League Has Turned Into A Positioning Simulator
Came back to the game a couple of months ago and it feels like the game has gotten even burstier than before I left and I thought it had gotten pretty bad back then. Even when you play a tank fights seem to be incredibly short. It's become much, much more about positioning/catching than actually being mechanically good with your champion and outplaying the enemy over a decent length teamfight. There's so much damage flying around from every champion in the game it doesn't allow for the luxury playing well over a period of time. I remember playing
back in the day, building offtank and really being able to wade into fights to lay down some sustained CC for my allies without just... melting. The nerfs to tank items somewhere in the patch 5.x cycle killed this off, but at least damage output was at a decent place relative to health pools. Fast forward to the rune system + champion over-buffs and here we are...
I see that Riot has said they are/were looking to bring damage down. This is very encouraging as a player who enjoys the actual combat rather than the ego boost of the kills. I worry Riot won't go far enough though as I know Pro play is more exciting to watch when burst is king. It could be nice to gauge player interest by having a game mode where everyone has way more health (could reduce the effectiveness of heals/shields/regen somewhat to keep certain champs from being OP) because currently the alternate game modes are even spammier/burstier than regular ranked matches.
I know it can be tough when segments of the playerbase want two very conflicting things. I don't want to rain on the parade of Zed/Kha'zix/etc. type players who love the adrenaline rush of going on a kill streak, but at the same time there are many of us who enjoy the longer more tactical fights and the current damage output of nearly every champion in the game is far to high to get anywhere close to that.
Just for example of the old days, check this old Karma Spotlight video. @2:20 the fight at top tower- that fight actually has some nuance to it rather than one of the players pressing 2 buttons and instantly deleting someone. Nowadays a 3v1 top fight like that would be a quick tower dive, kill, and tower taken.
