Is it just me, or is Infinity Edge better against high armor than Last Whisper?

Even when I rush Last Whisper against someone who rushes Frozen Heart and/or Randuin's Omen, it feels like it's worse than getting an Infinity Edge against someone with over 250 armor.

Intended?

Depends on the champ. If you're talking about ADCs, it's just you.

No.

Well, maybe for Master Yi, but otherwise no.

@Do math and it will explain itself.

let's do the math IE has 80 AD FH has 100 armor let's assume that for whatever reason you have no base AD and they have no base armor assuming you crit 1/4 attacks, you'd do 200+80+80+80 (440) damage before mitigation and it'd be reduced to 220 by FH

LW has 40 AD and ignores 35% of their armor 4 attacks would do 160 damage before mitigation and it'd be reduced to 97 damage (rounded up)

your acting as if someone can't crit if they get last whisper. Most people would only go whisper first if they went like attack speed (that has crit with it)

the math was done only using the 3 items. base AD, base armor, runes, masteries, and other items were not taken into consideration. forgot about the 250 armor mentioned above.

I thought that was the point. OP said that it feels like he's doing less damage with LW compared to IE even against high armor targets.

And yes, in all realistic scenarios (unrealistic include you having 800 AD and enemy having 2000 armor) IE will win against LW (due to how both items work - IE critical chance and passive means that you are gaining 37,5% (without any additional critical chance) in your dps from auto attacks - which is hard to obtain with LW, as its passive will usually increase your physical damage output by around 15-25% (which is high, but not as high as IE for AA)) as far as auto attacks are concerned. For abilities it will be as expected, with LW winning over IE if enemy have high armor.

Also... Even if we assume that IE or LW were bought on top of another crit chance item - it will only work in IE favor, as its passive works better the more crit chance you have (so, if you buy 50% crit without IE - your average DPS from AA will increase by 50% (duh), but if you do the same with IE it will increase by 75%).

oh god id hope so, the difference is 1500g between the two. That'd be like asking "why do i do more damage when i get a hat over 2 dorans rings?"

when do math, please consider to add BF sword for LW,

IE should be a lot better than LW, since it's 3800g vs. 2300g.

The fair comparison would probably be LW+BFSword vs. IE, or LW+Brutalizer vs. IE, since then you're spending about the same amount of money. Or maybe LW vs. BFSword+Pickaxe or BFSword+Cloak.

Let's assume you have 50AD and a 1.0AS to start.

With an IE, you have:

130AD, 25% crit, crits do +150% damage. So every 4 attacks you'd do (130 + 130 + 130 + 130 * 2.5) = 715 damage, then mitigated by armor. Of course the damage is unpredictable, and this is the average result.

With an LW+BFSword you have:

140AD, so in 4 attacks you do: 140 + 140 + 140 + 140 = 560 damage, then mitigated by 35% less armor.

With an LW+Brutalizer you have:

115AD, so in 4 attacks you do: 115 + 115 + 115 + 115 = 460 damage, with 35% less armor and then -10 armor on top of that. (You also have 10% CDR that I'm not taking into account in any way here.)

Let's look at how these options do as your opponent's armor varies.

With 50 armor (33% reduction):

IE does 715 damage, reduced by 33% to 480. LW+BFSword does 560 damage, but reduces effective armor to 32.5 (~25% reduction), so you do about 420 damage. LW+Brutalizer does 460 damage, but reduces effective armor to 22.5 (~20% reduction), so you do about 370 damage.

With 100 armor (50% reduction):

IE do es 715 damage, reduced by 50% to about 360. LW+BFSword does 560 damage, but reduces armor to 65 (~40% reduction), so you do about 336 damage. LF+Brutalizer does 460 damage, but reduces effective armor to 55 (~35% reduction), so you do about 299 damage.

With 200 armor (67% reduction):

IE does 715 damage, reduced by 67% to about 235. LW+BFSword does 560 damage, but reduces effective armor to 130 (~57% reduction), so you do about 240 damage. LW+Brutalizer does 460 damage, but reduces effective armor to 120 (~55% reduction), so you do about 207 damage.

With 300 armor (75% reduction):

IE does 715 damage, reduced by 75% to about 180. LW+BFSword does 560 damage, but reduces effective armor to 195 (~66% reduction), so you do about 190 damage. LW+Brutalizer does 460 damage, but reduces effective armor to 185 (~65% reduction), so you do about 161 damage.

TLDR:

Early on, LW+BFSword breaks even with IE at about 200 armor on the target given those base stats.

However, with the LW you're not reliant on RNG. If you don't crit in a sequence of attacks, you're doing less damage with IE. Also LW/Brutalizer benefit physical damage skills and crit usually doesn't.
