Mordekaiser; Where does he currently stand

Goodbye season five, hello season six. We've come a long way since patch 5.16 and Mordekaiser's controversial rework. It's been around thirteen patches since then and Mordekaiser has gone from OP pick or Ban to literally one of the worst champions in League if you go by statistics. But where does he stand in terms of game health and power level?

What's working? +Mordekaiser functions as a Juggernaut; He's a melee threat with unholy amounts of damage +Mordekaiser has been shifted from Burst into a more //healthy// DPS pattern +Mordekaiser can roll solo lane again; Hooray +His core theme as an soul-enslaving undying metal Tyrant is actually working out rather well +Mordekaiser is less of a brick wall in lane and has a more healthy laning pattern

What's currently inhibiting Mordekaiser from being "decent" -Mordekaiser has one of the lowest base stats in the game -The rework didn't tackle his unhealthy aspects well enough (Ultimate feeling either OP or UP depending on the ghost) -He still needs a VGU (-Pure AP builds are becoming less and less effective)

Base stats Yes, as it currently stands this is the main deciding factor of how Mordekaiser is going to perform. Base stats are a powerful tool to trim a champion's power and making them spike with items and not with levels.

Mordekaiser's reign of terror Bot lane was ended not only by making his sustain basically non-existent most of the time and crippling the only thing making him viable down there; his XP passive on Harvester of Sorrow, but also by making his base armor a mere 20!!

So the question is; Does Mordekaiser need a base stat buff in order to become a solid champion instead of only being played by the most dedicated mains? Only a few hundred more health, five movement speed and maybe three more armor would help him but I'm not delusional: Mordekaiser is inherently hard to balance A simple stat change might just be what pushes him over the edge. Yet it's also what he so desperately needs right now. It's a dance with the devil when it comes to balancing Mordekaiser but this doesn't mean he should be left to rust.

Mordekaiser works. It's a bit rocky and highly matchup dependent, but he does work as a champion. He just feels too frail for a Juggernaut in metal Armor and with the recent changes to Sterak's gage I feel Mordekaiser might just be on the edge of viability, if he already isn't.

I just had a match with a morde who more or less carried our entire team. The guy was a monster 1v3ing everytime I looked away.

I think if anything right now they should at least give him 10 more base armor imo, for at least the thematic of the fact HE IS ARMOR (like wth). I'm okay with him having less health for now because of rito's idea of juggernauts need to build health, but then they should follow up with the other side of their equation of him having high base resistances :/.

edit: none of which is going to happen because rito thinks Xin is okay right now, and nerfing sterak's like you said earlier is "heading in the right direction".

Typical Riot. They see a problem, removes it, without consequences or with if they couldn't fix it fast. Even if players aren't happy about changes, Riot will pretend that they forgot about them for a few years.

**Rito **-"we are not planning any changes for Mordekaiser atm, were busy with more important things - we must Buff Xin Zhao without a reason and make him over powered"............... Maybe players will start banning Xin instead of graves - will be one problem less. /kappa/

Riot gave Kassadin a few little changes and made him viable agen, after being unplayable for a year or so.... Why is Riot is ignoring Mordekaiser like they were ignoring Kassa? At least they could make some updates or changes to Morde on PBE to let Morde fans know that Riot care about them.

I agree with you all 100%, I can't imagine how champion can have such terrible base stats and have such low impact late game for an average player. I recently played him with 79 MR against ekko at level 1 and he still was able to take more then half of my health with one rotation after a few levels....

Edietd: I think he might still work in certain team comps, but theres a lot better options, besides him.

Totally agree, dude. Loving Mordekaiser right now, but they need to realize that no one will ever take him bot lane. Ever. He was a solo laner, and will always be a solo laner.

its because they had no adc pentakill skin, so they said fuck it lets make mordekaiser bot lane

I think Morde is starting to look very much like he did Pre-rework. Very sink or swim. He has a certain point like Jax where he becomes an unkillable god, but he takes far more effort to reach that because he is even less safe than Jax in a lot of matchups. The ideal builds for Morde don't really seem to help much for lane or mid-game and you don't really feel his power growth until he is suddenly mopping the floor with everyone (which is very unlike pre-rework morde where you could feel the power of every item you bought right after you bought it).

I did this recently. I got Rylai first, which is a huge hump to get over just to be able to trade efficiently, and I think I mainly got by on luck because I cleaned up a lot of teamfights where the enemy didnt GT*O when they were done. Then I got gunblade for sustain and then he was _ kinda_ tanky. Sort of. That fell off a bit so I went for Sterakk and I was going to finish with some tank items, but I used dragon to 1v3 and finish the game with Nexus.

So eventually he gets to be super tanky, but not until all the pieces of Exodia are Assembled.

He's OK, but it just feels really strange to me.

You'll feel a great sense of achievement! I recently started my climb to plat with Mordekaiser and hell, it does feel good to impress other people with a supposedly bad champion. But yeah, takes a while to actually climb^^''

It was a colossal mistake to make one of the already most immobile melee champions into an 'adc'. They should've just tried making a new champion to do that instead of ruining another. And you're right, his stats got nerfed nearly across the board in the rework, making his top lane gameplay feel like he's a tincan all game. Between that and the lame graphics & animations they swapped out for, he's not even satisfying to play anymore when ahead.

Mord definitely needs some sort of engage or hard CC, that's all i ask for, would make ganks 10000000x more viable

Death is the best cc.

I really don't think Morde will ever be balanced properly until they remove that passive of his and put something less toxic in place of it and then rework his entire kit...again.

His base armor does need improving, although with his passive I doubt it'd be given too high a value, otherwise he could just shrug off short trades like they're nothing early on. I'd say the one thing that does need just as much improving is his health values, particularly health per lvl. His health pool needs to be pretty small early, otherwise health runes would be mandatory on him to get better value out of his shield and become immovable, but DAMN is his scaling bad.

He needs a bigger health pool in the mid-late game to survive skirmishes and teamfights, as his build paths aren't exactly like the other juggernauts. Rylai's and Sterak's are staple items, and maybe you'd get item 3151 if there were a lot of health stackers, but past that he needs a lot more damage-oriented items to be a big threat. It's not like the other juggernauts who can get Cleaver and T.H. and be pretty much set for damage (whether they build more is completely up to them).

I feel like they should have given Morde a little armor on his W. Like 5 base at first rank. It was really obvious during duo laning that his W didn't feel enough metal.

Add to his W an extra passive that gives him a token bit of armor for offense when it is on (scaling). So if you get super fed you can shred.

I feel making his base stats high is just going to create imba with no opportunities.

I would like his old Q to come back with the echo effect, and without the isolation bonus. But to make him less of a lane bully, make it so that it only echoes to champions. Possibly combine his old Q and new together? Ramping up damage that echoes, although you would have to tone it down a bit.

I like his E, some damage and survivability rolled up in one.

His W I would like with minor tweaks it. Since HP is desired, make it heal off max % HP per unit hit, and then do damage based on the heal. Maybe 1% per minion/small monster, and 3% against champs/large monsters. So if you stack on him he gets a big heal, but if not, a smidge of a heal. It would follow the current W AoE damage and heal on activation/end. It may look extreme if he has 5 minions around him along with 5 champs (20% max HP heal), but what are the chances of that happening? He should be a Jugg, so don't be near him(this goes with if old Q and new Q merged).

I like/dislike the damage distribution on his ult, less burst but more of a dot.

Also, in regards to his low base HP, I think it is fine as is. Multiply his base HP by 1.25 (his HP and shield combined) and that is very near Darius level.

The nerf on Sterak is going to be felt a lot unfortunally.

I hope we'll find way around that and that Riot comes to their senses and make a better work on it.

Lack of CC also makes him really bad as a top laner to rely on late game. Makes it harder to play on any lane really. Having to buy an expensive item like Frozen Mallet/Iceborn or Rylais just to get some CC is really bad, he should have a slow in his kit on his Q or E. (Or ult if you want him to be a 1v1 duelist, though might be really unfair to lane against.)

Malicious Metal1 votes

He almost always gets a rylais, making him have a 40% slow on each of his abilities, but yeah. He does thrive in heavy cc comps, A tank jungler and an engage support make for great Mordekaiser teammates.

My absolute favorite team comp's something like this; Mordekaiser Top Nautilus Jungle Talon Mid Leona Support Lucian /Kalista ADC

Champions in Season 5 and 6 that need to buy an item to get CC means they are suffering really hard in that aspect, whether or not these items fill that gap it's still a big cost and ask when a champion has to buy it 90% of the time and has to sacrifice damage and other stats like CDR etc for it. I mention these 2 seasons because these 2 seasons have shown that CC items really aren't needed anymore and they add only a buff to your current CC (Random example: Ryze buying Rylais buffs his ult AOE giving all spells a Slow and increases his damage with the CC mastery) for a lot of champions now. Frozen Mallet was never bought past Season 4 but now it's even more useless, only Gnar gets it at times. A lot of champions now have CC and reworks giving them more CC that the champions left behind (Master Yi, Urgot, Teemo, Morde) have to buy these items to stay afloat and that's just really bad design if even a long range caster like Jhin gets a CC and Mordekaiser a short melee range slow walking dude can't just get at least a 20% slow on his E. I'm honestly not even asking for a 60% slow or anything crazy just a small slow might be enough to help him.

Also yes! Mordekasier loves a good CC comp, when I used to pick him Jungle I used to try and tell my team to pick champions that can get me close to people, 50/50 chance it happened and didn't. I haven't played Morde since the last nerf that kept him out of jungle due to Q damage nerf.

He doesn't function as a Juggernaut though. His shielding is very weak and very difficult to maintain. His W doesn't work without humping someone's leg. He has no CC which still puts him in the "good luck hitting them Q's" category.

He really only has 1.5 tools - his Ult and if you're lucky his Q

This is all a far cry from what he used to be.

You're doing god's work MM - but you're way too generous in your "what's working" category.

I love the guy but from the hell they put him through makes me think that he needs a full relaunch. My reason for it just like quite a few other champions riot just doesnt know what to do with him and are scared to do anything. And hearing from the dedciated mains like you makes me think they need to actually communicate with you guys to figure out what is actually best for the champions and how to make them healthy like this game should be instead of the messed up broken code of a game it is

9kPluzZ1 votes

OHMIGAWD, WE KNOWWWW. Morde isn't popular, so riot isn't gonna care if he is weakish. WHY ARE YOU SO OBSESSED?

Nechronia1 votes

Don't forget the ghost AI, pressing R on someone seems like it only makes the ghost actually attack them like, half the time. And that's just the champion ghosts, don't even get me started on the dragons AI.
