Why I've stopped playing ranked.

Before I get blasted by everyone for saying ranked is rewarding once you get past >>Insert rank here<< know that I understand your viewpoint. However, ranked play seems to get increasingly toxic and increasingly feels more like a tedious chore than anything else.

Now, I'm only Silver 5 but I've been playing for quite a while. I know that I'm where I'm meant to be at my current skill level and I constantly try to improve on my mechanics on all of my champions, not just one. Lately though, I find myself doing less and less ranked play and more and more normals with people I've met throughout my years of playing video games. Not just leagues, but multiple other games. I've made friends all over that enjoy to play Leagues on our downtime. Many I've met from World of Warcraft, some from Minecraft, some from my days of Rust and DayZ. Others are friends I've made that just happen to play League of Legends over the course of my life.

Why that wall of text is relevant.

Now, the whole thing about my friends seems rather pointless when the thread is about why I've slowed down on how much I do ranked. But here's where it comes into play / relevance. I've been severely dialing back my amount of ranked games and having actual fun playing the game going into games with my friends and completely disregarding the meta and just having fun with our picks and playing for the sake of playing the game.

I can't get myself to do that in ranked. Anytime you want to try something people aren't accustomed to, it becomes an immediate downward spiral of toxicity and anger. It's just no longer fun for me to play ranked and try to climb the ladders. Sure, I could try and get my friends to do ranked 5's, but it's not as fun to play against people getting super, super into the game as they seem to just trash talk us for having fun playing the game and not winning.

You should rethink and consider ranked 5s. You don't or shouldn't have to deal with toxicity. :)

We have and it was the scenario at the bottom every single time. We all wanted to have fun while doing it and it was nothing but flaming from the enemy team every single time we did it.

You're missing the point. Play normals with friends and enjoy the game. If ranked is super annoying for you, don't do it. A rank is just a reward for the people who are willing to put up with playing ranked because they enjoy it. If you don't like it, don't do it.

A couple thoughts:

  1. I've experienced what you're talking about. I got flamed at quite a lot in my first few ranked games, and you'll get flamed more the worse you play. That said, after about five games I learned that the mute button is my friend. At first I thought hey, I have a thick skin, I can handle some complaints from my teammates. Later I learned that as soon as one of my teammates said something that irritated me, I should just mute them. (I also play with all chat disabled.) I started enjoying the game a lot more after that.

  2. Still, you're totally right. If you don't enjoy ranked, don't play it! I personally enjoy ranked and enjoy taking the game seriously, and while I hate the phrase "it's just a game" (note the emphasis), LoL remains a game, and it's not worth it if you're not having fun.

This isn't my first few ranked games. I have roughly 500 games played in Ranked alone. Not counting the 1200 games outside of ranked.

To clarify, the main difference between my first few ranked games and now is that I've become fairly liberal in my use of the mute button, not that I get flamed at substantially less.

I too hate ranked, but I somehow managed to trudge my way through Bronze 1 to Gold 5 for the season rewards.

You are absolutely correct, if it weren't for the rewards, I would never touch ranked in a million years. The game mode is just frustrating, people can't enjoy it when there is so much at stake.

However, I don't recommend that you give up on ranked entirely (for the rewards of course.) Getting from Silver V to Gold V is actually a lot faster than you would expect.

It's not fast, actually. I was placed in Bronze 2, climbed to Gold 3...and then something changed. Ever since then it's been a rash of afk'ers, dc's, rage quitters and trolls. I am at the point, back in Silver 2, where I'm getting at least one of those every two games. It's something I've been keeping track of. It is an average, and sometimes I'll have five games in a row without, but other times I'll have five games in a row with. I didn't play much last season, but the season before was nowhere near this horrible.
