Or maybe they just had relatively low elo cause they were a group of friends who didn't play much until well after the new season started.

I have never gotten that poorly matches, but now at Bronze 2 I am seeing only Silver Opponents (my team is usually bronze). Recently vs'd two Gold, but we had a plat jungler at least but he couldn't carry vs consistently better lanes.

GankedByWindows1 votesIt was a flex game. Flex MMR is completely seperate from solo MMR. Challenger solo players still start around silver in flex due to that.
