I'm going to build him on the tanky-ap side when he comes out (similar to the way I play Shen.)

utility is the whole stun/slow ult to gain HP and moblilty. that is his utility.

Yes, it is. But until his inevitable nerf in damage, he can be a fighter because of his passives' damage.

He'll probably be better served with a more AP heavy build, but since he is melee, there's no shame in building some amount of hybrid offense/defense items. The only things I've seen be consistent across most PBE gameplay is that Luden's and Lich Bane are pretty much his core items.

I don't want to build Luden's on him. He's too fragile, melee, and isn't poke-heavy enough to be good with Luden's.

Luden's is honestly better on assassins than poke mages IMO (Katarina especially), since the movespeed helps mobility and the passive adds quite a bit of damage to a burst rotation. That said, it's pretty dang OP on pretty much all APs right now.

Luden's is a core item and NOT just because it's recommended; but it serves him well. Of course build what you want but his early game is to mediocre to try and go tankier w/him.

depends on the enemie setup, if they have more burst/cc, you probably need some more tankiness, but else ludens adds alot damage while granting some nice ms, with ludens+lichbane+alacrity you can easily flank enemies and chase them down for cleanups, or disengage after a initial burst(and come back in with ult) just like ludens on fizz

Why wouldn't you abuse his 70% AP Ratio on his passive?

Assassin. You have %missing hp damage that scales with AP, 70% AP shield on an AoE stun, a reset button, and a Sivir-style boomerang with a long-end slow.

Resembles Gnar's boomerang more. And it's more about the damage his q does coming back then going forward.

Resembles Sivir's boomerang more. Ekko's circle thingy always comes back. Gnar's can go somewhere else entirely.

Right now (I'm on the pbe), i've seen a tank jungle Ekko (resembles a Gragas build w/iceborn) and then the glass cannon build I do. BOTH work well but I like the glass build since his q's damage is ridiculous.

I've seen Nightblue3 play him both ways. He personally prefers the tanky Ekko with the upcoming abyssal scepter. But he says the ap assassin build is viable but higher risk.

TL;DR both work, one is high risk high reward, the other is lower risk consistent dmg/cc

sadly, the last pbe changes kinda nailed him down as an ap-assasin. He's apparently not alowed for good constant dps(resonable with how much utillity he adds) However, i find it very questionable to load that utillity on a high mobillity burst assasin instead. Imo, he would have been far more interesting as a ap-fighter or even hybrid fighter rather than a assasin with potential 2.25sec aoe stun and insane slows.
