Kalista Oathsworn selection

I'm still fairly new to this game, so I'm hoping for experienced players' opinions on a recent match I played.

I'm a support main, and lately I favor tanky supports, especially Nautilus. My favorite ADC to play alongside is Kalista, because her ult is simply hilarious to me. I'll often state as much when playing a normal, saying something like "Sweet, Kali ADC! Feel free to throw my fat ass all over the place!".

So, when my ADC was a Kalista yesterday, I was excited. I was confused, however, when she opted to bind our jungle Volibear instead of me. Assuming it was a mistake, I spoke up, only for her to say "working as intended". Okay then.

So, help me out here: Are there any realistic circumstances in which a Kalista doesn't bind her support? As far as I can tell, she gave up huge passive bonuses, as well as a lot of availability of her ultimate. We went on to win, but Kali underperformed the entire game, especially during laning. Being a newbie, I'm not sure if I'm missing a tactical decision here, or if the Kali was just kinda bad.

Hah, thanks. The possibility that I was missing major game knowledge kinda tilted me.

That Kali misjudged the situation in a major way. The only time you'd bind the jungler is when your support is some squishy mage that has no business being tossed at the enemy. The only thing I can think of is that the Kali and Voli were duo and on Skype or something.

What makes it even worse is that you're one of the rare people that want to be soulbound. Back when Kali as on the PBE, she would toss the spear into the ground and you'd have to click on it to become her oathsworn. She still uses the animation for it.

No one clicked on that spear.

Thanks for the input! Amusingly, the Voli was my roommate and was sitting across from me, so no, they weren't Skype buddies or anything. He was as confused as I was.

Then clearly your roommate is a double agent!

You know what to do...

Nautilus item 3147 Volibear

What do you even call a double agent who is secretly working for somebody supposedly on your team already? A step-agent? A double-agent once removed?

So much this "> ...The only thing I can think of is that the Kali and Voli were duo and on Skype or something."

Even then it's still better to bind the squishy support over the jungler. Most mages may be worse for using fates call offensively but you can still use it to save them when they get caught out (which is more likely to result in death as opposed to a tanky support getting caught). Mages are also better for utilising W passive in lane + you also miss out on a lot of AS when the oathsworn isn't around after the recent change.
