Aatrox Analysis, the power of CC
Poppy is a classified as a tank:
At the highest levels her damage is this:
140 +80% of bonus AD plus 6% of targets max health 230 Magic Damage plus 70% AP 150 plus 50% bonus AD 400 plus 90% bonus AD
So total that is 920 damage, 70% bonus AP and 220% bonus AD.
Her CC is
40% Slow A knockdown 2 second stun A knockback
She also gets 12-24 percent increases on resistances and a shield that scales off of her max health
Aatrox who is classified as fighter gets
250 plus 60% bonus AD 200 plus 100% Bonus AD 215 plus 60% AP 400 Plus 100% AP
Total is 1065, 160% AP, 160% Bonus AD
His CC is 1 second stun 2.75 second 40% slow
So poppy, a tank, enjoys much better AD scaling than Aatrox, who does't even get to scale AD with his ult, while having half of the CC, and also not having nearly as much tankiness.
Here is the problem: Poppy's, or anyones CC shut down Aatrox's auto attacks. But his strengths with are attack speed in his passive and attack speed in his ult, don't shut down a champion that rely on abilities to do damage and CC.
Again, Poppy can CC AND do damage, AND at the same time making Aatrox NOT do damage. The reverse is not true. Aatrox's main strengths can't shut down her main strength.
This is why Aatrox is in a bad state. Everything he is is based on Auto attacks, which is easily shut down. By CC and items. And to make it worse, you have champions that literally get more of everything except his passive Which is awful because when you revive you have no bonus attack speed. Poppy gets more CC has more abilities that scale of AD, has more resistances and can use tankier items very well.
You can run this comparison against other champs or with other champs not including Aatrox.
The point is the same. CC is a better thing to have than other abilities. It lets the user do damage while stopping damage from coming in. The more you have of it, the more useful you are in more situations. Even if the opponent potentially can do more damage with abilities and auto attacks, it won't matter. Her damage, like any other tank with lots of CC, is not so far removed from other champions that its insignificant. She does plenty of damage.
Sure, in a vaccum, Aatrox can do well, if every enemy has blown their CC or he is 1v1ing someone who just used one of their CC abilities--but taken as a whole, he fails because of how easy it is for nearly any champion to shut him down.
And before you reply, save your time and don't comment on my builds I use for Aatrox. On my other account I have tried all the combo's for him that there are. I rush a frozen mallet nearly every game and climbed to Gold playing only Aatrox---win rate and everything doesn't change. Numbers are funny like that.
Some of you guys don't understand how to think about things: For every situation that a BOTRK or hydra would have been better, there is a situation where mallet is better---less expensive, better for locking down multiple champions, setting up good ganks for the jungler, surviving burst damage and being able to fight on and heal.
It a perfectly fine item to rush, and a lot of fun---like when Garen tries to dash away and you just beat him down as he slowly tries to get away. One reason Garen is so easy to beat is because he doesn't have a way to shut down auto attacks, except with items that slow it, which he will not have before you have killed him in lane a couple times and started to snowball.
into their build if the need arises to 1v1 you past 2 items
is 6700g for 79 AD and 104% AS with 2 large sources of on hit damage. Against the average tank Bork is the same as 180-60 AD based on their current HP, and Rageblade boosts all your magic damage significantly so they can't just stack armor against you. Round that off with
and you'll actually be unduelable
will smash through you like nothing, likely killing you the moment you hit 5 stacks even with all your attack speed. The only way that build works is if you get to 1v1 a low damage tank, something Darius already excels at.
