So, how are you all doing with Swain so far?

Cause I'm doing pretty awful with him. Been rushing, RoA and honestly, I'm starting to wonder why I'm doing it.

Beyond builds, I have some issues with parts of his kit. Namely his W and ult being too slow. His W is probably mainly good for vision, because using it in lane with that delay is...well you're probably not gonna hit someone unless their CC'd first. Now honestly if this ability was just used for vision I wouldn't be bothered, but since this is another way of gaining your shards outside of routing and killing people, it feels like gathering shards is slow (I guess I have a problem with his passive too).

As for his ult, honestly, it doesn't feel very impactful. I don't think he sustains himself enough to really make the most out of it in a teamfight if he's getting focused, but honestly, I don't think that's the problem. I think the explosion takes too long to come up, which while is helpful counterplay for enemies, for you it feels pretty damn annoying to die before you've drained enough to explode.

How are you all doing on him?

I think the big problem with Swain is that nearly all of his power is in his Q. At high levels it does an extreme amount of damage when it shotguns and has a very low cooldown (less than 2 seconds with high CDR). His W and E not only do less damage but they have absurdly long cooldowns, especially at low levels and without CDR. On top of that, his W and E are hilariously easy to dodge even without mobility skills and he requires them for his ult (and requires 5 for it to do decent damage after a long delay). His ultimate doesn't do nearly enough for the amount of drawbacks that it has (requires a shard just to activate, requires 5 to do full damage at the end, the healing is mediocre, the cooldown is very long).

The end result is he's nearly useless against champs that outrange him (playing him against Azir is hell on Earth), but at the same time he doesn't have the burst that someone like Annie has to reward him for actually getting in range.

Why pick him over Annie? I see absolutely no point. She's got an AOE (or a guaranteed point-and-click single target) stun to reward her for getting range. All he has is some damage and a skillshot root. The ONLY thing he offers is more sustained damage versus champions that he can successfully shotgun with his Q. Good luck consistently doing that versus anyone that has a brain.

Honestly, the champion's kit is a mess. His W is a ranged poke that feels tacked on. He's squishy but in order to collect soulshards and do max damage with Q you have to pull people TOWARDS you. There are many situations that you do NOT want to pull people towards you (let's say you're vs FIzz mid, do you really want to pull him into Q range even if you somehow land an E?).

right, vs melee champions i really dont want to pull them because thats just what they want. if i land his e on kat shes just going to shunpo on me when the root is over and kill me same with any other melee and honestly mages do the same thing his only hard cc and ability to dissuade people from fighting u makes people more likely to fight u when u land it.

the only time his e works 100% in my favor is when im being ganked and the jungle gets a little too close to my tower and i can pull them into it.

and this is a really minor complaint but often in teamfights i click someone just as they happen to get cc'd so there goes my passive, was it on someone i wanted to pull? maybe but i cant control how and when people use there skills.

Precisely. That's why the champion is in a bad spot right now. He has no built-in mitigation or even activated defenses to deal with these things. He's a squishy caster mage. With the old Swain, ult had a low cooldown, so you could build ROA and tank the kat (in an ideal world) and then heal back up while slowly killing her. Now if you ult she will just shunpo away and wait until it's over. You will not have the burst to kill her.

The old Swain had a dated kit but somehow this kit manages to feel even more dated. Everything other than this Q feels horribly underwhelming. I've laned against the new Swain on many different types of champions and not once have I felt threatened.

Pretty horribly, early game he feels pretty weak, and in fights you just don't really sustain long enough to stay alive. Not that I can really give a valid opinion on him though, I completely suck with him.

His popularity seems to be declining rather quickly. He just seems really bad right now, maybe he'll make better use of the new AP itemization coming soon.

Heartbreakingly bad.

I find him best bot lane, with extra cc. So easy to get soul fragments

Yup, Swain support is actually decent, but that's not a good sign for the direction they wanted his rework to embody in my opinion.

Praying for a revert, that's how I'm doing with new Swain so far.

I'm actually really enjoying him. Definitely a harder champ to master now, but I like that.

I'm not good yet, but I love the kit. One of the things that I think is working really well for me is going resolve secondary to get the extra healing from revitalize. I highly recommend it. With that, you can follow up on your grabs more confidently (and go in with ult more reliably). I think it makes a huge difference. Also going Phase Rush.

Basically, I'm doing a lot of things that other people said would be bad, but I'm finding that they aren't bad.

I'm going pred, cheep shots, eyeballs, and ingenious hunter. Then cosmic for more item cdr, and stopwatch as I think Zonyas is core. Goal is to be able to roam and use passive off teammates to really chain Cc into easy kills. the item cdr makes pred boots have gross uptime to the point it feels ok to just use them to return to lane or shift lanes, and zonyas is also a nasty up time.

item wise, really leaning to item 3157 as a core part of his builds. I am less wild about item 3027 Id rather split the stats it provides into separate item slots that are individual more effective in providing my current needs. Defensively item 3025 I'm finding darn useful on him. can face off adcs and bruisers a lot more effectively and helps maintain effective Q ranges, has nice cdr and fixes him up a nice amount of MP to spam ability's for quite some time.

I tried item 3003 quite a bit, Tear just takes so long to stack, and the shields only soso usefull. Stasis just does a better job of giving him more uptime in a fight to get the demon flair ready.item 3050 has some potential but the level of teamwork would probably require it to be built when duoing, the burn and slow are nice in relation to his ulti, weave an auto in and its double the slow of a item 3116 and has 3 times the duration. Only downsides a much smaller range.

item 3152 remains fun on aoe mages, swain also likes getting very close for his Q. it can be a life saver when your getting camped but Ive regulated it to a more niech pick as once I picked up Pred for my keystone I have not encountered much trouble in getting into range needed to threaten folks. item 3089 makes him hit like a truck. item 3100 less so but it takes out some of the pain using his Q long range. item 3041 is hard to keep stacked, still love it, but probably wont be a go to apart from more reactionary builds.

Like item 3151. But it doesn't provide my needs at the game time I want so I will probably hold off till the ap rework.item 3146 ... never made it out of practice tool for me, just did not provide enough healing to warrant its cost. saw like 2 more hp per second using it.

item 3065 I don't like this, he needs ap for his heal to really matter, and even then hes just not that strong built to drain tank given the lack of spell vamp items.

I've played him a bit and didn't do too badly. Only went 2/2/8 so not AMAZING but wasn't bad. Went for RoA fist like usual and it went fine.

Just had another game on him that did pretty decently in. Is kind of blah early game but he gets pretty strong mid to late.

Honestly I think that Glacial Augment and GLP is just a disgusting build on him that's severly underrated.

Personally I think he's balanced, but if you compare him to other mid and top lane champions he is underperforming and might need some QoL+mana cost buffs.

NorthTurtle111 votes

his q needs to to only have collision with champions and his e needs to be slightly faster then he would have something resembling an early game. games normally don't last much longer past 30 minutes in my experience and swain feels to late game focused to be true good.

he is god awful, they rektd his ass with no lube, im a swain main and i am forced to quit this game bcuz they made him into a shit support champ. NO dmg , and his ult is a joke that may or may not go off. Fuck it, I herd Fortnite is badass

"Forced to quit"
No one's forcing you to do anything and if this rework is your reason for quitting the game its on you.

He's at 47% winrate on Lolking right now. Not awful but still significant. He's too weak. I personally feel weak as a kitten with him now. His W is almost unusable due to the delay. His Q only gets good late. His R would be great if it were on a 30-45 second cooldown but it's twice that.

I am not upset at Riot for reworking him, but I am upset that they seemed to let the complaints of 10,000 fighters scare them into underpowering the rework off the bat. Yes, old Swain was frequently hard to deal with and an absolute monster when fed - but that's half the toplane. You can't give a good Darius one hook or the lane, potentially the game, is lost after that - same with Riven and one successful stun combo or ult. You can't give a good Nasus player more than 20-25 minutes of playtime or they can frequently carry 1v5.

I never complained about how unfair these champs feel when they're ahead, because I had my own. Now it feels like Swain is "fair" but a lot of other toplaners aren't, so the lane isn't fair again. I can't play new Swain into about half the field, his waveclear is so bad, and he's so underpowered compared to the old one.

ModCaliCoastReplay1 votes

The best way they could try to fix him in my eyes is to speed up Vision of Empire's animation time and buff its damage versus minions. He needs to be able to hit champions with it even outside of other CC, and to clear a wave so he doesn't get pushed under tower by more than half his opponents. I would bet that alone would get him nearly to balanced again.

YuGiHo1 votes

Another issue is getting shards late game is tough, u get +1 for your passive and +1per enemy champ hit by w but i usually only wind up having a max of 2-3 shards late game for teamfights

also needing a minimum 1 shard to even use the ult sucks since you still need to charge up to use r2 so why do we need to be locked out of it in the first place? why cant i try to earn shards during ult?

Has anybody tried using Resolve runes (Revitalise specifically) and some of the items that boost healing for quicker R trigger?

zaire901 votes

I played him top twice cause he happened to not been banned and Ive been doing pretty well and this was before I found out I could press his ult again to make it do some burst.

I freaking love his kit. I'm derping around right now with Predator rune and mobility boots. Making lane ganks is easy with any teammates with hard cc, it chains togeather so well. item 3025 functions as a pretty pleasant defensive option imo. Easy to keep spellblade up, easy to weave auto attack into his attack pattern. good for kiteing, good for chasing, good for peeling, and provides enough MP that I don't have to rush for item 3070 item 3802 and their upgrades, once ya have item 3157 your semi tank, able to put damage out, have hella utility, and bring a real threat to folks every time you go mia.

I like his W, hard skill but rewarding. Getting snipes off, or using it to cut off players ganks/excapes feels grand. E, its got a deceptive aoe on its trigger, like Ziggs Q you can clip minions on the edge of its hit box at max range to hit unsuspecting champions. Can be difficult to weave it to your targets in minion or champion heavy fights but its a pretty rewarding skill. Passives my favorite part of this kit and provides so many windows to chain CC on the targets that matter.

So far, its frusturating to be in 2v1s, pretty difficult to handle them. But his passive chains off teammates into the rest of his kit so well that its frusturating for others to get 2v1d by swain so I feel its a fair trade off. Cass seems like a brutal counter in lane.

all in all, like the catch potential he has, like the utility and versatility and I will be happy to keep trying builds that upset folks who religiously obey the meta. I feel different champions should have a new playstyle or your just wasting their potential trying to copy what others in the game already do.

Still working on trying to get the right feel for correct levels of aggression, I'm going excessively ham still and it hurts, thou a lot of times I feel left to dry as teammates did not follow up and I get to watch some one walk away with >100 hp. [sg-soraka]

I think his visuals are great, but his kit is kinda crap. Disappointing too... I'd REALLY like to play him, but he's just got such a crap kit.
