The damage nerfs to edge of night are a mistake - that's not what people complain about.

People complain about the active spellshield, with understandable reason. And I am not against any nerfs you plan to make to that.

What I am against, is going overboard and nerfing unnecessary aspects of EoN, damaging the core role it plays for assassins in the process.

Let's establish a few facts:

  1. EoN is no different than Maw before it. Maw use to be the third flat armorpen item. It gave you a tad less damage but more magic resist. It also had an active that would screw over any magic based enemy you attacked. EoN's active is situationally weaker than Maw's passive, but situationally stronger, so you can't really say one is flat out better unless you get into the fact that EoN has a much lower cooldown (which they are planning to take away). However, EoN should rightly have more damage than the old Maw because it offers less magic resist, and it's been designed from the ground up as an assassin item, and assassins need extra damage on their base items more than they need resists. You're no good to anyone if the damage shaved off your items means the enemy APC/ADC is left alive at a sliver of health while you blow up from the return fire of their team.

  2. With regards to assassin itemization, you must build all three armorpen items to do your job. There is no "well, I only need one flat armorpen item, so let me pick the one that fits my flavor. Do I want speed, damage, or defense?" Because even with all three, at level 18, with max lethality runes and masteries, you will not be able to negate the base armor of 90% of players. For AD champions that live or die by their ability to burst squishy targets, giving up even one armorpen item can be fatal to your ability to be relevant and effective. The different characteristics will determine which lethality item you choose to buy first or second, but it won't change the fact that you still need to buy all three.

  3. People who complain about EoN are really only complaining about the spellshield. It's damage and lethality is never the problem. Deal with the spellshield and all the complaints disappear.

  4. ADCs who build EoN, but aren't going full lethality, aren't buying EoN because it gives them AD and MR together. They are buying it because it gives them a spellshield without having to invest in a pure defensive item. Deal with the spellshield and you drastically reduce the desire of them to build this item if you aren't going lethality build.

  5. Anyone who complaints about an item having both AD and MR on it doesn't understand how itemization has been designed. There's a reason the old arpen Maw existed, and it's the same reason EoN exists. Mages have half a dozen items that give high AP along with health and armor. Their items also come with a range of defensive utility like slows, stasis, or a dash. Mage items are designed to counter assassins while still allowing them to do their job of delivering high burst damage to squishier targets. But assassins, like ADCs, have no real choices for defense if they want to be effective at their job. But ADCs have range and the expectation of being protected while assassins must dive into melee. Because of this, if a mage itemizes hybrid defense/AP items, they will be able to shrug off any AD assassin while still having enough damage to kill the defenseless assassin. Since the assassin's job is to kill the ADC or APC, this can be a big problem for assassins. Something like Maw/EoN helps even out the disparity, because assassins don't have viable bruiser items they can build before building lethality (And Riot nerfed black cleaver specifically so ADC/assassins would stop building it, even if they were building it late game). It is actually mages who have the itemization advantage, if they choose to take advantage of it. Most build glass cannon max damage, even if it isn't working for them, and aren't smart enough to realize they have alternatives.

Given those facts, it is completely unreasonable to nerf EoN's damage down to 55 as planned, when it's active is getting halfed in effectiveness and it still has less magic resist than the old arpen Maw. You cannot treat it as a defensive bruiser item when it isn't. It's an offensive item that gives up mobility or extra damage/trap detection in exchange for AP survivability.

If you are playing an AD assassin, every bit or damage matters. Especially on a champion that is more binary in their effectiveness like Talon. Either you can kill your target in a burst or you can't, and the consequences of not killing them can be game losing if you get CC'd and blown up in the process. Losing 5 lethality on ghostblade hurt. Losing 10 AD on EoN from it's original will hurt more. I'd rather give up some defense on EoN to retain the damage, because damage is what assassins live or die by. But, as I already pointed out, because of the way itemization works, it's not even a problem for an assassin to have both. MR combined with high AD was never what people were up in arms about - the spellshield is.

Riot has made a mistake. They have stated the problem with EoN is it's active spellshield. I agree with those changes.

Yet they nerf it's damage. Why? That was never the problem.

The reason nerfing it is a problem is because, as far as assassin itemization goes, there's no such thing as defensive builds. There's no trading off lethality for defense. Every assassin will have to build all three lethality items regardless of what their distribution of defense/offense looks like. They don't have the luxury of picking and choosing just one or two of them and still being effective late game.

As a result, nerfing EoN's damage is just a strait nerf to assassin damage, pretending that assassins actually have itemization choice in this regard. It's also completely unnecessary after all the hits they've taken to lethality and mastery damage in the past two patches.

They should have just nerfed the spellshield and then waited to see if nerfing the damage was still called for.
