Why am I occasionally getting Plat players in my normals now?

Just recently, I would only get matched with silver/bronze and the occasional gold player... And a lot of literal noobs (actual new players) because I am a noob as you can see from my match history. Last week and this week, I started randomly seeing plats in my games and am seeing them slightly more often, why?

Im not good enough to have a Plat on my or the enemy team :/, I expect silver/bronze because I suck. Someone explain how this is supposed to work again.

Well there's 2 ways to look at it. If it happens very very frequently, is your win rate good in normals? (you can check in the lobby after a match)

Maybe you got unlucky, but you will also improve faster if you are being challenged, even if the games are hard. You will be able to notice things the enemy players did, even if you lose, that caused them to win. Sometimes, you might lose and that's all there is to it, but you can use that loss to figure out how to become even better! [slayer-jinx-wink]

If you don't know it already, there is no direct correlation between ranked MMR and normal MMR.

The most logical explication would be that they only play ranked, happened to be in your game because they roughly have the same MMR as you (they don't play normals often enough for their MMR to increase). Since it's the end of the season, and Platinum/Dias can't decay (decay starts after 28 days of not playing ranked, and there's less than 28 days until the end of season), unless they are grinding for the next tier, there's no point playing ranked anymore.

Another explication would be that they were duo with a lvl <30, and the duo's average MMR was around yours.

At this stage of the season, most people have hit their ranked goals, so may only play ranked now to prevent decay, when previously they'd be grinding ranked all the time. As a result they'll be playing more normals then previously, so chance of bumping into them is higher.

Additionally, many higher ranked players mostly do just play ranked, so their normals mmr is well behind their ranked mmr, and so despite being plat or diamond, they might have a normals mmr along the lines of a silver player, and so they're matched with/against silver mmr normal players despite their solo/duo rank.

FWIW, a lot of those higher rank players are unlikely to be playing their main champs and/or their main roles, so try not to be too intimidated by them, as it's quite possible they're learning a new champ/role and actually are playing at a silver ish level.
