The need for Sightstone should be called into question.
IMO, Sightstone has outlived its usefulness. Trinkets do the warding job better (able to recharge in the field), SS offers extremely bad slot efficiency for stats, and it tends to be more useful to junglers than to supports. Supports only get it nowadays out of obligation instead of choice, which I feel is bad for the role.
Who here thinks the game could benefit from having Sightstone removed from the game? If anything, this could make trinket choice more dynamic, in that it forces more consideration and cooperation from the entire team. "Who gets the GST? Who gets the Sweeper?" This would be much better than simply forcing a SS onto a Support and having everyone else take a Sweeper.
Also, it'd make Lee Sin, Elise, and other junglers a bit more tame knowing they have to rely on either trinket wards or buying green wards the old fashioned way. I can't tell you how much it feels like a Lee Sin with SS is fighting dirty.
Besides, I can think of a lot more uses for that 800 gold and extra slot than a warding item. Having a Banshee or Randuin in that slot would be much more helpful.
