How could AP blitz be bad?

I mean if he's meant to be a support, why in the hell does he have 100% AP scaling on grab and static field? I mean, what about his kit makes AP blitz bad?

Really, nothing. AP Blitz is good. It's just not played over support Blitz because the hook is op in the bot lane setting.

Honestly, though, I think that Blitz being a support may be left over from back in the day, when bot lane META was a melee bruiser (which Blitz would play) and anything else, literally anyone in the game.

Also, during this time, Blitzcrank's hook was actually targeted. Not even kidding. But even that is not the most broken thing to ever exist. Original TF was. His entire team got free crit chance and his E was the teleport from his ult, except global range. His ult would make his E no longer have a cast time as well as revealing and slowing everyone. Oh, and gold card was AoE. Same cooldown, same late game stun duration. 2 second AoE targeted stun on a 4 second cooldown.

ok, you gotta wonder what drugs Riot allowed in the office for that version of TF to EVER happen.

What was supposed to "balance" the gold card was that the different cards would have different times to pick. Blue (which in those days let you pick another card right away as well as being the highest damage, would shred turrets) was the easiest to pick. Red was next down, but with it being only slightly higher damage than gold card and a slow instead of a stun, there was really no reason to pick it over gold. Finally was gold card, being the hardest to lock, it had the smallest amount of time that it would hover before switching back to blue.

Really, it's because Blitz is a pretty mediocre champion unless put into the hands of a Blitzcrank god. He has absurdly long cooldowns, pretty darn high mana costs, he has melee range, he's got no real form of mobility, other than something that is basically pointless at most stages of the game, and is really not good for getting out of trouble after you've gone head-first into the enemy. I really never understood him as a tank either because unless his team gets ahead, he really isn't all that hard to kill - I'll have to check his base stats and scalings because something about him doesn't seem very tanky despite being a dude made entirely out of metal.

Not to mention that we also have to remember that the damage scaling on his knockup is completely AD for some reason, and his passive is just a small shield, which is very strange for a full-AP burst mage. Most burst mages are ranged, first off, and for those exceptions like Ekko and Katarina, they have a way to get to their target. While Blitz does have his rocket grab, he's really screwed if he misses it too many times. Also, these other mages have ranged tools that don't kill your mana, and can help you either push a wave or CS without blowing a major cooldown.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure these are the reasons why people tend to prefer Thresh as a support - his cooldowns and mana costs aren't nearly as invasive, and, while he isn't particularly mobile, he can make a carry much more mobile with the use of his lantern, which he can also use to save people. As Blitzcrank, if you engage and your carry doesn't have the damage or mobility to either waste the enemy or get away, that Blitz is going to peace the fuck out, and you're going to be dead in the water.

The short answer is that it works, but most of the time it doesn't work as well as other mages in the mid lane in most metas.

Currently it would be because everyone is tanky so the can eat his combo with no problems. He can't easily get to the adc to burst. All the shielding and damage reduction in game.
