Baron does more damage when you're behind it because that is the safest spot to defend Baron from contest. So it's a deterrent to be in the safest spot...Also it points out the strength of red side vs blue side. If the whole team is behind Baron, how can the other side of the map contest as easily Vs the other side of the map where Dragon is.
Because poor Baron Nashor has really bad gas and he's really self conscious of it.

Also note that the champion who was damaged last by the baron deals 50% less damages to the baron.
Its to prevent stuff like Shaco from standing behind Baron for 4 seconds while invisible.
He should do it everywhere. And have more armor. 20 minute Baron should be a super risk play.
Because he's an old puppy and feels scared when people creep around outside his field of vision.
