Montecristo talking about why we need Sandbox Mode

He's honestly such a smart and intelligent guy. I'm surprised he's not a more central part of Riot. He could be if he really wanted to. Anyway, listen to what he's saying. He's making a LOT of good points.

The problem with Monte is, he is VERY intelligent, and he tends to know what he is talking about, but he isn't a more highly regarded figure, or a part of Riot, because he is also as much of a prick as he is smart.

While I personally have no issue with it, and I think he is a cool guy, he rubs a LOT of people the wrong way, including Riot sometimes. He is outspoken, which can be good, but has no sense of picking his battles, and says things very bluntly, to the point of having no issue calling people out or calling people dumbasses. Again, I have no issue with it, but I know why others wouldn't and sometimes don't like it.

It's sort of why no one takes thorin seriously anymore, because he just talked so much crap and people got tired of digging through the attitude to get to the amazing points he has. Monte just seems to have turned cynical the past year especially, so he is off putting sometimes, and is very negative towards most things western (which is why I'm surprised he even bothered to buy into being a part owner for an LCS team).

Love the guy to death, but he has zero filter.

things like these are best said bluntly, the more blunt you are the better and the less sugar coating the better. I have no idea who Thorin but the only reason people won't take you seriously is if you talk crap and have nothing to back it up and nothing more. Monte gives his point of view and why he thinks things will help in the long run and when he sees something that is dumb and stupid he will call it out because it's a dumb and stupid comment. He even admits that things might be more difficult than he thinks and that he is biased to what would make e-sports better, and there needs to be less people just wanting to get the good side of everyone and not want to hurt people's feelings when it comes to things like these. He likes competitive things and NA and EU for a long time have been overshadowed by Korea and China in the competitive side of things so of course he is going to be biased to the way eastern teams do things as opposed to western ones

Nice observation, mate. Never though about him that way.

But then, I believe saying things as they are, bluntly is the best way to criticize. Sugar coating might be misunderstood as "everything is fine, proceed with your bullshit"

Apparently a sandbox mode will help improve your mechanics too much but to be honest climbing the ladder is 20% mechanics and 80% game knowledge.

I peaked at diamond 5 and I play on a 20 fps computer, you can easily go 20/0 in lane and still completely lose the game because you have no idea on what you're doing.

I enjoyed monte and his opinion on sandbox and listened to the whole thing, he completely explains why sandbox should be a thing and I agree with him.

Cosnirak1 votes

I highly disagree with you. I feel like its the other way around, 80% mechanics and 20% game knowledge. 20fps in a fight is just enough to do really well. I get about 18fps walking around with no action happening and anywhere from ~3-8fps in most fights. The difference is massive.

Both aspects have strong minimum baselines once you get out of bronze to advance though and plateau at different elos multiple times. In silver and gold you have to actually learn to take objectives but until plat and up you don't tend to learn how to actually do so well, you just know they matter. But no matter how much you understand the fundamental tactics of vision control and objectives you will lose every time if you can't win the fights those objectives cause.

Back when Enchanted Armor was a 2-point tier 1 defensive mastery I saw a diamond adc with 2 points in it because like so many others he didn't realize it only benefited from BONUS armor and mr, not base. I've seen lcs players make the wrong choices and especially lazy choices in regards to runes and masteries multiple times. Monte himself could go on for a long while about poor itemization choices he's seen pros make. Just last night I saw 2 people in a high master tier game make it clear they have no idea how the new Fiora works because they don't read the patch notes or other stuff like it. I make better dragon and baron calls than half the pro teams.

Good players know general and vague strategic ideas. But their attention to detail and their game knowledge depth is often severely lacking. Missed skill shots do 0 damage no matter what your build is. It's really hard to take the dragon when your whole team is dead.

mechanics can only get you so far. There is such a thing as skill ceilings. In a 5v5 team ranked game, mechanics is actually important.

But game knowledge is by far the best way to win or lose. Its everything about abiltiies, items, champs powerspike, champ dmg output--when to tower dive, when to baron, when to split push, who to target, when to peel, how to cs undertower (which is game knowledge) champ select for comp or counter comp (for the enemy) which summoners, which runes, which masteries, trading patterns. abilities maxing knowledge, what to do when ahead? when behind? when to roam, how to max your farm at all time, obj control, warding spots, Match ups, etc..etc..etc...

Mechanics is just about how you use your AA, Q-W-E-R and when and how you flash.

If you know nothing how to win, what needs to be done, how your champ works and how the enemy interact with your champ, how good is mechanics if you dunno your output?

some people will say they know all this: yet, most of the time, they do something, it works but they dont know why. they would say: well we are stronger or blah blah.

Game knowledge is very low till mid plat. Most streamers will say that its decent only at masters.

wanna know the difference between bronze and masters? winning. You should see what happens nightblue or imaqtpie when they arent in their role. They are MUCH worse mechanically, but they still win because they know their limits, what not to do and how to win with their team.

Just reread your statement I disagreed with, specifically "climbing the ladder is 20% mechanics and 80% game knowledge." And I gotta say, you're right. I wasn't thinking of it in terms of climbing the ladder specifically, that part went in one ear and out the other (metaphorically). I was thinking of it in terms of average players compared to good players. Mechanics will largely get you out of bronze but after that you mostly stop running into people who have trouble right clicking you. :p

There's a huge mechanics minimum requirement though (to climb ladder) and if you can't get past it no amount of game knowledge is gonna let you win. Which is where I'm stuck largely because I play on a VERY crappy computer and live in Florida. I try hard to mitigate it mostly by playing certain champions for whom that mechanical minimum is a lot lower but 4fps in a right is still 4fps. If things go as planned soon I'll have a new computer and the NA servers will be in Chicago and instead of slowly climbing silver I'll be hitting plat with ease and maybe even diamond before the season ends.

Beoridas1 votes

cant say you dont have ambitions thats for sure. These elos arent necessarily what you think they are tho. Their requirements are very different from each other and you need to adapt your game constantly. By experience, and talking with a lot of diamonds players--Gold is by far the worst and the hardest to climb out of IF you deserve it that is. Bronze is easy and silver is easy. Just people to carry. You can solo it if you know exactly what to do.

In gold however: the desire of everyone to sabotage everything just to be a fool , just to prove points, just because they dont want to listen--some people genuinely wants to do everything to lose because that want to be right, they want the kills, they want the game to be about themselves otherwise its the jungler's fault etc...

plat players are individuals that are toxic and egocentric. They will make usually bad calls and bad plays but are normally mechanically sound and understand the basics about what goes wrong and what needs to be done. But usually wont act much about it.

diamond is a huge jungle to describe. Diamond 5-4-3-2-1 is a whole universe per division lol. hence the reason why they made masters tier in the first place.

Nope. I'm dia 4 and my mechanics are extremely poor; and I play champions with little mechanics (Nasus, Yi) -though Yi actually has some skill in dodging skillshots or targeted spells, timing W to tank or aa-reset - I'm just very good at managing the waves of minions so I don't get deny/farm safely most of the time (I main top), make the calls I think best, usually put pressure by splitpushing because I usually play duellist champions and that's it. Diamond's not hard, you don't need mechanics. Just.. game knowledge, logic.

Cosnirak1 votes

"I'm dia 4 and my mechanics are extremely poor"

According to you. I'm pretty sure they're better than almost all the people who don't even play ranked or almost never play it and are in bronze at the very least. Which is basically all you need to carry you far in ranked with the right champions and a good understanding of the game. I know all about playing the right champions to not need good mechanics. I main Morgana mid and as long as you can outsmart them with Q it's pretty easy.

3-8 fps means you are literally only able to use like 1 spell before completely being frozen for the rest of the fight

Nice lie tho.

Cosnirak1 votes

No it doesn't mean that. It means 3-8 frames per second. Fights are not .1 seconds long. It's absolutely the truth. I play on a laptop that's over 8 years old, has windows vista, an integrated video card, yet 3gb of ram. I have League open (obviously) and sometimes I get on ventrillo and voice chat with that if my friends want to but close everything else. I can't even get in a skype call while playing because it lowers my fps too much.

I have issues hitting multiple abilities or items really fast, it won't register some of the key presses some times if I do. And if I play for too long or stream video a bunch before playing my fps will be too low to play even by my standards because the computer will get too hot and slow down. And yeah I've turned all the settings down as low as they go except resolution which I have at either the 2nd or 3rd lowest setting (I forget which). The lowest resolution cuts off your vision way too hard sadly.

Sometimes when I play ranked I alt tab out during the loading screen and open task manager and use it to close the league out of game client. Gets me another 1-5 fps or so. But sadly it means I don't get a post game screen and have to log back in as soon as the game is over. The worst part is not being able to report people.

Complete lie, I used to play with settings on high with shadows and would get around 10 fps or less and that was literally unplayable because you constantly freeze.

Also you're silver so are you disagreeing with me on what it takes to climb? I climbed to diamond 5 solely with game knowledge.

Also game knowledge is what gives you basic fundamental mechanics because of timers,cd's,calculations etc which is why game knowledge is needed to climb.

Cosnirak1 votes

"Complete lie, I used to play with settings on high with shadows and would get around 10 fps or less and that was literally unplayable because you constantly freeze."

You're so wrong. 10 fps is not freezing or unplayable, it's visible skipping in the visuals. If you're freezing at 10 fps something more than low fps is going on and the game is lying about your fps (I've had it do that when the connection was screwing up).

"Also you're silver so are you disagreeing with me on what it takes to climb? I climbed to diamond 5 solely with game knowledge."

That's some serious hyperbole there. To the point that it makes responding to it with actual conversation pointless.

I've played league of legends 3 years now with low FPS, i'm fully aware that you're basically bullshitting when you say you get 3-8 in teamfights.

There is literally NOTHING you can do in a teamfight with 3-8 fps.

also it makes sense, I know what it takes to climb seeing as how I achieved diamond 5 earlier in the season while you are silver.

so my point still stands, game knowledge above mechanics

Cosnirak1 votes

"There is literally NOTHING you can do in a teamfight with 3-8 fps."

That makes no sense. At that fps things blink around a lot but it's still way better than nothing. You can still cast (mostly) and right clicking people works often enough. It does really suck, and I do worse because of it. But I can do a lot more than nothing. As Morgana I try to flash in, hit R, and then Zhonya's. Even at low fps that's pretty easy and effective.

To be clear it's usually like 8-12 before everyone is casting stuff and on top of each other at once. The really low fps like 3 only tends to last for about 3-4 seconds before things are on cooldown and at least one or two people die. When I adc at the very least I make sure to right click a decent target a moment or two before it gets real bad.

Also in silver it's pretty rare there are actually 10 people throwing out abilities and autos all at the same time. Fights are usually 7 or so people and the rest join in a little late, it's because people are bad but hey it helps me. My lowest fps usually occurs when a game is about to end. For some reason the nexus turrets REALLY make my computer cry. But around the nexus is one of the easiest places to land Morgana Qs and honestly making people dodge them is pretty powerful too. Also I try to win by overwhelming force, not close fights at a nexus.

I seriously do a lot to make up for my crap fps in team fights, like avoiding them or staying at the edge of them unless I have my flash-ult-zhonya's combo up. I don't understand why you'd think I'd lie about that. And it should be obvious that yeah I'm silver and you're diamond, but at least partly because my fps is that bad. Yeah it screws me in team fights a bit. But your hyperbole about being able to do 'literally nothing' is bullshit.

"so my point still stands, game knowledge above mechanics"

Climbing out of bronze/silver becomes very easy once you realize that you need to guide your team and abuse those mistakes that low elo players make, you arent going to win a game when 4 people on your team have no idea on what they are doing and you can't lead them.

only at high plat-diamond will you have to have above decent mechanics to start climbing because you start playing competent players.

There's a reason why LCS teams can snowball advantages against players with equal mechanics and that's due to how they use their game knowledge.

Honestly I feel like having a sandbox mode won't affect the skill floor at all. It will certainly affect the ceiling but not the floor. Casual players who want to remain casual players will be playing against other casual players who similarly don't want to use the sandbox mode, while players who want to invest their time in a sandbox mode will be playing with other players who do the same thing because the skill level of different groups of players (those who use sandbox vs those who don't) will remain groups and there will be minimal crossover after a certain amount of time.

I am a Silver 4 player who would love to become good enough to play in Platinum or Diamond but I don't have the time to invest thousands of hours in improving my mechanics. A sandbox mode would exponentially decrease the amount of time it would take to perfect mechanical ability.

I would love a sandbox mode.

I feel LoL (like many current games) is a lose to learn experience. That's not good. A sandbox would help. Teaching people the basics of the game would also help too.

I think you underestimate the pressure people put on each other. I don't think it'd be so bad that that alone is reason not to have a sandbox mode, but it WILL cause issues at times and come with that cost.

Lemme explain the point Riot was getting at without the bullshit they seem obsessed to apply even when they have a good point:

  1. Sandbox mode isn't fun. Playing games IS fun.
  2. The game is totally balanced around player inconsistency and fuckups. Champions like, Lee Sin, Ezreal, Azir, and Thresh would be broken as shit if players could efficiently practice them to a high enough level.

You eat a Lee Sin Q? An insec WILL happen. Ezreal's damage will shoot through the roof because he'd rarely miss. Azir... fucking Azir. These inevitable balance problems will force them to get gutted to a point where they will be even more unplayable for people who don't grind them out in sandbox.

Desiderium1 votes

I don't see the fairness in the logic that "if a champion can be practiced to a certain point, they need to be nerfed." That's a problem with the design of the champion, NOT a need for a nerf. Sandbox mode is what this game needs.

TotalJerk1 votes

This is what happens in a world where some champions have ceilings and others don't, unfortunately. It was a bad idea in the first place to gate a champion's power exclusively with difficulty, but it already happened.

As I feared MonteChristo misses the point. "If the skill floor for fundamentals requires extensive time spent in sandbox mode that's kind of scary." Monte doesn't seem to get this at all.

Monte is a competitive player, even if he doesn't compete at the highest levels himself he has that drive to do better. For him getting better at a game is highly rewarding, even if he's the only one who sees it. For a lot of people the desire to get better and the reward for doing so is far less. This means they don't want to go into sandbox mode to practice anything, they just want to play and have fun doing so. Monte's solution to people being expected to get better with a sandbox mode who don't want to is simply "then don't do it." But as Riot knows all too well, that just doesn't work all the time.

Communities revolve greatly around expectations, usually without realizing it. It's very useful to do so, especially in terms of saving time. We expect adults to speak the primary language of the country they live in at a certain level of competency, because when they don't it's highly problematic. We are all subject to expectations, some reasonable, others not. We're expected to not defecate on the floor of our friend's house when we visit them. Breaking expectations can have negative consequences. We apply pressure to meet societal expectations all the time, and that pressure affects how people behave and how they feel. If you defecate on your friend's floor because you just felt like it you're probably going to be shamed and never allowed over again.

If the League community starts to expect players to meet certain levels of skill that can only be met by spending time in sandbox mode that can easily become a problem. No matter how much the people applying that pressure might be in the wrong to have that expectation, it can still have a very strong effect. This is what Riot is afraid of. Riot doesn't want players pressuring each other to do something they might dislike doing to get better at League that isn't just playing more League.

Is that reason enough to not have a sandbox mode? Riot isn't 100% sure about that. But it's certainly something to consider greatly, as once let loose they can't just take away without that too having a huge cost.

Actually, monte barely plays the game. He is silver 5 and makes no attempts to climb. He feels you don't need to be a good player to be a good analyst, and he is evidence of that.

It's not about how much he plays. It's about how he thinks and feels about games when he does play them. He has a strong drive for improvement and competitiveness and that extends beyond one game and even gaming in general.

Biffolo1 votes

No, he's literally said on videos before that he dosen't give a damn about his own skill. He feels it has no impact on his job, so he dosen't do it.

Cosnirak1 votes

You're completely missing the point AND you're wrong. He doesn't care about how far he gets in ranked in League. But he does care about his own skill as he even mentions in the video in this thread. It's about his drive to do better. Right now he focuses on his casting and his team ownership. He works hard to do those things well because that's the kind of person he is.

But I'm not wrong. He has stated time and time again that skill is not tied to analyst skills. He thinks it might actually hinder him, because it would take time away from analyzing games.

Cosnirak1 votes

I wasn't talking about that part. He does care about his own skill. He just accepts that he's not that good.

Biffolo1 votes

He reaslly dosen't though. As I said before he says its COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO HIS ANALYTICAL ABILITY. He also thinks playing more might hurt him.

"COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO HIS ANALYTICAL ABILITY"

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with that. NOTHING. I'm not criticizing or questioning his ability to analyze the game one bit.

Biffolo1 votes

You are missing my point. That's WHY he dosen't play, as he has stated.

Cosnirak1 votes

You are missing the point. I don't care that he doesn't play. It doesn't change or relate to my point. Let it go.

Biffolo1 votes

Your point was that "he cares about improving". Which he doesn't

Cosnirak1 votes

He does. Just not when it comes to playing League specifically. He talks about improving stuff all the time. He's that kind of person in GENERAL. He used to want to improve at playing League, but now his League concerns are elsewhere and he strives to improve those things instead. Like his casting and how pro teams treat their players.

Completely missing the point. This is over.

no one even knows who that person is

Just because you don't know him doesn't mean no one does.

He doesn't look as creepy IRL as he does on OGN.

Riot dosen't want to give koreans a sandbox mode.
