We need 10 min surrender not loss forgiven.
Hear me out. The number of front page threads about how riot handles afk teammates is probably greater than any other topic I've seen come up.
Here is the problem though; there isn't a good solution I've seen proposed. Being able to surrender at 10 instead of 20 would be great and SHOULD exist, but it still sucks to have an afk and lose LP as a result. Unfortunately the solution of "just don't lose LP for afk games" is really really bad, and here is why: it rewards bad play rather than skill.
Let's think about some math for a second, who benefits most from having afk losses removed? People who lose more LP than they gain per game, and people who have more than the average number of players afk in their games. The first benefit because not losing is a bigger LP difference for them than not winning, and players who lose more than they gain for the results of one game have an internal ranking lower than the ranking of the account. The game thinks they are less skilled than their rank and we want a system that will reward that (because it impacts players with better mmr less based on the math)? The second group (people with a significantly higher rate of afk teammates) are rewarded because they get safety more often. The problem is that while sometimes this high rate of afk players is variance, often it is influenced by the player such as players who troll or flame their teammates till they leave
I'm all for a better system but currently there aren't many good suggestions so early surrender may be the best we have.
