How does deathfire Touch interact with single target spells which apply a DOT?

Deathfire touch is supposed to apply its own damage-over-time effect to accompany single target spells. The duration and damage are halved for DOT spells. Brand, for example, has Q and single-target-variant E which both would apply DFT for the full damage, but then his passive, which also applies DFT, is also applied at the same time. DFT continually refreshes but does not stack, so does the weaker form of DFT (applied by brand's passive) immediately override the stronger form (applied by the Q or E itself), or does the strong form run for full duration and then the weak form gets applied at the end?

Thank you in advanced for an informed response

It's not actually weaker for DoT spells. Deathfire Touch deals half the damage over 1.5s, which ends up dealing the same damage after 3s.

i.e. (50 damage over 1.5s) * 2 = (100 damage over 3s)

The only really difference is that after the DoT ends, Deathfire Touch will stop dealing damage after 1.5s instead of 3s.

There is no strong form or weak form. They both do the same damage, but Brand's passive allows him to keep it burning for longer than it would otherwise.

The tooltip for deathfire touch reads: "...(Area of effect and damage over time abilities apply half of this damage over 1.5 seconds instead)." When I referred to a strong/weak form, I was referring to the damage from DFT, not from Brand's passive.

Huh. That is a good question.

Most likely is it will burn for the normal amount for the duration of the single target spell, then refresh when the target takes damage again. Meaning it will deal single target damage for 3 seconds, and then DoT damage if the DoT is still on the target. Meaning Brand's passive should refresh it with the DoT damage twice, 3 and 4 seconds after his Q or E, meaning his spells end up getting double the benefit of DFT.

I have a feeling dots will do half damage the next patch change. DFT just is way better for those spells.

It deals the same damage for each tic, it just deals less damage over the duration.

So if you had 120 AP, each tic would deal 5 damage (half second tics), but the single target effect would last for 3 seconds, dealing 30 damage over the full course of the damage, whereas the DOT effect would last for 1.5 seconds, dealing 15 damage.

For Brand, though, his passive lasts longer than 3 seconds, so the single target effect would have already dissipated. Instead, the passive's DOT causes the effect of Deathfire Touch to last for a whopping 5.5 seconds, dealing about 66(+36.7% AP) magic damage over 5.5 seconds for landing a single spell on Brand. So that's ridiculous, considering you are also dealing 8% Max Health over 4 seconds, and if you have Liandry's Torment and Rylai's Crystal Scepter, you are also dealing 24% of their current health as magic damage over 7 seconds. Not to mention the fact that you landed a spell. Which, you know, also deals damage.
