While Death Recaps are the Topic of the Day [Recap Exploration]

So I've been thinking about what information might be cool to have displayed on a Death Recap, and put together a quick mock-up of what I've been considering. I'd love to hear what there is here that isn't useful to people, or what super useful stuff I may have overlooked, as I think, while Riot would obviously do their own explorations, a community-built Death Recap might really help them see what we'd like.

To start us off, here's my mock-up, followed by an explanation. The goal is to make important information quickly accessible (who killed me, with what, for how much damage), while providing other details for those who want to dive in.

##Death Recap Section This section has two tabs: This Life and Past 20 Seconds. By default it shows you the amount of each damage taken by each source (up to 6 sources), up to nine of the spells/effects you were hit with and who killed you. By hitting More Details next to any one you would bring up a small pop-up that would show a spell-by-spell breakdown of damage taken from that source. The option to toggle between This Life and Past 20 Seconds is so you can see things like "did I lose half my health to minions before I got into that fight that killed me?"

##Total Champion Damage Taken This section has two tabs: Personal and Team. It shows similar data for each (save that it parses damage done to just you or to everyone on your team) with one exception which we'll get into later. It also only parses damage done by champions.

The team panel is added so you can judge the strength of other laners without being in that lane -- if you've been out of fights and see a huge spike from Tryndamere, for example, you know how strong he is even if you haven't interacted with him yet.

The By Type section gives you a breakdown of the percentages of damage you / your team are taking, and an additional breakdown of whether that physical damage is by spells or attacks to help you itemize properly.

The By Enemy section shows you the total damage percentage of each enemy (on the right), and their individual damage splits within that percentage (the colored bars).

The Tips section offers new-player advice on possible itemization tips. When in the Team view, it would swap to a section showing your ally's damage taken by type -- but only as percentages of their total damage taken, not as numbers or percentages of team damage take (as those latter two can be used to harass teammates for poor performances, while the former is useful for determining who is prioritizing which characters and what team-based items you might want to pick up).

Thoughts? Is this information something that would be useful to you when planning itemization or figuring out who to focus on the enemy team? Is there excess information here that isn't needed? Is there helpful information that is missing? Would the interface be too confusing?

I like it, I like what you address with it, and I like how much information is available.

But I don't like how cluttered it feels.

I have no idea how to reconcile that though because those two desires are counter to one another.

I hope this feedback was useful, because I genuinely want to be helpful and not be bashing.

Edit: What I want to see from a death recap:

  1. Who did what types and amounts of damage to me?
  2. Who on my team helped me and how much did they help me?
  3. What got me killed, IE was I caught by CC or was I simply hit for a lot of damage.

Nah, that's totally helpful.

The problem of more vs. less info is difficult though. I'll workshop it a bit -- I'm sure there's a solution somewhere. :)

Okay! Also I edited my comment to show other useful things I'd want to see.

If multiple lists and bar graphs appear too cluttered it might work to use a pie chart or condense things into a single bar graph. Might, but also might not. Just adding more thoughts.

If using a pie chart it might be interesting to show it as %HP and animate how it changes over time, moving one way or the other with different damage, shields, or heals. Lines could indicate CC affecting the character to.

Or it might be interesting to have a bar-graph that shows overkill damage as well as how much your heals or shields increased your health pool compared to that damage taken.

On top of that it might be useful to separate death recap from death, and make it something a player could open up even while alive. Dunno about that though, might move it away from intended uses and create problems.

I like it a lot; the only thing from a designer standpoint is that they usually try to make it super fancy with mist and stuff, but from a purely technical/separate look I'd friggin love this in the game. The only thing is tips.

I'd avoid ever putting tips. They STILL recommend Ashe start with thornmail I think in the tutorial. I just don't think Riot knows how to properly set up tips that don't get outdated with meta shifts.

Hence mock-up. One step up from a wireframe. An art treatment is among the last things you'd do. :)

Touche! It was just something I noticed. xD

I think tips are fine you just have to be less specific so meta changes don't skew it. Champion tips in particular are fine outside of specific itemization tips, since they will be individually updated upon the champion receiving large-scale changes.

Additionally, class specific tips could be implemented. For example, playing a tank vs playing a marksman and dying to basic attacks:

Tank

  • You took a lot of physical damage from basic attacks, consider buying armor or items that reduce basic attack effectiveness.

Marksman

  • You took a lot of physical damage from basic attacks, consider staying near allies that can help peel these threats off of you.

I wrote out three different posts, only to delete them when I looked back and saw what I was about to suggest. I think you've nailed it pretty darn well. The only suggestion I would say is the tips need to stay generic, and not mention anything too specific. I would only mention what Master Yi can do, and suggest itemizing against him, rather than the comment about armor and attack speed slowing.

The only reason I say this is because League changes, and updates to tips and tutorials are not particularly quick, so something like that could fall behind (looking at you Thornmail Ashe). That said it's only a very minor suggestion, and one that can be completely avoided if the tips stay up to date when talking about specifics.

I love it, we really do need a new death recap and one as informative as this.

I especially want multiple instances of damage to show.. like part 1 and part 2 of ahri Q. Each individual tower shot, each individual auto attack, etc.

Would be useful to have a detailed damage/healing/shielding report after the match. Though this might take a lot of work would be a welcome featured i would think for players to analyse,

Why not just a simple death cam with the option to open a window that would include comprehensive data of what skills and type of damage was dealt in that moment?

The death cam would be perfect to understand what mechanically happened that led to the player's death, while the data window would provide statistical feedback to help them build better defenses if they wanted to (Armour, MR, Health, etc.).
