Malzahar thing because my computer broke and I am off work for 3 boring days.

I have nothing to do till my new rig gets here so might as well.

http://st.elohell.net/public/chill/7e266ee96f98747e2d6fc99edb0d12e8.jpg AH MALZAHAR! BUDDY! My favorite champion in the game for 3 seasons before the rework. I LOVE Malzahar. Had I not taken a break from S5-MYMU he would likely have more mastery points than Shyvana. As he has about one third of my total LoL games played on him.

Sadly, he was problematic. I am NOT in denial. Malz was a bad design, people only didn't know it because he was what we called a 'sleeper'. People didn't play him so they didn't know how unfun Malzahar was to fight. So I was excited when Riot was going to renew him. It is actually why I returned to LoL. Boy was I disappointed... And yes, I gave him a try, 20K additional mastery points(onto what I already had in S5 before my break) of a try. He is awful now. And Meddler, you know I love you. You gave me the Shyvana of my dreams, I think you do try to make the game better, but holy fuck please have somebody on the design team re-rework this champion. And in fact, I will tell you what I think you should do.

#My Ideal Malzahar Rework That Is Actually Fair For His Enemies I Think.

Passive: When Malzahar casts a spell he gains a stack, on his fourth stack a Voidling will be birthed forth into the world. Voidlings are birthed near the final spell cast(restoring the skill of blocking skill shots with Voidlings but making that use up a spell and requiring stacks now). Voidlings will be tankier than the current ones, deal physical damage like the old ones, scale with AP and AD like the old ones, and will have very low base damage to be reliant on scalings so he isn't good support. They last longer like the old ones, enrage like the old ones. Voidlings will attack targets afflicted with Malefic Visions and Nether Grasp.

I found this old passive to take far more skill in resource management to get optimal damage out of. I'd also prefer Voidlings not taking up a spell slot. So boom. Essentially, just revert his passive.

Q: Call of the Void I would increase the impact delay on this spell closer to the original, we will help Malzahar out with this later in his kit. Otherwise it should remain mostly the same. Decent base damage, GREAT scalings, silences, skillshot. I would aim for 80/110/140/170/200+80%AP to compensate lowered damage on his ult and ramping damage on his Visions. This spell has no major issues. Done.

Now we get to the stuff that makes Malzahar Toxic.

W: Null Zone In this new version of Null Zone. Malzahar will form a Voidic Sphere, after .75 seconds the sphere will collapse the world around it into a howling, screaming, dark, Null Zone. The collapse will slow enemies caught in it by 10/15/20/25/30% for 1.5 seconds and deal 3/4/5/6/7%(+1% per 50 AP) of the target's maximum HP as magic damage. Null Zone will persist for 4 seconds dealing 1%(+.25% per 50AP) current HP as magic damage per second(On half second tick rate).

Null Zone will have a delay, this allows it to be dodge before the initial damage similar to Cho'Gath's Q. The damage scaling is intentionally high to encourage building AP instead of relying on base damage. 7% max HP vs a squishy or tank doesn't mean much on a medium Cooldown spell. But with a fairly standard 600AP pure mage build this ability could deal 12% max HP damage on the scaling alone, plus an additional 4% current per second after that. The initial damage and slow gives Malzahar some reliable medium burst and sticking power. Which will be needed for the next spell. The DoT is current HP to prevent the spell from hard countering tanks too much. Also since the spell does magic damage, unlike Fiora or Vayne, it can be properly countered by resistances.

E: Malefic Visions Dark visions of the void and it's terrors close in on Malzahar's enemy. Over the next three seconds the target will receive magic damage equal to 50/70/90/110/130+60%AP(+1%AP per half second tick) of Malzahar's AP. Spell ticks, Basic Attacks and Voidling attacks refresh 1 second of the duration, with his Q refreshing the entire 3 seconds. Basic attacks and Voidling attacks vs afflicted targets restore 1/2/3/4/5 mana, 5X vs champions. When Malefic Visions' target dies, it will jump to a nearby enemy losing it's bonus damage stacks.

Probably the second most problematic spell in his kit after his ult. My hope with this design is that it will start with mediocre damage if you just drop it and leave it, forcing you to stick on the enemy. Also since the damage amp is lost when it jumps you cannot drop it on a front minion, kill the entire wave then have it jump on the enemy for massive damage. To get full damage you must interact with the enemy directly. Same for the mana restoring, which is very minimal vs minions but increased on champions. Again it has cruddy base damage and if you keep it up long enough incredible scaling. Note that only the scaling increases and not the base damage.

R: Nether Grasp Malzahar will throw a Voidic pulse down a long and narrow cone to acquire a target. If it strikes an enemy champion Malzahar will spew the void upon them for 1.5/2/2.5 seconds, suppressing them as they take 150/200/250+80/90/100%AP as magic damage over it's duration.

Ult damage is down from old Malzahar. His damage during his ult will come from his other spells and the refreshing of Malefic Visions. It still has high scaling but not as high as original Malz, and the base damage is way down so he can be a mid laner and not a support. Ult can now be dodged, or body blocked by tanks, making it far more fair. Since the sheer damage it deals is down it is nearly worthless if he lands nothing else, no more Flash R to win. The duration of the suppression has been switched to scale with level, so it isn't so overly devastating with it's kill power early game, allowing him to have more power budgeted into other parts of his kit. But still ramps up to be useful in late game team fights and skirmishes.

#ALL NUMBERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! Numbers are just guestimates based on old Malz with some tuning. I leave it to Rito and the community to decide exactly what number tuning should look like. When judging this design I would prefer if people focused on just that, the design. The numbers are only there to give the idea that I would prefer a high scaling, low base damage setup.

#Summary Malzahar would go from extremely binary to having 3 skill shots, skill shot blocking Voidlings, his E will require interaction to get it's comparable old damage, he gains a slow to compensate the numbers of skill shots he now has. He loses the toxic Banshees Veil passive that makes non-interactive champion even more non-interactive. He would have high scalings and low base damage meaning building pure AP on him is ideal over support. He will retain tank busting DPS mage power without it being overbearing especially early in a fight. He will be able to 100-0 squishies but only with time and effort. He cannot just wall off in lane and never interact due to the reduction in his mana return unless attacking enemy champions. Since his ult skillshot starts at point blank range he will still be good vs assassins, but not overbearingly point and click to 100-0. His numbers shown here may be off, again, I am not the best with number tuning.

Thank you for reading. With the best intentions - Mira Arya Enthe.

Wait a bloody minute. Someone who proposes a rework that tackles the problematic aspects rather than making them even more prominent?

Blasphemous.

Melledoneus43 votes

It needs more passives. 3 more at least. Certainly(T).

Malicious Metal29 votes

Nah, I got a better idea!

let's link his abilities to a ~~spirit ~~void ~~sword ~~dagger he has to carry around the rift! That sounds fun and interesting!

TyrekGoldenspear3 votes

Now now, let's not step on Shen's toes. :^)

Spice POWAH2 votes

Too late, the resident Shen main already ulted in.

Melledoneus20 votes

I just had a better idea. Let's name him to the Lord of Death Darkness and force him to be a bot lane carry.

kile1478 votes

This would all be really funny if it didn't hurt so much.

PeponiPoro1 votes

I don't know that just targeting CertainlyT with this comment is accurate. Many others on the rework and champion development teams would agree with more passives. :P (I also kind of like the guy and think he got a bad reputation because of Morde. Not a completely unfounded reputation, as it was a hella out there rework, but he's done good work on other champs like Caitlyn.)

I was making joke. Not making serious.

Seems Legit. However we need one huge change

Malefic Visions ---> Space Aids

I like it. Now if only Riot would comment on this or their intentions for Malzahar changes in the future.

Kinda feels like they're scared to even say anything related to malz else they'll recieve to much salt to handle.

The Yetii Rider6 votes

Can't assess the value of the passive without cooldowns on the other abilities.

Ralanr5 votes

I personally really don't like his old W ult combo which seems possible in your rework as it provided damage from two scaling abilities rather than one we have now.

That was my main gripe with Malz. I could even stand AD malz (well not really, but in comparison to his pool combo I would take the tower termite minions any day).

Mira Arya Enthe13 votes

Correct, if he lands a delayed AoE and a line skillshot he gets two spells dealing damage. I don't see the problem with this. That would be like saying Brand is a problem because if he lands his stun he can then pillar you. He is a mage, he has multiple, scaling, damaging abilities. Plus now, as a tank player, you can body block Malzahar's ultimate for your team. Your ADC/Mage/Assassins will love you and now wreak havoc since his ult will have counterplay.

Ralanr4 votes

True.

Really there are a lot of things in this game that annoy me but are actually fine for the game. It feels like people assume I think something is unhealthy when it annoys me.

Mira Arya Enthe5 votes

Fair enough. I mean Shen's AA shield is perfectly fair but pisses me off. Since it counters Shyvana and Ashe.

kile1475 votes

His ult has plenty of counterplay already. Tanks don't need to body block because they just need to CC him while he sits there suppressing his target. The counterplay is that he CC's himself as well as his target so any hard CC (which a tank should have) can interrupt it easily.

TyrekGoldenspear5 votes

Hey you're back!

I like your idea for a rework as well.

Mira Arya Enthe4 votes

Not entirely. In my leaving post on GD I noted I would likely still post champion reworks and ideas if they came to me. My computer is broken :< and I was given several days off work. I am use to working 50-70 hours a week so I didn't know what to do with myself.

I wanted to comment on Malz back when he was a hot topic. But decided to wait until the spam posts about him blew over.

TyrekGoldenspear5 votes

That makes sense.

However in your GD farewell you mentioned one reason of you leaving was becuase your mission was accomplished--you got Shyv the attention she deserved and got her a pretty decent rework.

Maybe you can do the same for Malz? We can start calling you Void Lady instead of Dragon Lady. :3

As soon as they release a Mirzahar skin or make a female human void champion like they promised in 2011

For the love of all that is holy, yes. Please. He became so voidling dependent that all his power was suctioned off and he was reduce to "LOL INFINITE VOIDLING SPAM!" or "LOL IM ULTING U" instead of kite, positioning, etc., anti-dive/assassin monster he used to be. His new passive is "LOL U TIKLD ME O FU--- IMDED".

Lowered CDs so he has no "oomf" to try to make him more like Ryze and make voidlings "prominent" (even though they are were early game monsters when timed correctly)...

Uhgahgargh. Yes pls.

Edit: Literally my favorite champion until rework. I want to cosplay as him as I have the skintone/body/hair to match. He was what carried me into Plat until...the rework...

...then I legit barely played .... ...then stopped playing altogether.

I found this old passive to take far more skill in resource management to get optimal damage out of. I'd also prefer Voidlings not taking up a spell slot. So boom. Essentially, just revert his passive.

A thousand times this.

Also, it's interesting how all of his problems could realistically be solved with a few # adjustments and changes to his W and R, but riot instead went through with a shoddy rework which introduced as many problems as it solve, all the while making the champion even less defined as his respective class. SMH

Oh and more importantly, this doesn't completely destroy one of his play styles, while muddying the water for the other. Hey, if they do something like this, i might actually start playing my AD malz one trick smurf again.

Kukan Seishin4 votes

Actually a good idea, I would like to see this implemented.

Voidzilla4 votes

Interesting Malzahar rework.

I did enjoy playing the good 'ol Prophet more often than not, and I'll admit I initially loved his Void Swarm ability on his rework. Watching the enemy be torn apart by a mass of Voidlings was pretty funny. However, as everything settled in, I now see the deep, deep flaws in that ability, both in terms of Malzahar's gameplay and lore. I would like to see Riot revert that cheap-ass innate Void Shift currently had and put his Voidlings back on his passive. It was a great and very noticeable way to differentiate decent Malzahars from great Malzahars.

I think it's very intriguing to have Malefic Visions actually have its damage ramp up the more Malz focuses on his target. It cements his secondary role as an assassin better and would require more thought than just plopping it onto the nearest target & hoping it'll bounce around. Plus, it sounds like it'd be easier to balance as well.

The ult though I feel should stay the same. Adjust the damage, adjust the cooldown, adjust the range, make it easier to interrupt, and/or make it so it has to be chained with his other abilities to get the most effect. However, with mobility becoming so prominent nowadays I feel a single-targeted lockdown, at least on an ult, helps leverage that out. Skillshots are indeed more oriented towards skill, but I don't think that every ability in the game needs to be like that. Malzahar has been a sort of anti-assassin in mid, with great waveclear and the ability to seriously punish foes that try to dive him too deep, and I think he should keep good reliability on at least one spell since all the rest can get crazy to have to micro-manage simultaneously.

Other than turning the ult into a skillshot, I think these are all great and intriguing ideas worth exploring. Hopefully a Rioter sees this and takes these into consideration if they ever re-rework Malzahar. Nicely written.

How long did it take you to come up with these ideas?

I Like Things 3 votes

Read the whole thing and as a massive fan of Malzahar since season 2 I must say ... well done.

I especially like your changes to W/E/R - I feel as if this were implemented we'd get a really rewarding version of Malzahar, both to play as and to play against.

My up vote, have it.

warmcorntortilla3 votes

The best, best, best part is the ult. Ever since I saw the Warwick rework I realized that there are actually ways to have suppressions that don't feel like total bullshit. This is a really good rework, another part I like a lot is it gives him back decision making and lane interaction! He feels not only really bad to play against, but also like, boring and very binary to play as. This gives back so much skill expression that was taken away from him.

I'm not sure about the W, since I actually liked the old one just fine. A little boring, but seeing as Ryalai's/Liandries is so good with his E (and I can't imagine that changing with this iteration of him, especially since he'll have a less-reliable ult and will need to be a little tanky) a slow on his W is a little redundant, I think? Just my take, but overall still way, way better than what he currently is.

Also secret buff: give back old, sexy void daddy splash and get rid of creepy, broken hands void hobo splash.

RIOT!

JUST..... DO IT!

Bladerunner77773 votes

This sounds like a terrible idea, not gonna lie.

Malzahar would be completely unreliable/borderline useless anywhere above Silver

"MAKE IT A SKILL SHOT. BALANCED!" is an idiotic philosophy. Malzahar's single party trick is his reliable guaranteed lockdown on ult. If that is removed then that's not Malzahar anymore. "Slows to help land skillshots" does not equal reliability, that just means your champion isn't completely unplayable in the league of mobility.

I find it funny that nobody remembers that old Malzahar was just as passive and boring as new Malzahar, except now he has tweaks to be viable at a high level and that always seems to piss off the scrubby "malz mains"

Also:

I am quitting the boards, goodbye friends~

?

Yes I'm toxic

deadlychuck8 votes

Just because he'd be useless in your hands at "anywhere above Silver" doesn't mean the champion would be.

"MAKE IT A SKILL SHOT. BALANCED!"

Warwick seems to have no problem with it.

LadyRenly2 votes

I thought you quit :o

ZyniX2 votes

Really nice rework post. Honestly though I'd play love to play old malzahar even if they reverted everything but his ult and just removed it from the game. I miss the aura of power he used to have. Very slow and immobile but would wreck face if you got into range, like a juggernaut I suppose. Now all of his scaling are utter crap and the skill of using the voidling passive was removed and replaced with a dependency on the voidlings which is the opposite direction they should have taken him imo.

Votable Jester2 votes

This rework idea mostly seems good, but I have one issue with your numbers on his ult (I know they're subject to change, but I don't think you thought of this).

With the duration increasing at each rank, the scaling is not increasing enough to compensate. What I mean is that the dps actually drops from one rank to the next.

Rank1: Base damage = 150/1.5 = 100 dps. Scaling damage = 80%/1.5 = 0.53333% AP per second. Rank2: Base damage = 200/2 = 100 dps. Scaling damage = 90%/2 = 45% AP per second. Rank3: Base damage = 250/2.5 = 100 dps. Scaling damage = 100%/2.5 = 40% AP per second.

While the base dps remains the same, the scaling drops significantly. This is important because in later fights, you'll often be interrupted or have to cancel. Thus if you cancel within 1.5 seconds of starting, you would have done more damage with the Rank 1 ult than the Rank 3.

I think they should at least have the same dps if you want the duration to increase with rank.

Looknook2 votes

I miss old Malzahar, he was the one champ I would always fall back on in Midlane when I didn't really care. I would love to see Riot rework Malzahar for real and do it justice and I believe your ideas are really good for the most part.

One of the bigger issues I have is the mana refund system you thought of. While it would promote Malzahar to interact in lane, it kinda discourages Malz to build much AP if he wants to be able to waveclear for long, it could also encourage him to just place it on enemy minions to just get mana. With mana renewal on its spread there is a certain skill in knowing when and how to help it advance through a minion wave. Then later in the game with higher AP when he is just murdering minions instantly, you still get mana. I like that Malz is one of the few champs that can effectively wave clear a lane while being no where near it.

If Malzahar was like this, I'd actually play him. +1

So old malz...

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

Really not a fan of your passive changes simply because, my biggest issue with current Malz's voidlings is that it's nigh impossible to keep them from spawning. I was playing Nunu in Ascension yesterday and the enemy team had a Malz, I could press Q on one and instantly eat it when in range and it would STILL spawn another voidling. The counterplay of "just kill his voidlings" doesn't exist in any real world scenarios, they spawn too fast to deal with quickly and if you spend all your time attacking them then you're not attacking enemy champions which means you'll lose a fight worse than if you just tank them.

My point is, unless you change how quickly they spawn, they shouldn't be tankier.

Mira Arya Enthe4 votes

Original voidlings did not spawn additional voidlings.
