"*Ancient Coin’s existing passive - being near a minion when it dies - is pretty boring and offers nothing to build a quest around. So, we’re redesigning it. Nearby enemy minions occasionally drop coins when killed by anyone other than you, either restoring mana or granting gold on pick-up. (After one coin type has spawned, the next is guaranteed to be the other type.) Collect these coins to complete your quest."

the only champions who buy the coin are ones that need to stay back and be safe or tank supports looking to be safe because theyre against a mage and its too dangerous to cs

i guess its just going to be balanced around thresh only buying it in maybe 25% of his games i guess because its basically his passive

not only this but the enemy team can just actively deny you gold because it leaves a coin that you need to collect

I agree, not to mention that the "bonus" it gives is just a rushed ability point.

Why would anyone want that if you can get a permanent shield or a burst if speed when you poke? The power of supports is in their utility, an extra ability point at midgame isn't going to change much, but surviving extra poke or being safe when poking is much more valuable.

And now people can even deny the Gold and Exp bonus. This item is dead.

  1. Let's be fair. It was always strange that item 3301 was passively generating gold without any requirements at all while item 3302 item 3303 actually need you to do something to get the gold.

  2. Maybe they made the coin passive exactly because of these supports. Think about it. Why, for example, do many siege mages, which are known for their huge range, have something in their kit that encourages auto attacking? Lux Xerath Ziggs The answer is that Riot wants to make you leave the safe range of your skills, so the enemy is actually able to interact with you. Same could apply here, supports like Soraka Janna are able to stay back while supporting their carry. With coin no longer being in its current state, they have to leave the safe zone behind their carry and actually do something to get the gold.

Depending on how big the quests are, I could see coin maybe becoming the default buy for many supports to get the elixir relatively early on, then sell the coin and swap to spelltheif/relic lines which might be easier to stack later in the game, allowing some supports to sorta double dip in the bonuses.

If they want it to be viable then the coins should be spat out ~350 units in your direction, slightly less if you're closer to the creep and slightly more if you're further away. That way they'd land in a spot where it's actually feasible to contest them.

EclipseTim4/14/2017, 8:20:24 PM6 votes

That is going to seriously suck

Not sure why they need to make this change, especially with how Supports need a safe option to lane with. I always go item 3301 if my ADC is inexperienced or if the lane matchup is harsh because it's a safe option that will help me hold off until mid-game. Now it's mostly useless for squishy Supports AND for tanky Supports. Thresh could probably use it, but why take it over Targons which is an item that offers much more gold and survivability if used correctly.

Making certain enchanter's playstyle more interactive than "stay back and be safe" is a good thing.

I like the ability point idea, seems neat, not particularly worth while, but neat all the same.

But yeah, I hope they don't get rid of the passive gold and health gains, it sounds like they will though. Sucks.

seems like it was made for thresh, and to force blitz not to just camp a bush

SinofAtlas4/14/2017, 11:25:02 PM2 votes

Well this sucks. I main Singed, and my starting items are Ancient Coin and Refillable Pot. I use it instead of actual laning items because singed isn't the best person to farm with until later in the game. I'm also that person who thinks proxy farming early is too risky. Granted I'm a tank, but do I really want to go into the line of fire just so I can get some gold or mana?

Would be nice if this http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Globe_of_Trust made a comeback right about now.

well. Ancient coin was always an item that i didn't like getting. not that it will have a boring chore-quality mini-game on it?

Coin is for non-offensive caster Supports

Totally agreed because I play Leona as my support. So i'm basically I'm screw because i can't passively gain money, HP, and mana , but it even is much worst now that I can ether get mana or money on drops wow. I can't grab spell thief because of no range.

Arsenic Sulfur4/15/2017, 3:58:38 PM1 votes

Riot doesn't want those hyper-uninteractive playstyles, at least not on an item. Ancient Coin rewarded you for not interacting and simply staying in EXP range. Doesn't help that its upgraded version is an unconditional movespeed boost so you could just run like a little bitch with your ADC.
