Ideas for improving the game

  1. Reduced champion damage output across the board, with especially reduced burst
  2. Assassin classes to be compensated for lost burst with new map control utility (backdoor/sabotage tools, vision tools, traps)
  3. Mages to be compensated for lost burst with new itemization options to specialize in DPS, DOT, or AOE coverage
  4. AP juggernauts and AP brawlers/divers to have their own unique specialized itemization equivalent to AD fighter itemization
  5. For marksmen as a class to have a greater variety of specialized strengths and playstyles via their kits (ie., Tristana Sivir Jinx could have their AOE all increased and their single-target DPS lowered to make them less homogeneous with other marksmen)
  6. For marksmen to be somewhat less DPS focused (and have their DPS more gated via ramp-up in some cases) than currently on average, and have more teamplay utility options available, like itemization to debuff enemy resistances and vision utility like Ashe's Hawkshot for example
  7. For bot lane meta to be varied, with something like 10-30% APCs Karthus Heimerdinger Cassiopeia and/or hybrid carries (10-30% marksmen split into Lucian Ezreal Corki Quinn mid/jungle Kindred Graves to maintain their total class pick rate is fair)
  8. Safe long-ranged champions Quinn Vayne to leave top lane (I don't want melees like Yasuo to go bot lane either so it isn't melee favoritism; many ranged vs melee lane matchups are very toxic, with the exception of assassin mid-laners when they are balanced around needing to roam)
  9. Supports to have more options to synergize with a greater variety of champion classes, equivalent to how item 3504 item 3109 item 3050 synergizes specifically with marksmen
  10. For supports to be encouraged to roam more during laning and support the whole team instead of 'belonging' to a specific laner
  11. Maybe for the duo lane to shift to mid in order to allow supports to more conveniently roam to both top or bot
  12. Reduced snowballing (snowballing shouldn't erase counterplay so sharply via unavoidable <2 second burst or lifesteal drain-tanking)

  1. You could do that I guess. But that would take away the point of many champions. Assassins are there to oneshot one or two champions in lategame, if those are not protected enough. But tbh there are many ways to protect yourself/your carry from assassins.

Such change just wouldnt be worth it. I can imagine many zed or idk shaco mains to quit League if such change comes to live.

  1. Considering 2) solitarily, makes it seem like a pretty nice idea. I like it.

3)Same with 3) as with 1) in my opinion. What would a Lux be if she isnt rewarded for hitting a Q? You wanna be able to oneshot people if you played well. Reducing the burst for more AOE or DOT would make it feel like playing against 5x Deaths Dance.

  1. That's a valid point. As far as I know they are updating the shop right now, so that might happen.

  2. is kind of true, but you cant just change a huge number of champions to make them more different. In the end everyone still plays in a different way. But Marksmen are the least varied class there is I guess.

  3. But that is what makes a marksman a marksman. A "Glass-Canon" shoots very fast and often and hurts. But is very easy to kill. So I would not reduce the dps. More utility and teamplay options are a good point tho.

  4. that was the case last year and some Mages can still be played there. A Cassio or a Ziggs could still carry botlane. But marksmen are very strong and hypercarrying a lot in the current meta, that's why it doesnt appear that often anymore.

  5. Sure it is cancerous to play against Teemo, Vayne, Viktor, Quinn on top. But these picks have their weaknesses too. You can see the winrates of those picks on that certain position and it's not that crazily high. So it is not overpowered... Although it can seem like it when you face it.

  6. I strongly support that one!

  7. it's just a matter of timing and the champions that are picked on each role. A bard can and should roam a lot. So a thresh or blitzcrank. But that depends on who is your marksman. You can easily leave an Ezreal to solo the lane for a moment. Also take in account who is mid? it's harder to gank a LeBlanc than a Orianna. But roaming is and should be encouraged.

  8. A midlaner is nearly always blessed with a very strong ultimate and can reach level 6 even earlier than any other lane, because minions arrive earlier on the lane than on top or mid. Also midlaners are oftenly very good roamers and can pull a roam off even better with high level, in contrast to support who doesnt need more that level 6 (metaphorically). Also bot lane is way longer than midlane and easier to gank. Imagine a mage soloing there and pushing. He would get punished so fast. Sure it would be great for the support to roam top. But with top oftenly having tanks played (especially in the upcoming meta), those two would possibly lack the damage to kill the enemy toplaner, contrary to that a midlaner provides very much damage to burst the toplaner.

  9. I get the point. And it is arguable. So far I guess rito tries to counter snowballing with help of the shutdown money. But I know what you mean and especially a fed olaf or vladimir (i.e. lifesteal-snowballers) are very frustrating to play against.

I hope you consider my responses. Those are not meant to attack you personally or anythings. I am just sharing my thoughts on your post. Happy Easter! (try to ignore possible mistakes. English is not my native language). [slayer-jinx-wink]

Thanks for the long post. I hope you had a good Easter/Passover too. = ) About mages needing burst to be rewarded, I think it's fine for specifically Burst Mages and AP Assassins to specialize in burst. I don't like when other mage classes feel too similarly burst-focused due to a lack of alternative item paths and the prevalence of flat magic penetration in almost all AP builds. I would like for champions like Velkoz Malzahar Viktor Karthus Anivia Cassiopeia Ziggs Vladimir Zyra , who are not considered part of the burst mage class, to have different items available to build that would emphasize different strengths. For example, Ziggs Anivia could build new items that specifically increase the size of their area of effect abilities, provide a ramping buff depending on how many enemy champions are hit within the last few seconds, or apply non-stacking damage over time effects that would also reward hitting a large number of targets to keep the DOT active. Velkoz could benefit from the non-stacking DOT effects too, which would reward his sniping/poking playstyle and he could also benefit from the ramp-up and AOE items to improve his ultimate and teamfighting abilities. Karthus Cassiopeia Malzahar could really benefit from ramping up DPS items to reward them for kiting and landing multiple abilities (or keeping Voidlings on a target), so they could use some sort of item that grants a ramping-up buff for hitting the same target repeatedly, allowing them to specialize into marksman levels of DPS to slay tanks/juggernauts.

But all of these strengths would need to come at a cost so that balance is maintained, so they would need to give up burst/flat-magic-pen when choosing these new items. For that reason, flat magic pen would need to become harder to add into a build. I'll come back to this.

Taking things to an extreme level of specialization, we could even get an item that actually directly reduces the owner's upfront burst by converting some of their instant damage into a larger amount of delayed DOT or stored 'damage charges'. We do currently have a few items that provide some variety, like item 3151, but we could do with a lot more. item 3027 and/or item 3907 might be a good fit to turn into a delayed/ramping DPS item. Some sort of 'Curse of Kumungu' plague artifact would make a good fit for a debuffing AP item that inflicts the enemies with disease, making them take increased magic damage from the owner and causing the enemy to have reduced AP/AD while receiving DOT. Some sort of 'Terra Breaker' infernal gauntlet item could grant increased AOE size, where AOE abilities cause fissures to tear open along the radius and deal a % of the spell damage. So if you wanted to be a specialized AOE mage, you'd likely want to get Terra Breaker and then apply Curse of Kumungu and Liandry with your larger AOE. You'd likely also want Rylai and possibly one of the reworked DPS items item 3907 item 3027.

By specializing like that, you should no longer have the AP or flat pen to burst down enemies, but you would likely perform better in teamfights and better against tanky enemies as a fair tradeoff, especially with a item 3135 if the enemies are stacking MR. To ensure that tradeoff actually exists, flat magic pen would need to become harder to justify in a mage build. I think that item 3020 should be changed to grant some mana and +5 MS per 100 AP (max +20). Lethality should then become a neutral/hybrid stat that works with both physical and magic damage and a new pair of 'Bilgewater Boots' could be added with a relatively weaker amount of lethality (maybe +9 or so) as an option for either AP assassins or AD assassins and certain burst mages. item 3814 could become an AD/AP neutral lethality item, with higher lethality and no AD. item 3165 could lose its magic pen in exchange for more AP and/or a lower cost so that it is clearly a counter-sustain item and not a burst item. Some new AP lethality items could be added, possibly building out of item 3916 which could become the AP equivalent of item 3134. For example, item 3100 could gain lethality as a stat and have its build changed to item 3057 + item 3916. Certain AP champions, like Fizz Akali Evelynn TwistedFate Leblanc could be granted compensatory lethality ratios like Pyke has to help them adjust to their new builds and to also create a new balance lever to prevent tank Fizz Akali from resurfacing in the future.

It would be possible to go for an AOE burst build too with Terra Breaker, item 3285, and lethality items. That would be an attractive option for Brand Annie Lux. The main point of the changes would be to increase playstyle variety by creating new options so that burst and flat pen aren't nearly universal for all types of AP champions.
