I would rather watch lane swaps in LCS than deal with this
I understand the original argument that was made against "boring" LCS games, where professionals were constantly lane swapping in their matches, but you know what's even more boring than being a league spectator that sees the same strategies repeated over and over again? Being a league player and seeing the exact same strategy play out in 90% of your solo q games.
I watch professional matches each week, but I easily play 3x - 4x that amount of games each week. if not more. And I imagine most of the player-base does as well. As an LCS spectator, I'm willing to put up with some predictability in the matches I watch, if it means that I get more variance in the matches I'm playing in.
When a game has regular, predictable curves of tension, it quickly becomes stale and boring - and the ensuing outcomes feel arbitrary. I don't know how many times my ADC has generated a good CS lead and I thought to myself, "our lane is going great," only to see a 4 man play into bottom before the 15 minute mark. The dozens of decisions we made over 10 minutes to generate that advantage is essentially nullified as the gold is just going to swing to whatever team crashed into bot tower first.
This wasn't always a problem. My favorite early ward to place was behind the dragon pit, so the team could sniff out and reposition in response to any southward roams from the mid laner - but nowadays, vision is completely strangled out in the early game. Even a jungler with a supportive, vision based playstyle can't help there anymore, thanks to the removal of Tracker's Knife (again, for the LCS lolz).
But still, it feels like every mid-game of league is the exact same story:
- 4 man into bot tower
- Take dragon
- Take more towers as 5 (because the opposing ADC is too weak to team fight)
- Take control of enemy jungle
- Force enemy to face check baron, or just get it for free
I've been playing this game for 5 years, and not once has my laning performance ever felt so inconsequential. Not once has the game felt completely decided before the 15 minute mark. It doesn't feel remotely as strategic as it used to be, and I'm just really tired of it, because I love the shit out of this game, and I want to keep enjoying it for as long as I can play - but this is just a sad state that it's in right now.
I know that changes are made to the game to make LCS more spectator-friendly, but honestly, what's the point if the actual game itself isn't any fun to play? Most of the people in those seats are players, not pure spectators - and I think it's time that the game's design reflected that again.
