was the maokai nerf to E too much? no idea myself just wondering

I have no experience with maoka nor have I played LoL in a month so I'm asking you all for answers on this as to me it seems like the nerf to his E was quite big, the patch note states:

E - Sapling Toss REMOVEDFAT SAPLINGS Saplings no longer deal damage when they land (they still draw jungle monster aggro)

when I looked at the wiki it states this is the impact damage:

IMPACT MAGIC DAMAGE: 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 (+ 40% AP)

that seems like a significant nerf to lose that much damage, then again I haven't played LoL in a month so I'm not aware of how strong/op/too strong certain champions are so could someone enlighten me whether this was well deserved?

Seeing as Maokai was considered one of the best toplane picks and tanks in the game, no. I think the nerf is sizable enough to swing the title to Nautilus or Shen. People will still play him because of his kit, not his damage numbers. His wave clear might be slightly impacted but its not like Maokai can't just tank waves in front of his tower all day.

ah I see, I was not aware maokai was this strong which is why this nerf seemed huge, but if you say he is the best tank and top pick then it makes sense he got nerfed, thank you for explaining

I'm not saying he is hands down the best. Obviously there were a couple champions that countered him topside. If you rewatch some lcs games you'll see that in nearly every game hes either banned or picked. Overall just a strong champion.
