What's stopping you from playing a greater variety of champions? Part 1

I want to crowd source a bunch of poll options on why you do or don't play a wider variety of champions; here are some I've come up with:

  • Not enough IP for champs
  • Bought runes over champs
  • Only pick meta champs
  • I'm a one trick

Edit (additions):

  • Not enough time to learn
  • Prefer specific playstyles
  • Harassed for learning
  • Harassed for non-meta picks

  1. Because I'm sick of people bitching at me when I'm trying to learn a new champion/matchup/lane/etc.

I improve faster if i play a small amount of champs

You can make a poll. Or if you want people to be able to select multiple options, try the free version of surveymonky.

Personally I play a smaller variety of champions for two main reasons:

  1. I know these ones best and know I will perform better when using them
  2. I have to pick characters I'm good with, or pick overly strong characters. I have to do so in order to be able to keep up with the Flavor of the Month OP bullcrap that meta sheep swear by.

I think they want to make a poll with more options, and are asking for ideas.

Yeah this ^

Ah ok.

  • Can't go out of meta without getting an earful of bitching from teammates
  • I would expand the "one trick" to encompass smaller champion pools as well, like my #1 in my first comment.
  • Frequency of play can affect it as well, if somebody doesn't play often then they don't have time to master a larger champion pool.

EDIT:

  • Also playstyle. Example: some people only like artillery mages. So their champion pool might consist of Xerath, Ziggs, Lux, Kog Maw...

"I'm a one trick" is the one and only viable answer and is always the truth. You can't even compare it with 42, because one tricking a champion is even more true.

*Edit The answer to life is one tricking a champion.

What if the ultimate question was "At what mastery level should I stop playing Taliyah?"

The mastery level to stop playing Taliyah would be 5000000000000000

IP is the biggest gate for me, but I also only play champions that fit my playstyle (utility/CC heavy champions).

I don't have the time to learn more than 3-4 champions. I can get higher ranked by playing 3-4 meta champions than trying to learn more for counterpicks.

The problem with playing and learning meta champions is that you will most likely fall down fast after they get nerfed and either have a hard time afterwards or have to learn the new meta champions. It's safer to pick a handful of champion you like the design and/or the skills of and learn to play them. Even if they're not meta, they can still become meta in the future or they're strong on their own already, just not defined in the current meta.

I find that I can avoid that by just playing them in flex/norms for a couple days until I get a good handleon them. (I'm also an adc main that knows Caitlyn so I'm pretty set. She'll never be bad)

1 trick, the more you play the champ the more comfortable you get in bad match ups, the more creative you get with how to use your abilities, and always knowing how much dmg you do helps decide whether or not you can win the trade my 2 cents, i have almost 500 games on lux this season and over 300k champion points now, using lux i was able to climb from b4 to gold 5 right and and sitting s5 in flex 1 trick is how you climb IMO

Not one trick, generally like more interesting champions that are fun to play , which involves a cool design, and not one dimensional kits, that leaves me bored after 1/2 games. That being said yasuo, draven, sion, gangplank braum , illaoi (gotta admit she is pretty unique) are some of my favourite champions.

For me its because I'm not good with a wide variety of champs. I mainly play Jinx, Thresh, Yorick and Camille, but try new champs all the time... and I usually suck with them. It's not that I don't like the other champs I've tried, but rather most of them just don't come naturally to me.

Supports to get Maokia 4800 Orianna 4800 Malzahar 4800 Brand 6300 Vel'koz 6300 Xerath 6300

This is from a sticky on my dash. Notice how none of them are actual supports? That's because I have them all. Next is actually Ivern so I have a jungle alternative. So nothing is preventing me right now(except the fact that I don't have good enough internet to play league).

I know what kind of champions I like and I don't care for anybody else

if you win the match they ignore you if you lose the match they will flame and blame you for everything, you can be 999-0-999 and they would still blame you for everything because non-meta pick

Depends what mood I'm in/why i'm playing. Typically I'll pick:

  1. A champ that looks fun/enjoyed previously if I'm with friends and/or bored of my typical picks.
  2. A champ I like that is Lv5/6 and want to get to Lv 6/7
  3. A champ that a good all-rounder when in ranked (or in practising for ranked).

However, when I pick a champion to play, while being fun is important, I would admit that I find the current power level of that champion to be quite important. However, I prefer to shy away from whatever champions I see lots of in my current games, I've never played Yasuo, Lee Sin or Zed in normals, while I could see myself learning their mechanics ok, they all revolve around deleting someone in seconds, and combined with their notorious reputations, it puts me off (as a mid lane mage main, I prefer working up to the deleting stage in the later game, as I've always hated being destroyed in the early game, this probably influenced my dislike of these champs who typically end up being meta).

However, I do enjoy picking champs that are strong but aren't played much of my games. When Orianna's dark star skin released, I was frantic to try it out, so I thought I would see more competition for mid lane in Blinds, some Orianna instalockers taking her support maybe. Nope. And I only ever played against 1 other Dark Star Orianna since. So even though she's meta and common in LCS, she's definitely more uncommon than seeing Ahri, Lux or Veigar, which I like when it comes to playing Orianna.

A more extreme case than this was when I looked into playing Taliyah. I've already got Aurelion Sol to Lv5 (I would like to play him a bit more too considering i'm getting less assassin match ups), and Taliyah was the "other" new mid laner on the block that people don't play. It was just so refreshing to win games using a champion I hadn't really seen much of before, but can still be so damn powerful. I didn't expect what Taliyah could do, and I'm guessing my teammates and opponents didn't either, which only made things more fun. I would definitely say if Taliyah was stupidly common, I wouldn't enjoy playing her so much, when you bring an uncommon champion like Taliyah or Aurelion into a game, you're changing up the flow of things, you're making your team and your opponents think, you're making the game different to all those repeated Yasuo matchups. This is a big part of why I pick what I do when in that champ select.
