@Riot: Can we have a "Good job!" ping?

Desiderium··236 votes·6,923 views

A ping with just some kind of smiley face or maybe a small decal of chibi/anime version of Lux's face smiling with text that says "good job." Or maybe even no text at all to prevent the ping being used in a toxic manner.

Something to just very quickly provide a bit of encouragement for your team if they do something well, without having to take the time to press enter, type GJ, then enter again. Just for convenience.

If we did this, it may be a good idea to replace the Ctrl ping with it, since Ctrl ping was replaced by the combination of the "Danger" ping and the "Missing" ping. Ctrl ping may still have a couple of uses, but they pale in comparison to Danger and Missing, which fill a lot of the current Ctrl ping's purpose. It may take a day or two to get used to using Ctrl for "Good job" but I am sure the payoff would be worth it.

EDIT: I'm rather proud of having over 200 upvotes and 3k views in less than a day, but the lack of a Red post despite huge thread exposure and recognition (and the topic of a GJ ping being so easy to talk about) is disconcerting.

EDIT #2: If using the pings in a toxic and sarcastic manner is a large issue, the text can be removed from the pings, leaving behind only a smiling chibi anime Lux picture. Another ping can be made with Ezreal, also anime and chibi, but he'd be frowning instead; again with no text. This would make the pings very ambiguous, and significantly reduce the chances of taking them as an insult as compared to the Question Mark ping that everyone typically uses sarcastically. Seeing a smiling Lux or a frowning Ezreal on top of you if you die in lane can be seen more as emotional support rather than an insult, and thus highly lessens the chances of the ping being taken negatively, even if the person that used the ping intended negativity.

bruh

do you know how hard i would spam this on someone after they made a horrible misplay

Don't people already do that with the Question Mark ping?

That didn't stop Riot from putting it in.

Besides, it's not like people Honor other people sarcastically.

There's always going to be assholes on the Internet, but that shouldn't prevent you from implementing a feature that encourages positivity. If you're against that, you're part of the problem and you need to stop.

i'm not saying "don't put it in"

i'm saying arams are going to be a lot more colorful if it gets put in

Believe me, I'd use it sarcastically as well just for the lulz. But, 90% of the time, there's really no reason to not use it the way it's meant. What are you going to do when your teammate actually does something cool? Just not use the "GJ" ping because you're so used to saving it for being a sarcastic jerk? Hell, I troll all the time and I can't see myself not using this feature for primarily being about positive reinforcement.

And actually now that I think of it, if sarcastic use of the GJ ping becomes much of an issue, they could implement a "sad face" ping. Like maybe a frowning chibi Ezreal to go with the GJ Lux. It wouldn't have any text, so it could be used ambiguously (like after a failed teamfight, where it wouldn't be seen condescending at all, and if someone uses it on you after you die, it would seem more like emotional support rather than sarcasm)

honestly, "gj" takes me less than a second to type because i'm so used to doing it in ranked. but for the sake of this example, let's say that i wasn't.

i'd just use the ping the way it was intended to be used (use it once after a good play). i still use the mia ping for lot's of things outside of belittlement because it's a useful ping when you don't have time to type out "yo don't facecheck that" or "this dude's missing" or "hey can you check this buff? i saw their jungler walk there" depending on the context

Positivity is very important in games. A "gj" means very little. Whereas "Great Job!" holds a lot more value. Think about how "lol" is supposed to mean laugh out loud. How many people actually laugh when typing this out? The reality is "LMAO!" probably means their laughing. So having a ping or something in game that could help with keeping morale up in games goes a long way.

It's good to know that you're adding to the toxicity of the community though...

i love getting the moral highground lecture from people based on a single statement that doesn't uphold their extreme-lyte views on toxicity

fyi i've had this account for over 5 years and have never had any actions taken on my account from the results of toxic behavior. thanks for the speech though, dr lyte without-the-phd

I was about to say that's a great idea, but yea that kinda shuts the whole thing down. players would abuse this so bad.

people who want to be toxic will always find ways to do so regardless of if it gets implemented or not. for what it's worth, the op has a good idea

Really? You have no idea of how many people I've seen feeding intentionally and getting 5x honorable opponent.

Pings should be reserved for explicitly gameplay-related purposes. If you want to encourage your teammates a simple "gj" would do.

Honestly, pings need an overhaul. I'd love for both a "good job" ping and a "this is warded/ward here" ping to be added.

And I think it would be reallly nice since theres an MIA ping there should be something to counter it if you used it and then they immediately appeared in lane, that way your team had a better chance of knowing whats going on. Ive had some teammates miss out on some pretty good kills or trades because they thought my oppenents were still MIA

Häßlich2 votes

A standard ping to indicate that they are back in lane should do that. If it doesn't, it just means they aren't watching their map anyway.

I would love a "ward" ping though... Blue for "ward here" and Red for "enemy ward here" (the first being an instruction with the second being a warning)

Mhmm; a "warded" ping would be more.... practical than this

I take it you haven't played Smite. If you don't know there is a "Good Job" Ping and a "Excellent" Ping as well however... People don't use these ping because some one on there team did well. They only use it when they messed up. Another thing is that you can easily type in "NJ" or "GJ" and have the same effect. But, personally I don't want some one to spam me with a "GJ" ping every time I mess up. Another thing to note is that a "Good Job" ping won't carry any real information to your team mates that they don't already know unlike the other pings "MIA, DANGER, OMW, and HELP". I'm sorry if I came off as a bit of a party-pooper but I'm giving you my honest opinion on how this would be used.

Sohleks4 votes

Maybe too modern for me, because I feel this is kinda dumb; it's more authentic if typed.

StealthWarden3 votes

i like it! lets put that into production immediatly!!!! A thumbs up jpg would suffice..or just the words good job or GJ! would be fine. save me from getting snuck up on, forgeting im typing and not casting spells...or worse, blowing flash and everything else just trying to be nice typing.

SupaDupaDave3 votes

I think this would be amazing. One thing I would really like though is an expanded list of pings, things like "It's Warded" or "Placing A Ward" would be nice to have.

Oh, honey, as a support main, I can assure you this won't help. Your adc will always facecheck that bush.

Personally, I'd love to see more "pings" -- however, I don't feel the current ping menu is particularly easy to expand.

A couple possible alternatives:

  1. Let players create ping macros. These are, basically, just pings, that automatically input text when you use them. Let them be accessed via a dropdown menu or assigned hotkey.

For bonus points, let custom macros be easily exported/imported, so players can transfer them between accounts, or download macro sets from sites.

  1. Let players access an extended set of pings via a quick shortcut menu. e.g. v-v-e accesses the "good job" ping.
Orders3 votes

I have a feeling more people will use this function as a sarcastic insult more so than an actual compliment.

Illâoi Evê Siôn3 votes

I like the idea, but wouldn't chat shortcuts be better for something like this, as pings are vital for strategic situations and communication and you don't want to overload the bar. What I'd like was a "Ward" ping. You could warn a jungler with it that the path he is taking is warded, or tell someone to ward dragon or baron.

Prospector Pete2 votes

This would be a good idea, except for the fact that you can just type "GJ" in chat, but with that Lux face it's wurth.

Artty of Alaska2 votes

Yes please! not that typing in "GJ" or "Nice work" or "slick moves" is terribly difficult, i just think this game could use more ways of positively supporting and encouraging teammates.

When there is so little time to build a connection and learn to play as a team, every little thing counts.

SP Dodgecity2 votes

I like it!

Nanuk Pihoqahiak2 votes

Smite actually has a really cool system for this. They have a keybound interface for a variety of responses. Something like VVGG will make your character say Good Game. Would it be abused? Absolutely. But such a system also makes communication seamless.

kfrr2 votes

I've been thinking this for a while. It would be a huge motivational boost to a person if used correctly.

Implement it so I don't have to type 'gj' anymore while I'm microing!

ScrubbyMcFail2 votes

it would help us people who are chat restricted a lot we really don't wanna waste a precious message too type two letters in

Datankious2 votes

I think it is a WONDERFUL idea, it would save time from leaving your mouse alone. yes ppl would spam but ppl spam anyways. it would help the players who dont rage out SIGNIFICANTLY. i know others have had this happen to them, when your teammate just got a kill and you go to type "gj" and get stunned and take major damg or even have to respawn. to just move the mouse to the map and simply just ping would keep you focused on the task ahead.

Phife2 votes

there should be about 5 other types of pings because of chat restrictions, it just isn't fair to have someone on your team not being able to type. and you're fucked if theres 2.

Cheeseyoger2 votes

I like this idea; sometimes someone does makes a good play mid lane or top lane and I can't say anything about it for a while because i'm supporting bot lane and the enemy is making aggressive moves.

I think a nice touch on it might be having your champion's face appear with the ping, showing who the message is from. Not on the mini map, because that would make it confusing where someone is, but on the actual ground it could be cool.

And can we have champion voice packs? And announcer voice packs? And a daily login bonus which, given enough time, gives us RP? And a rotating mode of the day? And all of the other good ideas from SMITE, please? I want to hear Corporate Mundo or Gentlemen Cho'Gath tell someone "Good Job" or go "Woohoo."

Byzanthium2 votes

fun Idea tough I would prefer a "warded" ping. It is slightly harder to convey the message "don't go that way top river bush warded" and then pinging carfull etc. Hell by the time some people take to write warded, they already entered the warded area. That being said I like your idea, we need more pings in general

SetsunaFlame2 votes

I love this idea! Easier than typing it every 4 seconds xD

Desiderium1 votes

Exactly. Making "GJ" into a ping, with a little picture of Lux's face, would make it convenient + encourage positivity.

DazedOnlooker2 votes

YES! A positive ping would be soo nice to have!

Too bad that i may be that one person who gets reported for using it too much (im sorry when i see a team member doing well i'm pretty sure i wouldn't be able to help myself. 4 PINGS MINIMUM PER GOOD DEED) xD

ModJikker2 votes

Good in theory, bad in application. You thought someone spamming ??????? or !!!!!!!!!!! was bad, think again as Lux's face or some other smiley face covers your entire screen. Unfortunately, the trolls will win again

enter g j enter is just as fast

buster kiton1 votes

Would most likely to replace current "missing" ping as the one that's spammed after someone fails/dies.

Desiderium2 votes

If you really think it's going to be used sarcastically THAT often, then you can just remove the text from the ping. Then it just turns into a smiling little anime Lux face.

And then we can add a frowning anime Ezreal face as well.

Then they become completely context-based, and their cuteness and ambiguous meaning when they appear would make it difficult to feel insulted.

buster kiton2 votes

Don't get me wrong, I totally love the idea as any idea that makes the community have a way to show appreciation when someone plays well. All I really want is that we could mute pingspams from certain people just like we can mute them from chat in-game. But that's not the point, great idea and I hope we'll see this in-game someday (along with this is warded-ping).
