Why Zed FEELS Unfair (Even if He Really Isn't)

I've seen that Zed is a massive debate amongst the boards and possibly the League community in general. And to be honest, I think I might know why. First and foremost, I want to say that I love playing Zed. He's one of my four MR5 champs and I own both Shockblade and PROJECT skins. He's a fun champion that can make plays and be relatively consistent without being abusive or binary- a rarity among League's assassin class. But that's not to say he's above accusations of abuse.

Back in Patch 5.17 Riot made a change to Zed that meant he could no longer get a mimicked shuriken if he used his W fast enough after activating his Q. While Riot fixed this, what they haven't changed is something that lets him pull off the very same combination of E into W to get the mimicked Shadow Slash the instant the shadow appears.

Shadow Slash's mimicked version has a 20-40% slow attached to it, and landing that spell makes it much easier for Zed to follow-up with his Shadow Shuriken, possibly landing both of them and getting not only that huge chunk of damage, but adding onto it with the most common keystone taken by Zeds; Thunderlord's Decree. I think this combination right here is why Zed feels so infuriating to some people, even when the statistics might say he's in a good spot performance-wise. And I think changing this might be what helps mend the divide.

Riot has made it clear (especially with the recent Nidalee changes on PBE) that they prefer removing invisible power over giving opportunities to display mechanical mastery. Perhaps by reducing the reliability with which Zed can land that deceptively long-ranged slow and redistributing that power to a more visceral aspect of his kit, Zed can be made to feel more fair and less oppressive to his enemies while still maintaining relative gameplay and performance balance.

Something like this would reduce Zed's flashy highly-technical playmaking (I've seen the duel of Zeds video a few times myself, I know this little technique has been around for quite a while), but to be perfectly honest I don't think Zed needs something like this. He's got a solid theme, a solid kit, and all-around solid ratios. Removing the ability to near-instantly place the copy-E wherever one wants to without tipping off the enemy would mean that the things that already make Zed fun and great could be further improved upon, and perhaps people playing against Zed wouldn't feel so shitty about it. I mean I'll admit, the only reason this came to mind as a reasonable course of action was because I thought Riot had said they removed his ability to do this, and I was quite annoyed to see that people were still "abusing this bug". The egg on my face when I realized my mistake; thank Bard/Aurelion Sol/Nagakeboros/Kindred/etc for actually checking your references.

TL;DR: I think removing Zed's ability to place Living Shadow while it's performing Shadow Slash and putting that power elsewhere in his kit would make Zed feel less oppressive to play against without actually sacrificing his viability and performance. Win-win, right?

He feels unfair because he is, except for few counter like Chogath most midlaners have no hope fighting him in any way unless he is complete potato.

His winrate doesn't reflect that because by lategame everyone will get Zhonya's, QSS or Steraks, and he can't deal with that. Giving so much power to a champion because he is so unreliable lategame is just horrible champion design.

Overresponsive abilities are just part of a problem.

That must be why I can beat him with Katarina and Xerath, two squishy AP based champions, one who relies on skill shots

And I can beat him with Teemo, how does it mean anything? Solo queue is solo queue, sometimes you just win.

You say they have no hope at fighting him. You yourself just provided an example where you do.

He does not have too much power -- he has a perfectly fine level of power early game for having a pretty weak late game. Zed only becomes a problem if he gets fed, and at that point, there is no balancing to be noted anywhere, as any champion seems OP when fed.

He doesn't fall even close to 50% winrate even after 40 minutes. His weak lategame is a myth. It's just unreliable.

No, I don't. Statistically he has absurd winrate against both Kat and Xer, and Teemo is one of those odd counters I talked about. Your lucky draw shows nothing.

absolutely incredible

you write in a format and cadence so similar to rioter red posts that it's uncanny.

anecdote? check buzzword abuse? check sweeping generalisation with the pretense of smarter-than-thou? check brilliant aha! moment? check proposing a vastly irrelevant solution and trying to talk it into relevance? check more buzzword abuse? check more sweeping generalisations that betray a misunderstanding of game design as a whole? check

you even have the quirky rioter quasi-humour down. this post is truly amazing.

banter aside, this really is irrelevant to where zed stands. he is a binary champion: either he can kill people, or he can't. he literally provides nothing for his team besides a kill threat. zed feels shitty to play against because he has an oppressive laning poke combo that's completely ungated by mana. he feels like shit to play against because, if even or ahead, he can nearly insta-kill you from 1325 range (nid spear is 1500 range for reference) unless you have QSS or zhonyas. after he kills you, he has almost absolute safety by hopping back to his R shadow. yeah, there's counterplay, but a large portion of it requires the zed to fuck up.

literally nobody ever has complained about zed's shadow slow. it's pretty weak unless he overlaps himself with the shadow (even weaker in League of Swifties), and he's not a champion that sticks to you and DPS's you to death. he either insta-kills you, or he doesn't.

edited addendum: zed isn't unfair to play against, nor is he currently broken. he just feels like shit to play against when he's ahead. he also feels like utter shit to play as or with when he's behind. guess what that makes him? a binary champ.

Zed's way too good. He's not "highly-technical", he's just flashy, which is why he's never going to get any nerfs or counter play. He's an AD caster, which is a problem in and of itself, AND an energy champion, which is another, completely different problem. He can place shadows that double all of his abilities and let him dash to them at any time, which cannot be attacked or interacted with in any way by enemy champions. His ult has a built-in panic button that allows him to just instantly teleport away if he makes a mistake casting it or needs to escape a tower dive, and makes him untargetable (which, yet again, is another problem with the game), making him extremely difficult to deal with once he gets into a teamfight. In order to make him less oppressive to play against, he needs a rework in several areas, though the most important one is his ult.

Riot just really needs to deal with energy regeneration during combat, ad casters being way too good at pushing structures, and untargetable being an outdated mechanic that has no place in the game now. All of that would make him much more reasonable to deal with, and bring him back down to a balanced level. It would also balance out the other energy-based champions and AD casters, as well as champions like Fizz or Master Yi who can just ignore any spell or ability that was sent after them with the press of a button.

He's not unfair and his mediocre winrate supports this.
