Why is individual ranking based on team performance?

The whole concept of the ranked system is so that players can play with people of a similar skill level who will actually try to work together to win, unfortunately there still are trolls and rangers because that just some peoples personality. However when you as an individual lose ranked games die to these individuals or just a teammate who had really bad luck I fail to see why your rank goes down because of someone else' performance. Your rank should be bases on your individual performance as a player. For example if your team got stomped overall like 30-10 but you went 7-5 I fail to see how this shows that you aren't ready to play with people of higher rank. In fact this should BE the evidence to show you are ready, because you're able to maintain a positive KD ratio despite your team losing ! To prevent this system screwing the lower kill earning positions like tank or support just add their kill participation or assists.

Riot please make the individual rank based on the individual, not the team.

And how do you intend to do that and make it fair for every role?

An super-incredible Support player with 4 terrible teammates might still end up 0/12/2, just because his team is that bad. What if the support is playing at a Diamond 2 level though, and just can't carry hard enough?

What if you actually lose the game for your team by stealing all the kills with a powerful early-game champion, try to get MORE kills, and end up losing the game by not actually managing to take any objectives or leaving any kills for the late-game characters on your team? You might end 18/2/3, but you might have actually contributed to your team's loss.

In short, League is a team game. There is also no way to fairly figure out a single individuals contribution to the game. A Singed who sits top, pushes constantly, and dies a lot can be useless...or, if the remaining 4 teammates can easily fight the remaining 4 teammates of the enemy team, he could be the important cornerstone that threatens towers well enough that they have to pull off their fed top-laner to kill him, allowing you to stomp the remainder of the team. Even if that Singed ends 0/11/3 with one tower pushed, he's still a really crucial part of the team strategy.

This idea has been brought up a lot...and, until you can find a way to represent skilled play or useful play that extends into meta-level strategic play rather than simply K/D/A, farm, towers, and damage, the system will be easily to game and not actually representative of an individual's ability to play the game.

Bacause ranking players based on individual performance causes players to play for stats rather than wins.

Or perhaps you got a few early kills and then jungled for the rest of the game, leaving your team to feed 4v5 so you get a higher rating at their expense.

  1. How do you get assists if your team sucks (the premise of your suggestion) and isn't getting any kills.

  2. http://loldb.gameguyz.com/statistics/kda

Janna: average KDA 5.02 Yi: average KDA 2.57

So you're saying a Janna player should gain twice as much LP as a Yi player?

Facepalm.
