Taliyah can still wreck face if you position properly. I play her whenever I get to go mid (which is rare these days, really) and even if I lose the game, I win my lane pretty hard.

DPS mage seems to be a thing they can't get right. Azir AurelionSol

Why was Aurelion nerfed again? Was it cuz of old Rylais? Feel like that was the only overbearing thing about him.

Zerenza1 votes

He plays the laning phase for you, which made him really strong in high ELO and pretty broken in competitive, he was pick or ban because he did sustained damage without auto attacks or spells and it wasn't exactly a low amount either.

Even now if you main Sol you'll probably get to diamond once you get used to him, in korea there are literally thousand of Sol mains in diamond because his kit plays the laning phase for you.

AurelionSol was (is) obviously a niche champ.... did u realy expect him to have so many player main him ?

Taliyah handless player can't handle her [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

Sexy Jack Rabbit1 votes

Considering Aurelion Sol is a giant fucking dragon with an awesome personality, then yeah, I kind of did expect people to play him. It's just that they tacked on this really weird kit onto what was going to be an awesome character.

Villainous V3 votes

I can see why people don't play sol. Dude's kit is hard as fuck to play as, and he gets fucked over by damn near every top/ mid laner with either range, or a gap closer. Props to those who main and do well with that guy

I just think these two new champs look cool and have interesting playstyles, and as such can't wait to try them out.

He's...actually pretty strong though? He has clear, hard weaknesses and it's difficult to track where you made a mistake since it's normally from 2 actions/spells/positions ago that you fatally screwed up. But once you do know him, he'll kick most champion's asses or just hold lane forever if he can't.

LCS games show people are target banning him against the Pros that know him very well. That's how nasty an Aurelion in the right hands can be.

You mean the two mid laners that built team comps around him and people didn't expect it. They based the strategy on early cheese.

He is a niche pick that relies on coordination.

He was over nerf despite not fitting the meta and them releasing tali. They nerfed his main items and still nerfed him more.

Tali does everything A Sol does but better. She can shove even faster and roam even more.

He still can be strong only if you put in the time and with the right comp.

As somebody who plays him very regularly, he can fit into most comps, vs. many matchups and has a ton of flexibility to work with. If you want, I can list how to deal with champions that supposedly should counter him/give him a hard time. He's only truly weak to SOME assassins and SOME divers (most divers don't even go midlane). If you have a good feel for Sol and don't make bad macro decisions, you're ok.

His escape mechanisms can double as burst and/or CC that can prep into an ally kill. He's useful when behind because you can act as portable ZZrot/plant extra vision on the map and escape/back with no problem (E), with less risk than Taliyah's ult. He is a master at holding lanes. He can push out mid, walk top in case the ally top died w/ teleport down, hold top, then E back to mid with little consequence.

If you check out the numbers enough, champions like Taliyah/Azir/Kalista/Kindred have struggled either slightly more or much more than Sol this season. I realize the stat numbers aren't exact, but they should be useful for general comparisons between champion performances.

If you're talking about the Rylai slow nerf, that didn't even affect Sol much because his spells aren't AOE. They're multi-hit. Rylai's passive is still just as strong on him, you just trade some stats and the cost reflects it. (AKA the slow duration on rylai is not less on sol. It was a targeted nerf, one that barely touched him and not even in ways Sol relied on.)

The sol-specific stats nerf was a large earlygame readjustment with some power budgeted into his lategame. He now gets more damage at level 9 than he did pre-nerf, in exchange for weaker earlygame and higher mana costs. This means you can't push for free, brainlessly, and then have plenty of mana to run to bot and kill people with. Also his E doesn't require you run around until it charges back up.

With pre-nerf Sol, there was no real counterplay vs. Sol if you were anything but another champion that actively exposed his weaknesses. Any typical mage, for example, couldn't handle Sol's pushing. Only champions like Talon or Ekko could, purely through their gapclosing and burst/kill/roam potential.

Sol is frustrating to play. It doesn't always feel like you're doing enough. I understand why people FEEL like he is weak, also. But he is not. He has so many options right now that I'd consider him almost BS. It's been said many times but counterpicking is not counterplay, and when facing a Sol that has mastery, you have fewer counterplay options than you might think.

Hell, here is a video showing all of his escape/burst mechanisms. He is extremely flexible. Just not easy to use properly, since a lot of his success is tied to good macro decisions and positioning based on predicting the enemy and knowing their cooldowns/attack patterns/goals. Every single matchup for him is different and Sol has to adjust. He gets a lot in return for it.

If you know what you're doing. If you don't, you'll probably get your ass handed to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCiiC6dis3E

Looked it up, by the way. Taliyah's base Ult cooldown is 180 / 150 / 120.

Sol's E cooldown is 60/55/50/45/40 and carries much less risk, with him able to cast Q and item actives during it without cancelling it (barring Zhonya, of course). That and no wall to accidentally kill teammates with, but we're assuming both champions are being played with mastery here.

Not sure about the numbers for when Taliyah builds full CDR, but Sol doesn't build any. Her roams don't seem to have any major advantage over his.

Granted, both champions can be balanced at the same time. It's not a contest. Weirdly, I kind of view it the opposite way, though. Why pick Taliyah when I could pick Sol and Talon?

I tried Tali out and just couldn't make her work, because she's difficult/unusual and does not mesh with my playstyle I felt weak playing her. I think she is underpowered but you seem to think she's a better choice. Now replace "Tali" with "Sol" in that sentence and you're basically saying the same thing I just did. Look at the dedicated playerbase (it's small), see if they're playing him in a majority of their match spreads (they are), and see their winrate (it's good). That gives a better idea of power balance than just "he feels bad and not many people can play him right, he must be weak."

As somebody who plays a crapton of Sol: He's fine. I can give paragraphs explaining why he's fine, how to deal with his huge weaknesses/bad matchups, how the item changes affected him, how to make macro decisions with him, etc. You can make up for almost every bit of Sol's issues unless you're fighting a Yasuo or a team consisting of Leona, Pantheon, and Jax.

But unless you want that, please just take my and his mains community's word for it. He might not be an approchable champion, but he is far from weak.

Now Taliyah, on the other hand...

if sol still has that delay nerf on his q im not playing him, its the only reason i stopped.

Because it would break him. Take Stormraiders, Movement speed quints, swift boots, grab an early GLP. Take Flash and Exhaust or Ghost for summoners. If you have a super bad matchup, take Zhonyas. This is the normal build for him on most players, with maybe slight deviation (sometimes zhonyas over GLP if really bad matchup, or sorc boots over swifties).

Use any combination of Flash, R, Q, Exhaust/Ghost, GLP active, and your insane speed/slipperyness once you hit midgame (E passive and E active) to live.

Sol is hard because it's hard to tell where you messed up. He's unlike other champions, because his "fatal mistakes" are normally a step removed. For most champion, you have a way to correct for when it's obvious you're in danger.

For Sol, you are in danger one step BEFORE most champions are. If somebody has jumped on you, you really messed up 2-3 actions/movements ago. This is why Sol is so hard for many people to pick up. But once you do learn to recognize those dangers AND have the good macro decisionmaking to match Sol's playstyle, you rarely have anything to worry about.

Even then, you have a lot of options if somebody gets directly on top of you. Check out this combo guide for a bunch of examples. These can also double as offensive burst options. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCiiC6dis3E

Q immediately into R -> enemy is stunned Q immediately into flashing away -> enemy is stunned, works like instant detonation. GLP/Q combo -> Slows enemy enough while you run away, is a likely stun Rylais makes landing Q even easier Exhaust/Ghost are free getaways but feel free to throw a Q at the enemy since they're unlikely to dodge it or will at least have to lose distance by changing their direction.

If you get caught out while exhaust/ghost, flash, AND your R is down, you have beyond fked up your positioning/choices and should watch the replay to see what went wrong. It generally means you positioned very poorly and didn't respect your enemies nearly enough or kept trying to duel the wrong people. It's easier said than done since Sol has very different limits from other champions, due to his kit.

If you still go "ew, Sol still looks anti-fun," no problem! But again, not weak, if you know how to handle him.

That's fine. Just please at least take the word of people who do play him very often/main him and the person that provided reasoning for why a delayed Q is fine in terms of his power. :]

SB Arneeman1 votes

They often make the champions unbalanced at release, and then they are nerfed or buffed after. If they were initially weak few people will play them, and people will also stop playing them after nerfs. Since they also try to make new champions have new(weird) mechanics in their kit many people will just play it when it's OP. The extra utility they are adding make the champions better in LCS, and as we all know, Riot loves to nerf everything played in LCS.
