Is Garen better as a situational bursty mid-laner than a top laner?

I actually really enjoy Garen. He's a fun champion that almost gets a ton of reactions whenever you build damage with him. When you hit someone with an Q for more than half the carry's health, only to finish them off with a spin for the other half followed by a giant sword in their chest, it's incredibly fun.

However even if you build Garen normally, it's a lot less... enjoyable. Even Nasus with his arguably weaker early game, still has something that junglers can use in a gank. A ranged slow that lasts for years. Garen's complete lack of reliable CC makes his early game even more abysmal since most of the time even if you're pushed under your tower, the jungler will mostly gain nothing from ganking you, since Garen also has no reliable engage to drop on his laner when the jungler shows up. This means that if the jungler is looking for a gank and Garen just suddenly runs at his laner, they're most likely go "okay I'm about to get ganked" and walk away.

Of course someone can say, "You play Garen for the mid-late game, not the early game." Well that's actually one big problem, as a lot of top laners are not. Even other mid-late tanks/bruisers still have something that Garen doesn't. CC. Maokai, Malphite, Illaoi, Singed, Sion, Darius, heck even off-meta top laner picks like Zac, Taric, and Heimerdinger have CC for the jungler to gank with.

So my question is this, is Garen arguably more and viable as a AD mid-laner pick into certain lanes? Like Zed or Katarina?

here is the thing with garen. he has one of the highest versatility in the game when it comes to his item builds.

as far as ad items go, you can build pretty much anything that accomodates your playstile. while you always want a couple of defensive items and focus on bruiser builds overall, as far as offensive items go, you can build whatever you want according to the situation.

here are some examples:

  • early roaming and looking for picks

keystone predator, sorcery secondary with water walking and celerity

core items item 3142 item 3742

you want to do this mostly, if you have a favourable matchup on top lane and and easily gankable target on mid lane

  • split pushing

core items item 3078 item 3053 (fun fact, triforce+steraks sheen procs deal over 400 damage on garen lategame and wreck turrets. the raw power you get out of its passive often compensates for the wasted gold on mana.)

runes of your choice

  • vanilla bruiser

core items item 3071 + defense like item 3068 or item 3742 or item 3065

mostly useful if youre not very secure on the champion and when you dont know if you can win lane. its also the better choice against very tanky teams due to the extra armor shred.

  • crit carry

core items item 3031 and possibly a zeal item, depending on how things go

infinity edge is his most effective offensive item, and just building it into a standart bruiser build will significantly increase your ability to 1v1 and carry skirmishes. the reason why it works is, because garens q and spin are able to crit.

an infinity rush can be good when youre already snowballing your lane and want a serious power spike to press your advrantage.

honorable mentions:

item 3800 if your team needs a solid frontliner and soft initiator. you get this into heavy defensive bruiser builds.

item 3077 can improve his waveclear. you can use the active during his spin

item 3060 can be useful if youre playing against certain ap matchups. singed hates the item for example, since he can only destroy promoted minions very slowly with auto attacks. it can screw with ap split pushers with a lot of waveclear.

item 3022 ive seen some people build this item last season with fervor. it could work into some more auto attack focused builds like the triforce splitpushing build. havent made much experiences myself with mallet, but the ad/high health combionation fits into the stats garen likes.

Eh, I don't think so. One of the main reasons to play Garen later in the game is to be this unstoppable paladin of justice that nails people without caring about much. You pick him as a great anti-carry since he will always have a large damage advantage against whoever on their team is fed, meaning even if he sucks booty in the early game, he is amazing.

No, no and no. The ideal build on Garen is as follows.

item 3071 item 1001 item 3068 (generic tank items for the situation) Sometimes you are allowed to build ghost blade but no more, no further than that. You become this unstoppable juggernaut who can not be killed who can completely nuke carries and simply become a team fight nightmare, not once in my life have i gone "oh no it's mid Garen" but every time Garen is picked on the enemy team part of me curses fearing the dreaded top juggernaut.

You're not getting it. You completely missed the entire point of this post and what was asked.

You have to GET to that point of becoming a juggernaut. You don't just start the game with Black Cleaver. The entire point of this post was to ask if garen would be more enjoyable/fun in another lane where he doesn't get his teeth kicked in for 80% of the game, and if you're going up against, ahem, Illaoi, Darius, Teemo, Irelia, Sion, insert top laner with better early game than Garen, you're not going to have fun.

So the entire post was to ask if Garen was better in mid-lane for the early-mid game. And your post did absolutely nothing to answer that question.

If you want a tanky midlaner that does burst damage just grab Vlad, Garen is not that good overall in comparison.

Same is true in top lane with the whole Darius being Garen with a better kit thing.

On a side note: If your team is far ahead and you can afford to play lenient, try Crit Lifesteal Garen - item 3031 item 3072 (but build at least one armor item and tabi first, or else it's really troll). Your E will melt the enemy team like butter where at the same time you are nearly unkillable.
