Lets Talk About Morelonomicon

So Morelo is overly slot efficient and is the only good starting mana item for 80% of mages. I wanted to discuss what could be done to bring some choice and variety to the early game mage build.

In the past Morello and Athene's would fight each other for being the 20% cdr mana item. Their AP and mr fluctuated, attempting to be for different types of mages but really just creating an arms races between to two items. The intent was right though: Different mana items to serve different champions. So here's my question:

#What are the different types of mages, and what stats would best serve them?#

These are the types of mages, based on how I view champions.

There are ranged burst mages who deals rotations of damage, often in an aoe. They like high AP and mana, but benefit from a bit of cdr.

There are assassins who get close, pop a rotation, and back off. Anything that increases their burst combo such as AP, mpen, or extra AP ratios from items are greatly useful.

Utility mages have both decent damage and support effects that they use to duel enemies and support allies. They like ap but rely more on cdr and mana regen than other mages.

There are tanky ap champions who need hp and resistances to take hits from multiple champions, though they are all ready well served by rod of ages.

Lastly there are the few ap dps champions like Azir and Cassiopeia that deal consistent damage over time. This one is harder, but there are three things all dps champions like: damage, movement speed, and life steal.

You know why Morello is built on every mana mage? because it's the only fucking decent item that has a good build path

If you want a void staff, you have to buy 850/435 then sit until 1.3k gold. If you want a ludens, you have to buy 1250/850 then sit until 1.1k gold. If you want a roa, you have to buy shitty mana crystals and ruby crystals/850g blasting wand. Then sit on ~1k i believe.

But if you want to buy AD items? item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 item 1036 to your heart's content. Then spend like 600 to combine everything to a final item

Solution : Add more amplifying tomes to items. There is no reason AP champs have to sit on much more gold to combine/buy components compared to AD champs.

Make a item 1052 item 1052 -> AP/magic pen item (this might be broken tho) Or make item 3113 more expensive and more ap but build out of two amplifying tomes Or item 3108 build out of two amp tomes with more AP

RoA is actually really cheap with a solid build path, sure the Catalyst ain't great but if you're building RoA you are sacrificing early power. The combined cost is only 850 as well. The whole thing is as expensive as a Spirit Visage.

AP DPS champions love CDR, there's a big difference between a 20% CDR Karthus Cassiopeia and a 0% CDR Karthus Cassiopeia (At least I notice it a lot when I play them.) They also benefit from tankiness, as their core items are item 3027 item 3116 (at least in cass's case they used to be, since she spends so much time getting down her damage she needs to survive.) rather than lifesteal/spellvamp.

Buff the other AP items. item 3165 is pretty much the only good item to rush, everything else just brings raw AP and you'll be incredibly weak if you rush something else except in cases where your champion builds things out of catalyst since your sustain is really bad and you won't have any CDR. CDR = damage. I'm thinking item 3285 needs buffs and there should be more items to increase the amount of magic penetration, or at least % magic pen, an AP champion can get.

But... wouldn't CDR on Karthus only affect his ult and W?

It increases his DPS on his Q and Cass's E, if you play CDR Karthus/Cass and you go to 0% CDR you notice a huge difference in your dmg.

I forgot about cdr on dps mages. Its basically the ap version of attack speed. A dps mage mana item would likely build out of tear and give at least 10% cdr, maybe 20%. I could see utility mages and dps mages using the same mana item.

Dps mages do need some tailor made damage items. For example, an item with maybe 60 or 70 ap, but a passive where spending mana causes you to gain stacks of 4 ap, up to 5 stacks that last for 7 seconds.
