Riot, if you truly want diversity in different roles - AP itemization needs an edit

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on my points.

I am speaking from what I have seen.

For the past few seasons, AD has had a strong advantage over AP. Despite small outliers like APC Ziggs, AD has always been the most dominant side of league in terms of selection. The reason being that AD champions not only have a panoply of damage items, but a diverse array of defensive items against AP champions. On the contrary, AP champions have very little resistance to AD champions unless they are a tank.

AD champions are allowed to retain damage and survivability while AP champions do no have the luxury of such itemization. There are very few items they can take to sustain through AD burst - especially since a large majority are not melee. For example, an ADC or toplaner can take a hexdrinker but an AP champion cannot get a sterak's gage because they not only lose damage but are ranged.

Before anyone says Zhonyas, notice that Guardian Angel is AD reflection of Zhonyas and both offer a stasis effect. AD compositions already have access to the stasis effect which should have been unique to AP champions. It shows AD champions, simply by itemization, can do most of an AP champion's job much better.

Do you need AoE damage? Runaans offers it. How about burst? ADCs and Assassins give it. Waveclear? Shiv allows that. Crowd Control? Almost all champions offer some form of CC.

Riot said they wanted lane diversity but realize that most mages are played botlane due to how much better AD champions are in the midlane. Lucian mid was a prime example of how weak AP was.

In addition, most mages played botlane are only played botlane if they are either broken/buffed or have a ruthless early game. Prime examples are a Lucian+Veigar lane or Miss Fortune+Brand. These are just examples.

Sure - AP champions still offer more AoE than most champions but they have way less resistances and item choices that it's sad. AD compositions are punished far less than AP compositions. Why? Because full AD compositions can still burst the midlaner, support, or ADC while full AP compositions have to face so many magic resist options, hexdrinker, GA, steraks, and mercurials.

Here is what is needed for AP champions:

  • An increase in item diversity for champion kits which I can provide examples for
  • Alternate AP choices for AD items (E.G. GA and Zhonyas)
  • Resistances for AD compositions to punish the common full AD comps we always see

It's NEEDED at this point with how much AD compositions outclass AP. You even said it yourself Riot - Ziggs APC was a cool meta and you'd like to see more of it.

I will give my suggestions. Please note, numbers are filler and I hope people can offer better suggestions. I just want to give a general guideline at least:

  • [Armor of Life]

  • Tier 3 anti-AD burst item that offers a small amount of AP and is built off a tier 2 anti-AD burst item named [Heart of Life].

  • This item is a mirror of Maw.

  • [Rune of Freedom]

  • Tier 3 item that offers AP and removes crowd control. Builds off of QSS.

  • Offers armor and AP

  • Mirror of Mercurial Scimitar

  • [Blasting Wand]

  • I suggest changing Blasting Wand to offer scaling magic penetration.

  • The change above is due to the fact that serated dirk offers a power spike AP champions significantly lack.

  • AD itemization is also cheaper sadly.

  • [Rylai's]

  • I don't know why this item was gutted. I suggest reverting it WITH the fact that the slow only applies once for a full second and has a cooldown per target.

  • You could make it work like Glacial Augment if you get what I am saying.

  • [Cloak of the Vampiric King]

  • Offers spell vamp for single target auto-attacks that apply magic damage

  • This would require Lichbane to do a significant amount of lifesteal - percent of spell vamp would be small (less than or equal to 5%)

  • [Fragment of Targon]

  • Ancient relic that applies 2 or 3% of someone's total AP to their auto-attacks

The last two suggestions are ideas I'm not even sure about and I doubt they're healthy. However, these suggestions are for thought.

This.

I am TIRED of playing most AP champs now because they just feel lacking in power.

It feels like EVERY mage these days strives to build at least 2 of these items every game:

item 3165 item 3135 item 3151 item 3157 item 3102

and the only reason for this is because it feels like there really are NO other options at least from my perspective.

even the RUNES feel heavily catered more towards AD champions than AP champions and this is something they were trying to make so that the players felt they were really in control of their playstyle.

Magic resist on a mage? you have three Viable options, out of about 14 finished items. Chances are your champion can't fully utilize one of them are HIGH cough item 3174 cough

Completely agree.

The sorcery tree, which should be catered towards AP champions, also as higher AD scaling as well. Understandably it's due to itemization, but often it is just as easy for AD champions to get the same numeric value as AP champs for their primary damage stat for runes like comet.

As a Mid Mage main:

[Armor of Life]

Tier 3 anti-AD burst item that offers a small amount of AP and is built off a tier 2 anti-AD burst item named [Heart of Life]. This item is a mirror of Maw.

Yes Please

[Rune of Freedom] Tier 3 item that offers AP and removes crowd control. Builds off of QSS. Offers armor and AP Mirror of Mercurial Scimitar

This item would need to give Mr, not armor as QSS gives MR. Other then that, Yes Please

[Blasting Wand]

I suggest changing Blasting Wand to offer flat magic penetration. The change above is due to the fact that serated dirk offers a power spike AP champions significantly lack. AD itemization is also cheaper sadly.

This wouldn't work, MPen is flat where as Lethality is scaling, say you got a dirk at level 1, it would only give 6 Flat Armor Pen. Simply Getting Sorc Shoes and Haunting Guise is basically doing true damage, blasting wand doesn't need to be changes, at least not like this.

[Rylai's]

I don't know why this item was gutted. I suggest reverting it WITH the fact that the slow only applies once for a full second and has a cooldown per target. You could make it work like Glacial Augment if you get what I am saying.

I think they either need to give 10 AP, 100 HP or give it 10% CDR and this item is a good item again, (I'd prefer the CDR.

[Cloak of the Vampiric King]

Offers spell vamp for single target auto-attacks that apply magic damage This would require Lichbane to do a significant amount of lifesteal - percent of spell vamp would be small (less than or equal to 5%)

The really just need to take Gunblades passive and put it on a different item lol.

Other items need to be built, and other items need to have stats moved around.

And as always bring back DFG so AP Assassins and Nuke/Burst Mages can reign supreme again.

Maybe change Liandry's passive and make an alternative item with Liandry's current passive? (Since currently, Liandry is like BORK due to its %HP dmg)

I like how Liandyrs for that though, it allows you to burst squishies and slowly drain tanks.
