why is there no mage meta?

Mages wer meta during season's 4 LCS.. Orianna, Syndra, Xerath were quite popular. Dat old bluebuff :p

I'm not sure if you can call it a meta, but mages are very important in how your team will play and how well it will counter the enemy team and all of these things are affected by the meta. Like right now there is a "tank" meta. So what do you do to kill tanks as a mage? DPS. Who are the highest DPS mages? and . Or you counter the tank meta with your team by bringing a hyper carry ADC like to kill the tanks. And what kills ADC's? Burst mages like or . Or you can have a strong teamfighting mage like or to provide a lot of utility or damage( and ). Yet another option is a siege mage like or which is great with a tanky team who can peel as your frontline as you whittle down your opponents before engaging in a teamfight while pressuring towers.

I might be missing a type of mage type, but most mages fall into one of these categories. They all have a place in certain team comps and you can see this in pro play.
