Lux vs Diana. What the heck is Lux supposed to do against her in lane?

darkdill··3 votes·9,144 views

Diana's not exactly the most vulnerable to poke attacks (Pale Cascade will generally absorb Lux's potshots), and when Lux comes in to CS, she takes a load of damage from Diana's Q. You can't quite push her out of lane pre-6, and once Diana hits level 6, she'll start tower-diving you without any consequences, so you can't just turret-hug and farm under there. Even if you snare her and Flash away, she'll still catch up to you with Lunar Rushes because you'll have been slowed by Moonfall.

Any thoughts? Or is this one of those "you got countered" matchups?

I didn't lose the game, but the lane was brutal. She Q's you once after level 6, you're dead even if you Flash away from her.

When she dashes. Press Q W E R

You shouldn't really be in range for Qing... If she dives you she's totally boned cos you can point blank Q-E-R-Ignite with tower helping out… Honestly this matchup is yours to lose more than hers to win

It's the classic mage vs assassins match up. Diana only has one ranged ability whereas you have three (damaging) abilities. Just poke her as much as you can while getting CS, try and predict her Q's as well so you can shield or ideally dodge it. Even if you push the wave it's fine (as long as you're wary of ganks) because Diana will definitely have problems killing minions under tower and have to burn her mana to ensure CS. Build Athene's so you have MR and can spam your abilities more.

You just want to keep her at bay, not allowing her to all in you, while you poke her down and keep the wave on her side. If she ever does manage to get to you, root her and make distance while throwing poke back; once Diana's throws everything out, she doesn't have much else so even auto attacking is useful (make sure to make use of those passive procs).

Sadly, +25 MR on a squishy like Lux results in barely any damage reduction, such that it's pretty much ignored.

Also, when Diana hits level 6, she can hover behind your minions and zone you away from them pretty easily. If you even try to go in to launch your E, she'll throw Q.

The MR does make a minor difference though, it's your best option so you can spam abilities while still having some defensive. Build anything else and you're gonna be squishy and it will most likely cost too much.

About level 6. If you know Diana will try and Q, predict it and dodge it (boots will help with this), or even better try and bait it out. When Diana's Q is on CD, her burst is hit hard because she doesn't get Q damage and she can only get one dash off at a cost. By not even walking up to Diana, you're just letting her zone you freely without having to expend any mana or CS, while you are hugely denied.

Like others are saying, abuse her pre 6. Throw out lots of poke (auto attacks included). If you're able to net a kill off her pre 6, you'll have an easier time post 6 and from there try to snowball that lead.

Note: Diana's Q has a windup time, once you see her start, back up or move to the other side (the opposite side of the crescent).

Sadly, +25 MR on a squishy like Lux results in barely any damage reduction, such that it's pretty much ignored.

30 MR is approximately 23% magic damage resistance, whereas 55 MR is a tiny bit above 35% magic damage resistance.

If you have 600 health in the former case, you die after 780 magic damage; in the latter case, you die after 930 damage. It's an effective +150 HP against magic damage.

If you have more HP, then the MR is going to grant even more effective HP.

And Lux has about 600 base HP at level 3.

Lux's rank 1 W, before AP, grants 80 effective HP on the shield, which effectively resists up to 104 damage with 30 MR, and up to 124 with 55 MR.

At level 6, she has 790 base HP. 30 MR can survive 1027 magic damage, while 55 MR can survive ~1225 magic damage, nearly +200 effective HP to magic damage.

I'm not saying buying MR early is the answer to all of your problems, but I am saying that people underestimate early resistances a lot. Unless you have more than 50 Armor/MR early-game, it's usually worth it if your opponent is heavily focused on a certain damage type.

Lol, no problem, Diana can buy Abyssal. :)

Yes, building defense can go both ways. Difference is that Lux is a utility mage, so delaying her damage output isn't nearly as much of a detriment as it could be for Diana.

Diana gets destroyed pre 6... After 6 you farm from distance.

Kill her?

Amelie3 votes

If Diana isn't hiding behind minions, she's a lot easier to snare and combo, or simply poke with E. If Diana uses shield to block harass, her mana will drop dramatically.

Lux E outranges Diana Q... you should be able to safely farm or harass if you stay away from her.

Durzaka2 votes

The same thing Lux does against any Assassin.

Get absolutely destroyed.

The only thing you can do is call for jungler ganks, or try and roam bot for kills there.

You have until lvl 6 to shut Diana down as Lux, otherwise she can straight up jump on you any time you get in range for her to land a Q.

Leeerzeichen2 votes

You should easy outdamage her pre 6. Everytime Diana wants to farm, you have to hit her with e/q + aa. She can't really trade back, so you can go really aggressive as long as you stay out of her e range. You should be able to completely force her out of lane and eventually kill her. After lvl 6 simply STAY OUT OF RANGE and avoid her q. If she manages to jump on you, q her midair and use w, depending on her lvl/items you can kill her with aa + e + ult + aa. And you can hug your turret, because Diana can't dive you without consequences, as long as you are not low life and she has no zhonyas.

........ Diana is melee

just poke her with your E that has an unholy long range, you zone her out, deny farm and everything.

Diana can't do squat until lvl6, but with your E you are always at a safe distance from it. if by for some unknown reason, she manages to get close to you, just cast Q, get some distance and keep pressing E

darkdill2 votes

Her Q hurts, and it's fairly easy for her to hit you with it. And as for poking with your E, her shield will make that poke meaningless if you don't also proc Lux's passive (which involves getting too close and getting Q'd by Diana).

If Diana pops her shield to negate your damage, it doesn't mean you failed. That means she wasted mana, keep forcing her to do that and eventually she won't be able to do it no more. You'll come out ontop if you have mana potion or a mana regen item.

Leaning phase isn't about all inning someone and killing them. It's about wittling them down and denying them everything you can. So even if you manage to drop her mana bar defensively, it's still worth it.

On a side note, Diana's shield doesn't pop until one of her orbs hits an enemy, keep that in mind.

lux also has a shield. if she tried to get close to you, just Q her

Diana is suppose to be strong. She is a ap melee bruiser and outscales almost all mages. That is because she is suppose to deal consistent magic damage like a riven would deal physical damage. What more unique about her is that she can also choose between burst or sustain damage.

Example, combo q r w e passive r deals burst

combo q r w e passive q r r passive deals sustain damage.

There is not much you can do except use more abilities to do more damage than her shield absorbs.

Most Dianas I see just suck. I actually was in a game yesterday where this happened and lux destroyed her.

Diana's Lunar Rush is a dash not a teleport, and since she will be trying to use it immediately after hitting you with Crescent Strike for the reset, you can predict it and Q to root her on the way if you're quick and didn't put a bunch of enemy minions between you and her.

Anomander1 votes

Pretty much this as it will also prevent resets if your good.

Whenever I can't deal with my laner, either because they're super threatening (Most assassins), or they're super hard to kill (old morde and Cho'Gath) I gank bottom lane and get them snowballing. I usually lose my turret for doing this a lot, but I think it's the best course of action.

Lugg1 votes

You have to punish her hard pre-6. Once she gets 6 and is anywhere close to even with you, you lose.

If it's any consolation, Diana wrecks pretty much anyone right now.

Well I know SOMEONE's advice that I won't be taking.

There are just times where you just can't win in terms of champ versus champs. Common advice to beating counters are

  1. Don't play into it.
  2. Have 99% accurate on all your skill shot.
  3. Learn your counter's champion, their CD, their abilities, their attack damage, attack speed, movement speed, all per level. Everything is crucial.

It must be terrible that a melee champion is actually able to reach and do damage to Lux.

stealthfox941 votes

Diana is super weak and vulnerable to poke pre 6. And even after 6 Lux should still be able to out poke her and snare her if she dashes to her. Honestly think Lux should win this matchup.
