Meta-changes, item changes, and changes to those specific champions. Funny how that has an effect on their power.

Hecarim is 'OP' because he became FoTM and the fact that until recently he was rarely seen in the Top lane especially at low elo so very few people know how to deal with him.

First time I played vs a hecarim top I was comprehensively destroyed, literally couldn't do a thing, fed him immediately from the start and he snowballed and rekt everyone. So I decided to do the only logical thing - Cry to Rito to get him nerfed Look at his kit, play him myself for a bit and try and understand what his strengths and weaknesses are. I quickly realised he was a very fun champ who wasn't overpowered but is able to snowball easily if his opponent is clueless or doesn't understand the matchup. I realised what I was doing wrong vs Hecarim and adjusted accordingly.

Many people have no idea how to play vs hecarim properly and I constantly have to facepalm when I see players standing in the middle of enemy minion waves trading with Hecarim (This is what I was doing when in the match where I got completely destroyed) or chasing him through minions to hit him with auto attacks when all hecarim has to do is Q and kite for days.

Of course easiest solution is to just reactively nerf Hecarim immediately until he goes away again back to the jungle (where he sucks) and we can all go back to using the same champs in the same positions once again.

How Exciting!

Flavour of several months across all regions. Slightly different. Your points are valid - learning to play against a champion - but, after this fairly long time period nerfs may be justified. They are also very small nerfs - not designed to destroy him, just tone him down.

I would also like to point out that there haven't been thousands of complaints (at least on the Boards). This isn't a whining problem.

basically poking hecarim down and making him waste his mana or anything that will catch him will make him go behind.Kennen is like a perfect pick against hecarim mainly because has energy, good damage at early levels, can set up ganks quite nicely. these basically any champs like kennen can make a hecarim lane a hell he will lose his turret first unless the kennen was very bad and if hecarims jungler doesnt come and help him ull be fine

Rampage Mana cost reduced to 20 / 23 / 26 / 29 / 32 from 24 / 26 / 28 / 30 / 32. Spirit of Dread Healing cap against minions/monsters increased to 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 from 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180.

OP buff. Considering he's seeing play at top the most.

GaleWinUnleashed4 votes

All thanks to the tank buffs. Now that they're viable (and perhaps rather more than viable) they can be balanced with relative ease.

BluePolarizer4 votes

only jungle tanks and Hec is played mostly top...

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

I'm looking forward to the next patch or two, I'm expecting to see more buffs that aren't directly focused on the jungle.

LeeSin "We noticed the Golden Child was having a little more trouble than usual with the tank invasion finally arriving to jungle. So we decided to give him a little nudge in the right direction."

Q1: Base damage reduced (slightly). Now deals % current health damage. Q2: %missing health damage increased.

E2: Now shreds %armor and %magic resist.

(Yes, I'm fear mongering again)

This forum hates Lee too much for him to ever be buffed.

The amount of collective shit that would be lost....

.... pales in comparison to the amount of collective shit that is lost when he gets nerfed.

Auz the Ripper2 votes

Eh, I'd say they'd be about equally large beyond reason. From what i can tell around half the players both absolutely love and hate him respectively

I reiterate that lane tanks were not even touched.

Righteous Glory.

TotalJerk1 votes

Happened around the same time as the new jungle everybody hated, way before 5.5. Also, That item is very inefficient for champions that don't use mana or don't need more than they have.

HeWolf1 votes

I mean that it gave +500HP before 5.5 but if I remember well it was changed to +650HP in 5.5.

Porcentually, it was a HUGE buff to that item. It doesn't necessarily affect every tank but it's obvious that it was a buff indeed (and a GREAT one) to everyone who can use it in their build.

Drukyul4 votes

Hec is OP because you can't rely on your idiot team to spend 250g to upgrade their fucking yellow trinket because they're all morons.

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

That... has nothing... to do with Hec. :/

There is this thing that happens called buffing a champion, both gotten significant buffs and the cinderhulk buffed them even further. Sejuani got her w buffed alot and now it scales off her health so she does a lot of damage late game while being very tanky, and Hecarim got buffs to his Q and W and what do you know, lane hecarim gotten stronger.

Its literally always done that, since her release in season 2.

Hecarim is "considered" OP (I don't think he is) because people are starting to realize how much burst he does when he is ahead.

But with Hecarim against a melee top laner he has many tools to get ahead. The mana buffs and sustain buffs gave him more lane presence, his e allows him to escape so he can run ignite which gives him even more kill pressure.

He can spam his q in lane allowing him to outrade many melees (not as bad as darius but still quite strong).

and on top of that he fits in with the tank meta and has a fantastic ulti.

AbodyHUN6662 votes

Also he can push the wave while zoning/poking the enemy at the same time.

Chespin20131 votes

has great splitpush potential aswell and great ganks with tps and almost no one can catch him unless u got slows or stuns or snares or anything locking him down

Jungle Lux God3 votes

Between now and a few months ago both of them got some pretty nice buffs.

Sejuani got some buffs that allowed her to compete in the jungle when tank junglers like her were not tuned to be able to compete. Then Cinderhulk came and made her the single best jungler in the game.

Hecarim also had gotten some buffs as well, and those made his laning a lot stronger. Therefore he started to see play in the top lane. Also noteworthy is that sometimes a pick gets used as a counterpick to some of the other really strong champions at the time. Hecarim is also an example of this, as if I'm not mistaken he is a pretty good counter to Lissandra, who was one of the best top laners when he started getting picked. Then players realized that he was less of a counterpick and more of a legitimately strong top laner, very much one of the best in the game.

killd0zer3 votes

Gee, I wonder how someone like Sejuani could see a raise in popularity?

She was buffed directly, had her competition nerfed, got a new jungle item, of which she has some of the greatest synergy, and the jungle damage was nerfed. Oh and she was well known for being decently strong post 4.21

Hahah hehe hah he so funneh how randumbly she got popular :^) who woulda gussed

Just imagine what it must be like for us Urgot players!

AbodyHUN6661 votes

Same thing, someone realises that he is really good versus assasins, tanks are there to peel for him, he gets really good. Picking to counter the meta is always a good strategy.

Risurin2 votes

Tank items and gromp buff is the reason Sejuani become top tier (+ obviously the buff she had received previous to those changes).

As for Hecarim, one of the main reason he has seen so much play top lane, is because he does decently well in most matchup, doesnt really need flash (and as opposed to what most people use, doesnt necessary need ghost). In a TP heavy meta for top lane, being able to run Teleport and Ignite is actually pretty good, you dont let go of TP for splitpush/ganks/etc, and you get a lot of kill pressure into your lane, which also help you snowball. He also doesnt do too badly early in laneswaps, since he can farm the jungle decently on his own. His Engage and kit-synergy with homeguard and TP is really good for teamfights. And of course the buffs he received were pretty good for him. Mean he can spam more abilities and with only triforce he can already deal good damage and can go tank for the rest.

Definitely not as high priority as Sejuani but still a good pick. Usually that's how champion rise up or fall off form popularity. Whenever the game see changes with a new patch, a lot of picks that were good, can suddenly not be as great and vice-versa depending on what has changed. Those changes doesn't necessary need to affect them directly too, sometimes it can be subtle how some meta shift influence picks (example, Vayne on the second half of S3, she became more popular because most of her counter got nerfs and became less popular. Corki and Lee Sin have become less popular recently despite any nerf (outside of corki mana cost on W), because the timing window of their power spike have been reduced significantly by the tank jungle meta that is happening right now.) Mind you, they all still good champions, and in fact i dont thing there is a bad champion. Its just that for certain circunstances and meta some are better then others.

please learn to follow patch notes. This explains sej.

Hec top has been popular since season 4 and was in pro play in CHINA

the thing happen with nidalee they buffs her vs mosters so she could jungle then they started nerfing her becuase she was good.

except the only thing g different was the nerfs affect her laning abiltis more than they affect her junlging abilties. so the pratty much gave midalee the ability to jungle then removed her ability to do her other THREE lanes. nidale could prevoiusly mid top and support. now she can only jungle and now she isnt even good at jungling...

Ariel the Cruel5 votes

I played Sej in Season 4, the biggest noticeable differences are:

  • Her clear time is far better
  • Her early game damage is better ( previously only her early game CC was good, the damage didn't really become a threat until late )
  • Her sustain in jungle is better

Sejuani always had the potential to be god tier because of her kit and the amount of CC it provided. I always told myself "wow, if this champ ever gets decent clear and higher damage early on, she's going to be insane". Looks like my prediction was spot-on.

junglerboy161 votes

It isn't funny if you read the patch notes, they each received buffs for several patches in a row, and then they both got blanket buffs. Hecarim got mana sustain and health sustain buffs, as well as buffing his passive (which is why TP homeguard Hecarim is a thing again). Sejuani got her kit rebalanced into a much stronger mid game kit with much better clear and burst.

kile1471 votes

They may literally be the least surprising part of the meta shift, they both received very obvious and publicized buffs

Oh no. It is strange how they got super buffed. WOW it is so crazy.

manbearswine1 votes

Well sejuani got buffed both by items and straight buffs,so that one is pretty obvious.

Hecarim I guess people didn't try top lane? I don't know much about that lane.
