Does it ever feel like All Random All Mid (ARAM), doesn't feel random at all?

Sometimes I feel like the mode just.. isn't random at all! I don't understand it at all. Sometimes you get a game where it's nearly a perfect composition for the mode, and sometimes you just wonder if it's even really that random.

That's because there are legitimately just flat out ARAM-only accounts.

Now, is it right to say that every single game has a bunch of ARAM only accounts? No. It's not. But they do exist and there are a lot of them. And the higher the elo you get in ARAM, the more chances you'll have of running into ARAM-only accounts.

There was a suggestion that I've seen quite a few times in the past. And I think that it's appropriate to bring this up again.

Unlock all champions in ARAM only.

This not only insures that every match will be 100% random, but it also allows for everyone to trade with every person.

Yes, this means that sometimes you might get a champion that's "boring" or "not fun to play". But that's the whole point of playing randomness. That's the point of playing a match where you get a random champion and throw it into a bunch of other randomly chosen champions. It's the risk you take when you play this mode. And ARAM only accounts, that are outfitted with just the best champions for ARAM matches, kills the entire purpose of the mode.

INB4 The Aram Smurf accounts downvote brigade.

Yes, when aram was launched there were several threads pointing out how certain champs were disproportionally popolar in ARAM, even considering rerolls.

I believe Ashe is just flatout THE most common champion on ARAM. I think that's because basically everybody owns her.

The human brain doesn't properly comprehend random. It always looks for patterns even if there are none.

Truly random means you could play the same champion from now until servers shut down.

Jari3 votes

The problem is mostly just abuse of the system to increase your odds, which defeats the meaning of random in this case.

I mean, someone might even find a new champ they enjoy by opening up the whole pool. It just means those accounts that only own champs like Nid, Lux, and Varus don't get so much freeby poke almost every time.

Do you know what a Gauss curve is?

I'm just saying, Random explicitly means that there is a chance that you could get the same 5 champs in a row.

That being said, F**k ARAM only accounts. They make a fun game mode tryhard-ish.

I know the feeling of getting eve i believe 27(might have been 24 cant remember) times in a row on aram and yes that was random item 3151 I agree, even when I was aram only(little bit before new summoners rift map) i still unlocked all the champs in order(IP cuz more champs to play). Now that isn't to say that aram only accounts that only buy champs that are good are egregious however they are not fun to face all the time just in the format of today's aram setup. now in my opinion they should just make the default mode either with all champs unlocked for use, or they could make it so that there are bans to offset op champ chances.

The "randomness" of it is kinda funny though...I like alistar and all but when you have to waste re-rolls when you get him 3+ times in a row...it doesn't feel that random

bill843 votes

I feel the same about Annie.

Faceless Voidz2 votes

Why is that not random? Random doesn't mean you get a champion every 110 games (however many champions there are.)

Random - made, done, happening, or chosen without method or conscious decision.

Wimbledofy2 votes

that's exactly what makes it random. you getting a champion 3 times in a row is exactly what randomness would do.

Maratsune6 votes

No. I don't feel like this at all.

ARAM accounts are not a problem in the grand scheme of things; people can stop being such drama queens now.

The champions I don't own, I don't own for a reason. I don't enjoy playing them. I don't want my favourite fun and carefree game mode tainted by champions I HATE playing just so people can feel better about a problem that doesn't actually exist.

Edited for grammar pickiness.

Jari16 votes

It's not very random if you've selected exactly the best champions for the job. Therefor they might as well rename it to, "All mid" as there's little random for the ARAM accounts.

Maratsune3 votes

If somebody puts the effort into creating an account specifically for ARAM, with only ARAM champions, then by all means they should have their wins. They're clearly devoted enough. That being said, I doubt the chances of them winning in the long term differ much at all from any other account. There's still four other people that need to have decent champions for them to be successful.

ARAM accounts don't harm anybody. Somebody rolling Lux when they have 100 champions is no different from somebody rolling Lux with 10 champions. For some reason people have a really tough time grasping this concept, and it's hilarious.

Okay, first off, here's the difference.

The lux with 10 champions is 10 times more likely to get her compared to the one with 100 champions. Imagine if your marksman had a chance to do X10 damage instead of X2 with a crit. It's a stupid argument point.

Not to mention that the theme of ARAM is RANDOM. It's in the name. All Random All Mid. What's random about having a champ list of only champions extremely good in ARAM. Let's plug your argument back in again. It's still random, so I'm not going to get it 100% of the time, but would you rather 50% of the time, or 15% of the time? That's the difference.

The point of random is that you don't know what you're going to get. How is it fair to just increase your odds? Even if you're alone, you still increase the odds for your team because you're more likely to get someone like Lux, and less likely someone really bad.

Maratsune3 votes

Obviously the person with ten champions will have a higher chance of rolling a certain champion- that wasn't my point. I mean to the AVERAGE ARAM player, whom we can assume does not use an 'ARAM' account, it has no affect on their gameplay and experience.

Games are isolated events, and my point is that a Lux is a Lux no matter how many champions they have behind their belt. So unless you're queued against an ARAM account multiple times in a row, which is generally unlikely, their higher chances of rolling a good champion are completely irrelevant to the rest of the people in their games.

The only person that advantages or disadvantages from having an ARAM account are the ARAM accounts themselves, and as I said before, if they're willing to devote an entire account to one game mode, then they deserve that higher chance of winning. And besides, an 'ARAM' account to some people could just as likely be somebody's account who favours champions that happen to be good in ARAM. Preserving a strict interpretation of the word 'random' isn't worth taking champions that people enjoy away from potentially their favourite game mode- unless you're just anti-fun.

Jari6 votes

If I have two hats, and write down names on pieces of paper to put in them, which one do you think is more likely to have an exact one pulled out? The one with 10 names, or the one with 123 names.

I don't care if both players got Lux in this scenario. What I care about is the odds. The odds that, if we use our real world here, has costed shit tons of money or resources. You cheat a randomizer system's major flaw to increase your odds, and you say they deserve to win for it? It becomes less fun when every other ARAM game has a Nidalee Lux Varus combo once you start playing it a lot. How is that random? It goes against the point of the mode and has killed it for some.

And how are we taking away the fun out of the system by doing that? By your logic, you can still get the champs so it shouldn't hurt them right?

Also, don't use ARAM only accounts as an excuse for why they should get what they want. There were Dominion only accounts. Look what happened to them. They lost their mode and got paid with an icon. Having accounts for only one mode should not excuse certain actions being taken. If an ARAM only account is allowed to get away with that, then shouldn't Dominion only accounts get their whole thing back? Or are they different?

Maratsune3 votes

You don't seem to understand- the odds for rolling a good champ don't matter in the big picture. The only POSSIBLE way ARAM accounts could affect your enjoyment or success with ARAM is if you happened to queue against one every game, which is unlikely. In fact, it's very very likely that you will end up on both the enemy team AND same team of an ARAM account an EQUAL AMOUNT OF TIMES, therefore nullifying any affect they may have completely.

A Nidalee Lux Varus combination every other game is possible regardless of whether any ARAM accounts are involved at all- hence, 'Random.' The only people that ARAM accounts affect are the holders of those accounts, and even then the advantages they gain are nulled by the chance that any one of the enemy players happen to roll a champ that they're skilled at.

We aren't talking about keeping the game mode around or not. The removal of Dominion is completely irrelevant to this conversation, and now I know that you're grasping for straws when you don't even know what the straw is for.

Jari6 votes

You really don't know odds then.

Unless you, and I'm saying YOU, are an ARAM only account built like that, your opponent is more likely anyways, since they have 5 chances compared to your 4.

Continuing on here, this is, again, about abusing odds by putting them as much in your favor as possible. Not only does having accounts with just that defeat the reason of random, but it's also telling those that get more interested into it early that it's punishing and a mistake to unlock more things on your account, as you're only ruining your odds. It's stupid and not what the game in general should even be. Unlocking all of the champions in the list period not only makes it so that you don't need an ARAM account, not only makes games more diverse, but it can sometimes have a player find a character they enjoy even more that they don't have yet. Imagine someone getting, say, Viktor on ARAM. Let's say he's never had a chance to play this champion, as he's never got the chance during free week. Let's say he actually enjoys how viktor plays. Boom, he can go get the champion for when he's not on ARAM and he's enjoying himself.

By definition, random means, "made, done, happening, or chosen without method or conscious decision." Lowering your pool to the minimum best champions is using a method, and therefor defeats what random is. Oh look at that. A definition for you to read so you actually know what random means. What a surprise.

And I mentioned dominion because you were saying to give accounts for just a certain mode special treatment (by saying if they do that they deserve more wins.) If you don't enjoy the example, then I'm sorry, but don't use, "They made it for that so..." as an excuse.

Maratsune3 votes

Pulling out the dictionary- oof. Anywho- no matter what champions or how many champions the system has to choose from, it's still random. There's less chances of getting a worse champion, but the champion you get is still going to be technically random. Can't argue that it's random or not random, because it 100% is. (A randomly chosen apple out of 5 apples or a randomly chosen apple out of 1 apple and 99 oranges is still a randomly chosen apple)

Attempting to gain an advantage in a game mode through effort is something that happens in every facet of League- why should ARAM be any different? People who play more have more runes, thus they're more likely to succeed. People who have better internet connections can have faster response times, thus they're more likely to succeed. These aren't unfair advantages gained through trickery and bad design- they're an inherent part of the game. As should be those few that decide they'd like to have a better chance at winning in ARAM.

I admittedly mussed the team chances part up, however- it's kinda like the Monty Hall problem- that specific consideration always sort of goes over my head. But I digress- the odds still aren't too badly against the average non-ARAM account player.

A mode where people can play champions they may not otherwise get to play is a nice idea, but whether it should be shoehorned into a pre-existing game more or worked around more cohesively in a new one is up for debate. It may work quite well in ARAM, and if that was the intention behind a potential redesign I would have no qualms with it.

Or you could just... increase minimum required to like 30-40ish? (with or without free week stuff idk)

JVP153 votes

But why are you excluding new people? 30-40 champions are a lot. Either a lot of money, or a lot of time, and to play a game that is supposed to be entirely for fun and relaxed, that much time and effort seems a bit excessive. I wouldn't exactly call myself a new player, but I do enjoy ARAM, and I definitely don't want to have to have 30-40 champions just to play it.

Astôlfo2 votes

I mean, I don't personally mind the ARAM issue either way. It's just people keep complaining about ARAM-only accounts, and I thought this could be a solution. Or, if we go with this idea, I think it's best to keep newly released champs off the rotation for at least a few weeks, to promote sales and such.

Faceless Voidz3 votes

That's not a solution, that's banning part of the player base from a queue.

Alëk1 votes

Well league isn't supposed to be entirely fun and relaxed. Fun obviously, but league is all about its intense high octane moments. Sure the lane phase and first 15 minutes can be slow (especially the higher elo you get) but generally league is sold on its teamfights. ARAM is nothing but teamfights. So there is no "relaxed" in it.

fatyboomboom1 votes

the concept of what is high octane and relaxed are different for each person and it could all be found in aram, just depends on whose playing.

thinking about it, logically, you shouldn't even be emotionally invested in aram games to begin with since the key factor in lol games is team comp and how well ya play it. knowing that ya realize the biggest factor of how a game can flow is already out of your hands for the most part.

That is it should be since it should be random selection. Since that can be fudged though with aram only accounts you get players that can bend the spirit of the game mode and spoil it for others ( also the whole point of this thread).

To be fair, if I ever get Udyr or WW I WILL reroll them, but I will see aram accounts all too often.

fatyboomboom1 votes

why reroll udyr or ww? they suck major balls early on, not gonna lie. but if your patient and wait for some kills, items, and a few turrets to fall their skills become impressive if your building right. just gotta wait for better times.

captainkaiger1 votes

So what you're saying is they get good once they get a few items? And let me counter your point with my own, I have no interest in learning how to play Udyr, and I only really know how to go AP WW.

Solo que MMR doesn't effect it, ARAM functions differently than Solo Que different skills shine. So yes, silvers who spam the shit out of ARAM and do well will have a hidden MMR that is equivalent to a diamond who spams the shit out of solo que and does well.

What if we at least made it so if you use a reroll in ARAM, all champions are available for the rerolled champion.

That way Riot doesn't lose out on people purchasing champions (which I think is their argument for not doing this?) and ARAM only account will have a harder time getting that perfect team comp.

fatyboomboom1 votes

thats not much of a difference from the original idea and it doesn't address the initial problem of aram only accounts. haveing access to the entire roster from the get go means no one gets a shot at their personal favorites roster for aram. randomness is restored and riot shouldn't care players have access to the whole roster there since they can't assure using a particular champ repeatedly or even play it in proper game play (this game mode is random silliness or it should be).
