his own shield is down so he can rebuild it safely. And lastly, he can hold his own since he will be ahead in EXP, so champions like Bard or Alistar can roam and impact other lanes.

His kit is actually pretty great for bot lane, it's pretty much completely anti-poke, so while it might not be great vs a Leona/Graves comp, it can do quite well against many others. He also has the potential to completely shut down Vayne, which is a nice little bonus in itself. Yeah he's a different champion completely, but that might not be a purely bad thing.

This is going to be interesting, to say the least. A champion hard to move away from lane, with a no cost heal skill to piss off all Soraka players.

I agree in general with you that this is an interesting way for Riot to go about working with Mord. But, I have my reservations and disagree with you on a few points...

Throwing him bot actually exacerbates his weaknesses (slow, low damage, no cc, no mobility). His 3rd Q proc will, and does, hit like a truck but with a 3 second window between the second and third attack it is going to be very difficult to actually hit it (lets not forget that his AS got severely nerfed as well making this even harder). The nerf to his E is just ridiculous in my opinion. His weak early game is even weaker with the base stats being cut in half.

If his support roams, like most do, he will have 1/4th of his kit gone. Some people say that this is similar to Kalista with her passive/ult, but she can kite to get away fairly easily. Mord can not.

But, the biggest issues are: his W and his identity. His identity was a solo laner who ruthlessly pushed the lane. He can not do either one now. With the gutting of base damage on his E, the lack of having his W at all unless you are being babysat, and his Q no longer being an AOE, that identity is completely gone. Some have a different perspective on what his ID was but, everyone can agree he was one of, if not the hardest lane pushers in the game. Now, that is gone.

As for his W. It is a love/hate thing for me. I do like that they kept the MS boost, I do like the healing factor as he will most certainly need that for bot lane. As for what I dislike:

  • Does NO damage unless you and your support are on top of eachother (easier to gank/both get CC'd)
  • Not castable on minions/yourself (solo lane was killed)
  • Much harder to push lane without it
  • Constant need of someone close by to use it

In a way I can see why he can not push lane anymore: being in an ADC position it would be ridiculous to allow him to have the pushing power he once did. That would be absolute hell and toxic for enemy bot lanes. But, to gimp and destroy his solo lane prowess by mitigating his W just so he has to go into bot lane? That is absurd. I have seen a Rioters comment about not trying to destroy his solo lane. The lack of understanding how Mord works to said Rioter is very apparent.

As a Mord player I am worried about this "rework". I do not believe it fixed his problems. It just made some worse (mobility, kitability and early game? Even worse now). I will continue to play him as I have already gotten some experience on the PBE with him, but do not see him as anything but a very niche pick now. Yes, he was a niche pick before but I have still been able to win against any/all top laners for the last two seasons. The outcries of the Mord community on specifically his W have fallen on CertaintyT's ears and he has said nothing. Mord players are left without a reasoning, explanation, anything on this change. We have not been shown anything to help quell our issues or reservations. Just silence. And that is why the Mord community (albeit small) has been in such an uproar.

I can just only sit and pray that they do not destroy my Olaf again, or Shyvana as they are the next ones on the list for the "Juggernaut" update.
