7.9 Wow what a patch

The "tank meta" patch is here and... I'm pretty sure it is the patch of bruisers and ad+survivability builds that should never work but are broken.

Before I get into the details, let me say I am a toplane main who plays renekton, darius, rumble, and cho mostly. I also play jungle and support (by choice not just autofill). While I enjoy having a stronger late game on Renekton with new items/changes to items, I will fully admit the changes have made champs like renekton and darius overtuned. So what's good, what's bad, and why do I think that?

For champs with high innate sustain like Darius Renekton etc., item 3812 now just makes it so they can never be bursted low enough to 1-shot even as a team unless they are way behind the curve. The lifesteal plus their innate sustain via q is just too damn strong. I think 20% bleed on death's dance instead of 30% would go a long way to helping this item out. More drastic measures can be taken afterwards if needed.

item 3053 now has nearly the same hp if not more hp than many tank items while giving a disgusting amount of damage. Due to the hp nerfs in exchange for armor buffs to hp+armor items, sterak's is no longer making people sacrifice 100 or so hp in exchange for some more damage - I'd say this item needs it's ad dropped back down to old levels OR needs it's hp reduced back to what it was before (about 100hp less than hp+armor items; as in 300hp instead of 400).

Black cleaver is in an ok spot I think. Nerf it more and champs depending on it will drop in winrate quite a bit. It actually is not the cause of problems on bruisers right now since it's armor pen was dropped to 24% from 30% - a good change when the strength of tank items was swapped to the resistance portion of the item instead of the hp portion. This change kept cleaver in check decently.

item 3194 Is actually really nice vs some champs and can be built by both ad and ap champs. It's stats seem/feel reasonable enough and was a great addition to help deal with the likes of Cassiopeia Ryze and probably some others in lane.

item 3001 was a nice change and I think we might see some Chogath bruisers played in pro-play if the enemy team goes double ap thanks to this item. It gets him through laning and buffs any magic damage his teammates do while also making his base stats do more work. I imagine the same could be said for amumu building it.

item 3143 is hard to get a read on. The crit reduction is nice, but you sacrifice 50+ hp to get it. The aoe slow upon activation is rarely used effectively - as in allowing people to chase or kite where they would not have been able to do so without it - even in high elo play from what I have seen. Perhaps changing it to an active that temporarily slows enemy attack speed by an additional 15% would be a better active. With champs running wild from items like steraks + death's dance though, maybe it is just making me underestimate this item. Overall, it doesn't feel horrible, just not as good as some others. Fix the death's dance, sterak's black cleaver meta and maybe randuin's will feel like it's just fine as-is.

item 3026 rush on draven if he killed enemy adc early in laning phase? Just seems like a bit of a lose-lose for the enemy adc. Not saying GA is overpowered, but definitely gotta be a pain for anyone facing a snowballing draven with first item ga. Perhaps draven is the issue; he's overtuned to compensate for the fact that few know how to play him well so that even mediocre players who get any kind of lead will tend to just run away with the game. I get we all want some draven in league, but giving him broken stats with his q is not the best answer you can come up with.

Randuin's feels insane IMO. Getting the most out of the active takes practice but it will absolutely decimate certain low mobile team comps. Do you build Death's Dance first?

I'm not saying I never build it. I'm saying that sterak's death's dance, cleaver (or some other ad item) just makes bruisers too strong so they basically don't care about your resistances because you are now just a walking hp potion to them while they are still basically as tanky as you in teamfights if not 5 man focused and deleted asap.

No. You need some hp and the components for death's dance aren't amazing for most toplaners as a starting build. Death's dance is second or 3rd depending on how matchup is going - do you need more survivability or can you get by just rushing more damage. I'd say

  1. cleaver
  2. sterak's or death's dance
  3. the other one
  4. resistance item of choice *due to the overloaded durability you already have, you can either build 1. more damage 2. traditional - second durability item of the other type of resistance or 3. (shouldn't work but does due to dd, sterak's being too good right now) second resistance item of same type - this is probably the best choice. Ex: build 2 mr items for 4th and 5th items, delete enemy adc, you can completely ignore their 2 magic damage dealers while doing so or... vice versa - delete enemy mid and never have to buy an mr item - just 2 armor or armor+hp items as 4th and 5th items. This let's you take minimal damage from enemy ad top, jg, and adc while 1-shotting their ap mid. Then you basically have a 5v4 with you maybe missing 20% of your hp and easily being able to tank the rest of their team's damage and lifestealing it all back up thanks to death's dance, renek/darius q, and sterak's hp shield. The only killer is if your team is useless and enemy has tons of hard cc. Played one game where I literally would get chain cc'd for 4+ sec unable to do anything. Braum, ahri, galio, etc. just chain stunned, knocked up, charmed, etc.
