Riot, Can You Make Building Offtank More Viable?

I don't want to bore anyone with a wall of text, so I'll simply say I very much miss how in the earlier seasons of the game you could build defensive items on non-tank champions and actually feel a tangible increase in your survivability. Before Runes Reforged (and maybe even a little before that?) I routinely built Bard as an offtank. Certainly not a true frontline champion, but you could at least block skillshots for your ADC, position yourself for ideal Q stun angles, be at the best place to create a magical journey for your team's escape, etc. It was a LOT of fun and way, way more interesting than playing the much more "all-in" run of the mill hook champions.

Now it feels like you're 90% "locked in" to a play style at champion selection. The items, especially defensive items, don't have the kick they once did. To top it all off there aren't even any good runes choices for this playstyle either. Grasp is pretty bad for ranged. Aftershock is clearly made for melee, and Guardian encourages playing a super passive lane, not to mention feels pretty mediocre given it's long cooldown.

I don't have any well-thought-out suggestions to remedy this- though maybe adding 1-2 items with massive defensive stats that actively reduce your damage output (like a weaker but permanent version of Gargoyle Stoneplate?). Just wanted to lay out my $0.02 for whatever they're worth. Would appreciate any perspective, facts, etc. that I might be missing here. Thanks!

I feel the same with the changes on Aftershock.

I used to play Voli Offtank/Bruiser-Style in Jungle with: item 1401 item 3800 item 3053

But now it forces me to buy resi-items. I can understand that they don't want squishy champs pick Aftershock so they get resis for free but what is with actual Offtanks/Juggernauts (in Jungle)? Aren't we allowed to play items like item 3053 or item 3083 anymore??

Why don't they connect the Aftershock Resistance to bonus HP instead of Armor/MR? Sadly there is no other Tankrune I can pick in the Jungle.

Resolve definitely needs more rune choices because it's full of weird niche runes that are only viable for very specific champs/roles. As tanky jungler for example there is often only one rune in each row that is kinda viable. Actually no freedom of choice. More like hardcore cookie cutter.

As Jungler:

Grasp = Lane Rune Guardian = Support Rune Only choice: Aftershock

Shield Bash = Weird Niche Rune Demolish = More a Lane Rune (kinda viable but feels odd as Jungler) Only choice = Font of Life (which feels very odd as an all-in Juggernaut/Offtank because it's so "supportish" without a buff for yourself)

Bone Plating = Lane Rune Second Wind = Lane Rune/Weak af Only Choice = Conditioning (which feels also odd if you want to play Steraks etc. and not full resistance Rammus style)

Revitalize = Niche rune for Champs with self-heal/shield Unflinching = Viable Overgrowth = Viable

I have the feeling that no one at Riot plays Resolve in Jungle. Otherwise they would know.

Runes reforged was a bad idea when they announced it and has only made the game worse since.

Simple fix. Bring us back to the days where Iceborn Gauntlet had 30 AP attached to it. Give us items that gave mediocre damage and mediocre survivability, which made them good because you could now fill two roles.

I agree

Grasp is actually better on ranged champions than it is for melee. Even ranged champs lile Lissandra and Pyke use Aftershock better than most of the melees do. However, I agree that defensive scaling these days is awful, especially tank itemization.
