2-3 smites per team is healthy for this meta, diversity, and tightens the bond between lane/Jg.
Ever since s5 started with the completely reworked jungle, the game has basically revolved around it.
Imo the jungler role is/was like three times more complex than any other role.
Cinderhulk forced players who rarely jungled and knew little about it to learn and adapt to the changing environment, especially since there were usually 2 hulks on each team for quite some time.
The general awareness of non-junglers rose dramatically, and in turn made the community a bit smarter overall.
Then Runeglaive was added(which is being double nerfed when it only needs a wrist slap) and that created another wave of diversity.
Now there is Sated Devourer, and soon to be a reworked warrior enchant, which is all good imo.
Smite on laners is like having an additional 4 summoner spells to chose from, helps with neutral objective control, and yields more resources from the jungle overall, because depending on the champion the jungler chose, they could be more of a invasive ganking type rather than power farmer(id rather have the gank jungler over the afk farmer) so many camps are untouched for minutes at a time.
Multiple smites mean multiple buffs from gromp and vision control from wolves/birds.
Its also nice in those dragon/baron contests, and for securing scuttle crab.
I feel like the lanes and jungle should be more connected and intertwined than it has been in the previous seasons, and these jungle changes are achieving it.
p.s. Please dont double nerf Runeglaive, nerf the aoe on non-jungle camps sure, but keep the magic conversion on next attack.
