No Skillshot that Can bank off of terrain?

I was thinking of that idea a lot lately and find it surprising it hasn't already been done.

It should gain extra effects when bouncing off terrain to reward the difficulty.

Just imagine the fun and unique interactions with it.

I can only imagine the amount of bugs that would arise from this.

And by arise I mean Azir. Because azir.

SH Azykan1 votes

especially depending on if his ult interacts with it (intentionally or not)

Evewynn4 votes

yeah, considering that it is only a wall for enemies, plus general azirness

I'm convinced that implementing a wall bouncing mechanic will on that patch make azir's wall suddenly become wind wall halfway through its duration

because spaghetti

Smite uses a different engine, the walls have smooth collider meshes that can react with the havok physics.

Wall bouncing skillshots are one of those things we've tested on a couple of prototypes, felt had good promise, but haven't found the right fit for. I'm pretty sure we'll do such an ability on a champion we ship at some point though. We've had most success with a 90 degree bounce off terrain approach, keeps the physics/kinetic feeling but also gives consistent enough behavior you can plan around it as both caster and enemy. Versions that attempted to calculate an expected angle off angle of hit to terrain and shape of terrain by contrast result in a lot of failed expectations.

Ideas for Velkoz perhaps?

RiotMeddler5 votes

Vel'Koz already has pretty unique to use abilities with his Q and R. Wouldn't want to put a wall bounce on the same kit as Vel'Koz Q in particular (serves the same need), so while I can see the appeal would want to do so on a different champ as a bread and butter skill.

What do you think of an ability that could throw back projectiles? Like i can throw back a jinx rocket and kill her with it

Hrmmmm.... It could work on sivir's q From sivir to boomerang blade's endpoint we'll set a right triangle, and an identical phantom path, which creates an isosceles triangle. If the blade hits terrain, it will continue on the phantom path, until reaching max range. When it hits max range, the boomerang travels the base of the triangle back to sivir. TL;Dr sivir q bounces off walls, comes back like normal and with math.

I'm not sure how much work would be put into this so feel free to toss it aside, but what about just a special gamemode where all skill shots are doubled in length and can bounce off walls instead of going through them? Probably alot of work to make though so like i said feel free to ignore it.

I would look forward to a champion that uses this mechanic. Don't let it down please.

Instead of doing in-depth mathematics or really simple right angles, wouldn't it be easier to do something in between where it will bounce off the wall at the same angle it contacts it based on where the champion is when it's fired, regardless of how it hits the wall? This would eliminate the issue with wiffs on terrain angles and allow for a higher skill ceiling.

The only "issue" I could see with this would be largely a balancing thing. Doing it this way could effectively double the range of the ability and other parts of the kit would probably have to be changed to compensate for a skill that could effectively be a curving Nidalee spear.

Selfishly, I would love if a champ came out with a nuke-ability that had an interaction like that. (I miss Nid's 2k-damage-spears-of-doom)

I know that you have experimented with a gate that copies skill shots before and i think that would be a great ultimate for this champion although it should probably be only for him. Add a wall to their kit like anivia W then all you need is a fourth ability maybe something that gives him a speed boost to line up shots faster and BAM there is your kit! I could see this maybe belonging to Viktors enemy who stole all the credit for blitzcrank and resurrected soin. A character that is already developed with lore and in my opinion a good thematic fit for this character from what i know about him.

I could see a 90 degree wall bank skill shot being very fun to use given the right champion (maybe put it in a yordle's kit?).

The mechanics of such a skill that went through my head was:

  • A linear skill shot that stops at the first unit hit (Chamion > Minnion > Monster > Champion spawned unit).
  • If the skill shot collides with terrain it resets it's trajectory to 90 degrees away from terrain hit.
  • If the skill shot collides with terrain it resets it's travel duration (repeat infinitely) until it collides with a unit, or reaches it's maximum distance from it's last travel duration reset.
  • To prevent a situation where a single skill shot is unable collide with a unit or reach it's maximum distance after colliding with terrain, the maximum life span of a single skill shot is 30 seconds.
  • The skill shot gives no vision, but you can see it traveling on the minimap.

I feel that it would create the best wall bank fantasy (especially in the jungle) where you can send the skill through the jungle in an attempt to hit someone in there (The billiards 6 wall bank shot to hit a blocked ball into the pocket comes to mind). It adds some scouting potential without being too oppressive since the opposing jungler can still dodge it, also since the ability give zero vision it's up to the player to determine whether their skill stopping suddenly is because it hit a jungle camp or if it hit the jungler, or if it simply timed out.

Thoughts from the community on this?

Graves Q gains a faster proc time when u hit terrain.

I think he mainly means literally bouncing off a wall at 90° or something kind of like how Vel'Koz Q currently works. The big problem is unless all the walls become mirrors and we get a marksman shooting Lasers it will hardly come to fruition since it would (likely) be a mage's ability........and in mid lane there are no walls.

Maybe I am wrong, but I am looking at this tread as if it is an idea for a new champion. If this is the case, why not also give the champion an ability that places a wall that could be used as an impassable barrier like an Anivia wall or Azir's ult. I would say if it can be placed like Rumble's Equalizer (but obviously not as long) then it can be better utilized in coordination with their ricochet ability.

Mysticman899 votes

So I wonder if the walls in league are sufficiently 'smooth' that ricochets would actually behave as expected (i.e. according to the law of reflection for light). It's possible that there's some subtle curves in most of the terrain that might make things less than ideal in practice. Still, it could be a fun idea to play around with.

That said, I am reminded of vel'koz's Q which captures a lot of the same angle manipulating mechanics that this would entail, so there is something at least kind of similar for players to play around with if they like the idea of being able to shoot around stuff by careful aim.

DiveAlive4 votes

I'm no coder by a longshot but maybe they could have a hidden passive that creates a smooth zone around any terrain within range, that only interacts with the ability.

like an invisible outline around terrain.

They are. The 'jaggedness' of the terrain is really just visual texture mapping. If it was really as non-uniform as it appears champion models would get stuck on walls much more frequently. Even the existing curves could easily be averaged to give a fairly consistent angle that could be roughly estimated at a glance. And, most likely a dynamic targeting indicator would be available to show the exact path in which the missile would take.

Would definitely be cool and I think it will happen, but the interactions with things that change terrain like azir ult and jarvan ult would be weird.

J4 ult is fine since the ability won't naturally bank off of minions.

I see it now. Jarvan ults Varus. Varus uses full strength Q (for some reason), and it just bounces a million times in his ult 50 shotting anyone in Jarvan's ult.

This is why there would need to be a limit to the amount of times the ability could bounce if it is a pass through ability, or the amount of times that it could bounce, stacking damage, if it is a single target ability.

Ñapoleoni1 votes

Don't like the "weather or not it could pass through an ability" because it ruins the clarity of the mechanic, and my comment was just a joke. You can only get damaged once on an ability that does flat damage.

The only reason I gave an either/or is because it is ultimately up to Riot to balance the ability, and most likely if it is a pass through ability it will have a limit to how many times it could proc on a single target (if it is designed to do so) and the damage per pass would be lower, but can stack up fairly high, again, at a limit. If it is deemed to be a single target and not pass through, then it would be more likely for the damage stacking to be a result on how many times it has bounced before making contact with that target, and the total damage would, again, be capped. Also, your statement about being damaged once per ability is false. Ahri Brand Draven Ekko Fiddlesticks Graves Karma Maokai Poppy Sivir Soraka Talon Tristana Viktor All examples of champions who have abilities that can deal two phases of damage to the same target with a single projectile or skillshot. Notice I did not include any DOTs. There are probably some that I missed too.

mean like a linear ability

like ez q

Elite4Runner4 votes

I actually really like this idea! Do you think that this should be a single target or pass-through skill shot?

I want to throw out an other idea. What if the skill shot gains additional range upon ricochet and can ricochet multiple times. So imagine if it is aimed well enough in the Dragon or Rift Harold/Baron pit it could bounce around a few times, dealing damage multiple times if it is a pass through ability. If it is a single target ability, maybe it would stack damage per ricochet. There would of course need to be a limit in either case to the number of times it can bounce or for how long it can bounce so it can't stack indefinitely then 1 shot a camp at spawn or an enemy who is dumb enough to walk into that space.

what would that accomplish? why would they only fix the wall angles when this certain champion is in the game? they still have to re-code all the wall angles so they should just do it for the map instead of making the map work differently when one certain champion in the game.

Not true. The 'jaggedness' of the terrain is really just visual texture mapping. If it was really as non-uniform as it appears champion models would get stuck on walls much more frequently. Why is everyone acting like this would be a difficult thing to program? Haven't you all played a computer pool game? Pretty much every version of this game has an aiming assist option that will calculate the path that the ball will travel. THE TERRAIN IS NOT AS COMPLEX AS IT LOOKS! If you go back to when Riot was doing Q&A for the new map in pre-season 5, they explained the terrain's collision geometry vs it's visible geometry. It is simple computer modeling, which I do have some education in.

I know this isn't the same, and I don't know if someone mentioned it already, but this could be like a kit interaction, like Champ X has a skill shot, but can put a mirror or a wall of some kind and bounce their skill shot off it. idk sounds cool.
